ARTIST OF THE DAY
Travis Cottrell

Travis Cottrell grew up in Boone, NC with a very American life. He played sports, hung out with friends, learned the guitar and dreamt of becoming a NASCAR driver. But as a teenager, God put His calling on Travis' life. Since graduating from Belmont University in Nashville, Travis has been serving God as a worship leader.

As a professional musician, Travis Cottrell has written and performed with Max Lucado, Amy Grant, Cindy Morgan and many other amazing artists. He has written and arranged choral projects and even performed at Carnegie Hall and Abbey Road!

For the last fourteen years Travis has served as worship leader at Beth Moore’s Living Proof Live conferences. He and his team have been grateful to minister with Beth Moore in all 50 states and in several other countries as well.

In addition to his writing, arranging, leading and singing, Travis has managed to carve out time to record several solo projects, including Found, Ring the Bells and the Dove award-winning Jesus Saves Live. He released his first book, Surprised By Worship: Discovering the Presence of God Where You Least Expect It (Zondervan) in the fall of 2010.

Personal: Travis serves as Worship Pastor at Englewood Baptist Church in Jackson, TN. He and his wife, Angela, have been married for 18 years, and have 3 children – Jack, 14, Lily Kate, 11, and Levi, 8, and 1 dog – Flash, 9.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Downhere

Downhere is actually from up there - Canada. Jason and Marc - co-lead singers of Downhere - met in college and have been laughing, writing and playing music together for over a decade. It's that friendship and sense of calling that keeps Downhere plugging away, even though the past decade has been anything but kind to the recording industry.

The band has been nominated for dozens of Dove Awards, Juno Awards, Covenant Awards and more.

"We live in an age when the most basic assumptions of orthodox Christianity are being challenged. As a younger band we wrote a lot of songs aimed at pointing out problems and tearing down things that we believed were wrong. But now, at this stage in life, we’re much more interested in going back to the beginning, and using our gifts to reaffirm and shore up the foundations of the faith. We want to be a part of building up the church and preserving the culture."

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Jadon Lavik

Jadon was born in Redmond, Washington, where he was raised in a Christian home with his parents and two siblings. Although he had some experience with music early in life playing violin and guitar, he was most energized about sports and desired to pursue a baseball career. But after an internship at Saddleback church in Southern California, the calling on his life became glaringly obvious.

Jadon Lavik is a worship leader, a songwriter, a husband and father - he's like you and me, a hundred different things. Just like in life, when writing and recording you hope to find the perfect balance of old and new.

Jadon Lavik's seminary background gives him a true concern with using Biblical theology in his worship songs. It is sometimes easier for a songwriter to go with what feels good. Spiritual candy. But Jadon deals with the depths of God's word in his writings.

Now married with two kids, Jadon ministers in the local church and tours the country playing music whenever he can. He also has three Christmas records - which makes him even cooler in my eyes!

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Go Fish

Go Fish is three guys bringing fun accapella fueled music to families and young children! Everything they do is geared towards introducing kids to Jesus through music, dance, visuals and fun.

Kickin’ It Old School is the latest installment of the biblical foundation for kids and families that Go Fish has been building since their 2003 children’s music debut, Splash. Leaving behind a career in Christian pop, the trio turned their attention to making music exclusively for kids.

Recently Go Fish has also put their vocal spin on classic hymns, like Before the Throne of God Above. In Kickin' it Old School, Go Fish has recorded hymns and classic praise songs to introduce children to the worship music of their parents and grandparents, but in a style that is relevant today.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Christ for the Nations

Christ for the Nations is so much more than just worship music. Christ For The Nations is an international, interdenominational organization which exists to train and equip men and women with the Word of God in the power of the Holy Spirit and with a lifestyle of worship, to reach the nations with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Worship Leaders Nicole C. Mullen, Kari Jobe, Russ Taff, Tommy Walker, Kevin Jonas and many more have been both trained and equipped to spread the heart of worship around the world through Christ for the Nations. Christ For The Nations Institute (CFNI) started out with a group in 1972 called the "Luminaires" and quickly broke into multiple focussed groups of ministry. Every year, since 1974, Christ For The Nations has been producing live album recordings that are created out of the students, staff, and alumni's hearts. Some of the music that has come out of Christ For The Nations include songs "As The Deer Panteth For The Water" by Marty Nystrom, and "When I Think About The Lord" by James Huey.

