When most people think of the tropics, they imagine sunshine, beaches, a gently swaying hammock and little umbrellas sticking out of a coconut shell. When I hear the word "tropical" I immediately think of gusty winds, high humidity, slanted rain fall, and the loss of electricity. At least what we are receiving today is considered "extra-tropical" and is far less dangerous. Fingers crossed that we don't lose power tonight. Elena will be upset if our Tivo doesn't record Bones.

Israel Houghton



Breaking down barriers and defying categorization with his music, Israel uses his own multi-cultural upbringing as a reference point with a desire to draw people of all races, ages and cultures together. Israel laughingly describes himself as “black kid who grew up in a white family in a Hispanic neighborhood.”

And he does it well - garnering Grammy's, Dove Awards, Top hits and tremendous success in everything he touches! On September 10, Israel played guitar and sang back-up for the Tonight Show Band on Jay Leno! Pretty sweet (if anybody still watched Leno...)!

I have been to the desert. It is beautiful in its own way, but there is so little life because there is such little water. Water = Life! Jesus promised a spring of living water that would never leave us thirsty. Water takes up the vast majority of the surface of the Earth, and yet the poverty stricken areas of the world struggle to find a safe drink. (Check out The Blood:Water Mission) We are blessed to be surrounded with one of the most beautiful things God ever created.

Matt Brouwer

Nova Scotia - it's not a PBS program, it's a place in Canada, and just so happens to be where Matt Brouwer is from. He left behind milk in a bag, the Royal Canadian Mounties, and frigid winters to live and lead worship in Houston, TX.

Matt's career has been spent just under the radar - with radio hits tracing back to 2001. Instead of taking that initial success on the road, he chose to spend a few years doing missions work around the world.

His latest project (#3 for whoever's counting) is called "Where's Our Revolution" and it asks a lot of tough questions about faith in a hurt and dying world. Matt’s organic pop melodies reveal a lyrical honesty that is both refreshing and, at times, raw. Examining faith, unveiling the vulnerability of relationships, and issuing a call to justice are themes that express his experience as a musician and a missionary.

“Beautiful Now” is a challenge to step outside of comfort zones: You need something to break your heart/You need something to tear your world apart.

One of my favorite movies (Gattaca) has a scene where two brothers are swimming in the ocean, racing to see who gives up first and has to swim back to shore. It's a moving scene, where the underdog son wins because he doesn't think about the swim back. Seriously a good movie - worth Netflixing. I personally have grown accustomed to swimming the cement pond, but we have a beautiful Bay for chlorine haters.

We live in a world desperate for peace. We know that real peace comes from Jesus Christ. But we are also blessed to live in a peaceful place. A place where you can go sit out on the dock and listen to the water, the wildlife, the boats. Turn off the laptop and cell phone and just sit sometime. You might be surprised to find yourself talking to God.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Tenth Avenue North



The core of 10th Ave. North began as a group of college kids living in student housing at Palm Beach Atlantic College (Now a Christian University) in West Palm Beach, Florida. Between playing regional shows, moving band members in and out and all around, and finishing college, the band headed to Nashville, scored a few Dove Awards and released a couple of super awesome albums.

They refer to a quote from Jon Foreman (of Switchfoot) for their outlook on life in the music industry, “dodging traffic at the intersection of art, faith, and commerce.” They have all served as Church leaders and preach that if emotion isn’t being evoked by truth, well, then it just doesn’t last. They are on a mission to introduce people to worship beyond the goosebump feelings.

Faith is hard.

Why is it harder to believe Jesus will and is taking care of you than it is to believe He died and was ressurected to save us from our sins? The act of salvation happened thousands of years ago, yet I believe it to my core. But when it comes to finances and health I get panicked over whether God is there.

There is no simple answer to having faith. It is hard. That's why it takes so little faith to make such a big difference. Mustard seeds are tiny - yet just a little faith, the Bible says, can move mountains.

Please pray for WOLC as we approach Shareathon (Oct. 20-22). It is a time where our faith and your faith is pushed out in the open. We are forced to actually trust that God will provide financially for this ministry (as He has for nearly 4 decades) rather than just working hard to ensure success. Hard work is good - but without God's intervention it is simply not enough.

Located on the Pocomoke River in downtown Pocomoke City, the Delmarva Discovery Center (DDC) is a living museum, a place for learning and discovery for visitors of all ages. The immersive and engaging exhibits take visitors on a timeless journey through Delmarva and through the Cypress Swamp. ARTIST OF THE DAY
Allison Short

Singing since age 3, Allison, a native of Northern Virginia, has always loved music. In high school, she won a contest which allowed her to sing onstage with Christian singing group Plus One and in 2002 she traveled as a soloist with the Continental Singers on their “Live It Up” tour.