Providing resources for the completion of church buildings, caring for orphans, supporting the nation of Israel, humanitarian relief efforts, establishing and strengthening international Bible schools and the distribution of Christian literature. On top of that multi-layered ministry is the CFNMusic label, producing modern worship music and training worship leaders to carry the cause of Christ around the world.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
The Katinas

The Katinas have accomplished something unheard of in today's fast paced, they have had a 21-year success filled career with the same original line-up! Of course it helps that the five Samoan guys that comprise The Katinas are all brothers. With 17 children between the five growing families, the guys still have a passion and love for music that is showcased in their 10th English language album: Collage.

Music is important, but with a growing family, the guys have found incredible joy by partnering with mission organizations around the world - including Samaritan's Purse, Greg Laurie’s Harvest Crusades, Compassion International and World Vision. Plus the band is performing on their very own Katinas & Kuzins Cruise next year. Their family is so big, that I bet it might be hard to find tickets available...

Fun Fact: The guys in The Katinas are just 5 out of 12 kids in the family!

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Kerrie Roberts

Kerrie Roberts is a big voice in a little package. Growing up singing in church, she'd often have to stand on a crate so that people sitting further back than the front row could see where this powerful voice was coming from! Kerrie's dad was a pastor and her mom the choir director for their church. Being front and center in church was bred into her from birth!

Kerrie began writing her first songs in high school, performing one during her own graduation. When the time came for college, Kerrie chose to get her degree in Studio Music and Jazz Vocal Performance at the University of Miami.

“Little kids have dreams. For me, it was ‘I’m going to be a singer.’ And I never grew out of it.”

Kerrie recently co-wrote a song featured in previews of ABC's Once Upon A Time.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Peter Furler

Peter Furler is the quintessential drummer. He taps on EVERYTHING! The beat is always present. It's that driving rhythm that fuels all of his musical passion. Awarded multiple Grammy nominations and Dove awards, Furler has even been named the industry’s songwriter of the year. Originally from Australia, Peter has made America his home away from home for decades now.

Furler is one of very few artists who have collectively performed to over 15,000 Muslims in Morocco, for the Pope during World Youth Day, at The Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame, at a 9/11 service for U.S. military leaders at the Pentagon, at a New Age festival on the shores of Galilee in Israel, or rocked the punters at an outback pub in Aussie.

For Furler, the music has always been about making a difference, leaving the listener encouraged and uplifted. In 2009, fans saw the end of his long tenure as the lead singer of Newsboys, the band he founded in Mooloolaba, Queensland, Australia in the 1980s. Now he's creating art that is more personal - in fact, on his website you can even check out some of his paintings! Drummer, musician, songwriter and painter ... sheesh!

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Sara Groves

Link

This former teacher, who lives in Minnesota with her husband and their three kids probably wouldn't strike you as a famous songwriter if you caught her in the grocery store or out at the park playing - but she's already a legend in Nashvillian circles.

When it comes to songwriting, Sara Groves influences the influencers. Her most vocal admirers range from pioneers of Christian worldview music, including Randy Stonehill, Michael Card and Charlie Peacock, to her peers today, Natalie Grant, Jars of Clay, Nichole Nordeman, Point of Grace and Bethany Dillon.

Sara has been nominated for many Dove Awards over the years, including "New Artist of the Year" in 2002. She was named one of the best Christian music artists of 2005 and the album, Add to the Beauty, was named "Album of the Year" for 2005 by CCM Magazine.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Shaun Groves

Shaun Groves became a devoted follower of Jesus in the 6th Grade. Immediately a fire was lit in his heart to use music for God. He practiced and studied, earned a full ride scholarship and graduated from Baylor University with a bachelor's degree in music composition. His songwriting style is often introspective. It is insightful and deep. But depth comes from times of despair.

Time on the road, away from his family left Shaun depleted and his relationships strangled. He took some time off to focus on family and partner with Compassion International. Helping orphans around the globe has become a major focus of his life, let alone with music career.

Shaun's career has taken a multimedia approach using his website to blog, share insight on Twitter and Facebook and make YouTube videos about everything from what his kids had for lunch, to how the Church can help communities. Shaun likes to say he has the "gift of sarcasm" - he uses wit and charm to always point back to the cross.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Shana Strange

Shana Strange's passion is worship. Whether as a participator in corporate worship or living a life that worships Christ - worship is her calling. She has been leading worship for the past 6 years at events and is currently a worship leader for House Refuge Church, TX. But her journey to worship was born out of pain. Being a Christian the majority of her life did not exempt her from feeling un-important, un-needed, and un-original. Shana was also born with some physical impairments that were a constant source of pain for her.

Shana has competed and received excellent marks for her songwriting and vocal abilities at such competitions as GMA's Music in the Rockies and various regional talent competitions. Shana also studied with Nationally recognized vocal coach Tim Carson, founder of Vocal Artistry. She has a degree in Religious Studies and is a certified Precept Ministries facilitator which has enabled her to speak at various women's events.

Shana's struggle with overcoming low self esteem has now become the platform she uses to help other women trapped in the same bondage. Many women have been set free from the bondage of self hatred through the ministry God has birthed in Shana.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Shane & Shane

Tune in for Josh's interview with Shane Everett (of Shane & Shane) today at 5:30 PM!

Life is a whirlwind for Shane & Shane. After both settling down, getting married and having three kids between the two families, it looked like their national music careers were over. They Shanes took on worship leading at their home church and had resigned themselves to just being local musicians and family men.

But God had other plans. After a season of growing with their church, experiencing fatherhood and impacting lives of young people through discipleship God began to write songs through Shane & Shane once again. Really good songs. The best songs they had ever written. After sending a demo to some friends in Nashville they immediately got picked up my Fair Trade Records (MercyMe).

It took nearly a year to fully produce The One You Need, but in the end it became a career album. One of immense depth and as Shane E says, one that is all about the Gospel. The album is full of Good News! It's all about Jesus.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Matt Maher

Over the past few years Matt Maher has made the transition from full-time ministry at his home church in Mesa, Arizona to life as a respected worship leader with an international platform.

Leaving behind the comfort and security of home is a scary thing. But by following God's call, Maher has had the chance to write some incredible worship songs and work with other gifted worship leaders such as Chris Tomlin, Matt Redman, Brenton Brown, Audrey Assad, Jars of Clay and Hawk Nelson.

Matt Maher's challenge to those he worships with is, "In a post Christian society, everybody is called to be a missionary wherever we are. The mission field has changed. The mission field is everywhere."

It's not the first time Matt's faith has been challenged by change. Originally he's from Newfoundland, Canada - so Arizona is a wee-bit different. And Matt's mission field is expanding. This summer he and his wife welcomed their first child. A son, named Michael Conor.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Barlow Girl

Since releasing their self-titled debut in 2004, sisters Rebecca, Alyssa and Lauren Barlow have continuously inspired fans with intimate portraits through music. The focus is always on sharing what God has placed on their hearts. whether that be through a song on an album, or talking with a group of young fans for hours after a concert.

The girls' dad Vince Barlow is a pastor at Willow Creek Community Church outside of Chicago. Becca, Alyssa and Lauren got their start playing as his backup band for youth events. A lot of their lyrics deal with issues like eating disorders, self-mutilation, abortion, prayer and self-worth.

Fun Fact:
Years before Barlow Girl became a band, the group Superchic[k] wrote a song called "Barlow Girl" after meeting the sisters and being impressed by the stance for purity.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Julian Drive

Shane Bowers (vocals, guitar) and Shaun Bennett (keyboard, guitar) form the nucleus of the band. They got their start leading youth worship at church in their small hometown in rural Clarke County, Georgia. Winning the 2004 Exalting Him talent search in Georgia pushed them into regional and national touring - and it has been a steady plodding every since.

Shane Bowers shares online and in concerts about the struggle he and his wife went through shortly after getting married. They experienced three miscarriages and this led to some difficult times in their relationship to each other and with God.

Shane says, "Although the truth in God’s Word helped us overcome this part of our life, certainly in our flesh we were saddened for a time. Even now we think of those wonderful gifts that we never got to meet. However, our blessed hope and excitement In Christ, is that we’ll certainly meet again, and this time there’ll be no more parting of ways. It’ll put to death any sadness we may have left in these fleshly bodies."

The Bowers have not had two healthy boys in less than a year's time - but they have taken their suffering and turned it into songs to minister to others who are struggling with their own pain. That's the story behind their latest album "Beauty Behind the Pain."