Through her music, Allison hopes to touch people from all walks of life, but the focus and passion of her ministry is reaching and encouraging young women. She strongly believes God has called her for such a time as this, where so-called "role models" practice promiscuous behavior, and purity is scarcely held in high regard. Teenage girls today are flooded with peer pressure and constantly struggle with poor body consciousness. "To love ourselves, we must first come to realize how much we are worth to Christ," Allison says.

Allison's desire is to give young girls the tools they need to stand up and live to a higher standard of which God has called them. Allison’s vocal influences include the powerful voices of Janna Long (Avalon), Linda Ronstadt and Sheryl Crow. She has a love for a variety of music genres ranging from country to blues to rock to gospel, not unlike her debut album, “Only for a Season.”

I remember starting a See You At The Pole meeting at my Christian high school. It was this new thing - from somewhere out in Texas - where you would go to school early, and pray at the flagpole. Simple. Not easy. There were just a few of us there. Pretty much just my carpool.

Flash forward one year. Nearly the entire school formed a circle that stretched around the parking lot as we prayed for our friends, school, city, nation, and world. One thing I love about See You At The Pole (SYATP) is that at its heart it is NOT about making a bold stand for Jesus in the face of opposition. It is NOT a battle cry against the system. Rather it is about showing love.

I remember explaining to people who asked what we were doing - "We are praying for you. We are praying for your test scores and health and basketball games ..." SYATP was a chance to let people know that you cared enough about them that you would be a bit of a public spectacle, not to draw attention to your own courage, but to Jesus. My youth pastor always reminded us that "people don't care what you know, until the know how much you care."

So kudos to the kids who showed how much they care today at SYATP.

#67. Chicken and slick dumplings

Chicken N Dumplings is not native to the Eastern Shore. They have it down South but Southern dumplings are more like biscuits than the "slick" noodley dumplings of the Mid-Atlantic. With Fall here (it officially began a little after 11 AM today) I wanted to give you a recipe to warm your hearts and bellys!

Chicken & Slick Dumplings Recipe

3 Cups of All-purpose flour (I always use Gold Medal)
3 tsp of salt
6 tablespoons of shortening
about 1 cup of warm water.

Mix flour and salt together in a large bowl
Cut in shortening with a pastry blender
Add the warm water a little at a time until in forms a dough ball that is still a bit sticky
Roll out to about 1/8 thick and cut into squares
Drop them in boiling broth and cook until they are done

You can make them ahead of time and place them on a cookie sheet (single layer) and freeze them. Once they are frozen put them in a ziploc bag for storage. Drop the frozen dumplings into the boiling broth. Dont thaw them out. They get all gooey.

At the heart of this band is married couple Pat and Heather Eddolls. As teenagers, they met at a bar, moved in together and shared a raging drug habit. Their lives were out of control. At 18, Heather found out she was pregnant. She left Pat and went back to church where she had grown up. Pat agreed to go to Church with her. They couple got married while Heather was pregnant with their daughter.

Both accepted Christ and watched in amazement as God transformed their lives of drug abuse and sin into a holy family. But they admit it wasn't easy. The years of transition from teenage rebels to Christ honoring parents and spouses was not easy. They use their band as a chance to share their story of Christ's love and to teach others to worship.

Last night I had the pleasure of attending my first small group meeting with my new church. It was awesome to start getting to know my church family in a more intimate setting. I'm not trying to recruit you to my church, but I do want to emphasize how incredibly crucial being a part of a church is to your walk with Christ.

Jesus even surrounded himself with a tight knit group of folks (the disciples). He modeled it so we would continue it. If you have a church - go! If you don't - check out our Area Church Directory to find a place near you where you can learn, grow, work in your community.

#66. The Elks Swim and Golf Club

Fred Flinstone had his Royal Order of the Waterbuffalo - but Salisbury offers a version with fewer dinosaurs. Founded in December 1902 the Salisbury Elks #817 was formally chartered on July 23, 1903. The current Lodge location was opened in January 1950. You have to be a member to enjoy the swimming accomodations, but the golf course is playable to the public. I want to learn golf. I'm decent at putt-putt.

A fresh coat of paint can do wonders. This weekend we transformed our bedroom from a sea-foam green to a warm honey color. Instant gratification! Now our bed set and furniture match the room, and it feels like "home."

And now to the sappy metaphorical part: Sometimes life needs a fresh coat of paint. From pampering yourself with a mani-pedi (Elena says it's great, I wouldn't know), to trying a new job, or changing Majors at school. Routine can be comforting, but don't let the ease of sameness rob you from adventure!

Pizza is like Chinese food - everyone has a different opinion about what is "good." Route 12 is a Salisbury pizza joint where you can dine in, pick-up or opt for delivery (if you're in the area). I cannot cast judgement because I haven't had it, but online reviews run from good to bad and everywhere in between.

After The Chase



After the Chase is comprised of husband and wife team, Nathan and Jenna Strong. The name of the band, After the Chase, comes from an old Southern saying about romance: "He chased her until she caught him."

"Throughout our lives," says Nathan, "we find ourselves chasing after God, only to find that God has been catching us all along. Our music is our response to being caught up in the unconditional love offered to every one of us by the Creator of the universe."

Their sophomore album "Make Me New" captures in song their emotions and journeys of the last few years. Just like the book of Psalms, it is filled with fervent prayers, heartfelt worship, and anguished questions.

#64. Hike Rehoboth's Junction & Breakwater Trail

With Fall arriving, and more comfortable temperatures accompany the falling leaves, it's time to get outside and explore! While we don't have a lot of hills on the Eastern Shore (at least the lower part) you can explore some lovely trails in Rehobeth Beach, DE. Junction & Breakwater Trail is the longest at Henlopen State Park, at 6 miles long, wear comfortable shoes.

Jeremy Camp



In 2002 Jeremy Camp burst on to the scene with STAY. An album that chronicled his faith through the loss of his wife to cancer after only one year of marriage. It was real, hearfelt, and powerful. Now seven albums into his career, multiple Dove awards, platinum records, and a new family under his belt - Jeremy Camp's authenticity continues to inspire.

Jeremy and his second wife (Adie Camp, who used to front the Christian band The Benjamin Gate before launching a solo career) now have two daughters who often times accompany the singing couple when they tour the world.

Did you ever sell World's Finest Chocolate for a school fundraiser? I used to make bank selling those chocolate bars to grad-students during mid-terms. I also remember selling gift wrapping paper, candles, books, pizza coupons and Krispey Kreme donuts.

I'm not sure what the educational purposes were behind using me (and generations of school kids) to hock stuff to unsuspecting neighbors, grandparents, and church members. Did it teach me about being an entrepenuer? Not really ...

I want my cut! Instead of wages, I think they gave me cheap fair trinkets and the promise of school upgrades that never happened ...

#63. Big Thursday

Like oysters? Big Thursday (which is ironically now held on Sundays) is the celebration of the end of restrictions for the oyster harvest. North Bowers Beach, DE uses this historic celebration of oysters to bring in some tourism dollars. There's the fire company sponsored car show, races, concerts, cook-offs, etc. etc. It's a fun weekend of seafood, so I'm there. This year's celebration is past - but there's always next year. Unless the government places a ban on oysters again.

ARTIST OF THE DAY:
Mark Schultz

Mark Schultz isn't in Kansas anymore - but that's where he got his start. He was born and grew up in Colby, Kansas (just up river from Monterey Jack, MO) and graduated with a marketing degree from KSU. He then moved to Nashville, TN to put his marketing degree to ... no use whatsoever. He became a youth pastor at First Presbyterian Church in Nashville for eight years.

With numerous chart toppers, Dove Awards, and album sales - Schultz has become a staple on Christian radio around the world. He's toured with other big-names and invited some of them to co-write with him on his latest album "Come Alive." Matthew West, Bart Millard, and Joy Williams all pitched in to make his 5th studio release something special.

A couple of years ago, Mark biked across the US as a fundraiser for The James Fund, which provides for Mexican orphanages. He travelled over 3000 miles on a bicycle. Ouch! Oh, and check out his CALENDAR! Hilarious!

Right now Schultz is traveling abroad with his wife Kate. They are spending the entire month of September exploring Europe together for Mark's birthday! Jealous. This winter Schultz is headlining the "How Many Kings" Christmas tour, which is currently booking dates.

Doctor's offices are never fun. No matter how nice they make it - you are still at the doctor which means you or someone you know is probably sick, and more than likely you will have to step on a scale.

Even worse is when the doctor's scale is like 40 pounds different from your scale at home. There are a lot of incredible doctor's, practitioners, nurses, and lab workers that know how to put a smile on your face, even when you are sick. But I'll be honest, I don't ever want to see those people.

Oh, and I had a check-up this morning. The apple consortium lies. Apples don't keep doctor's away.

The windows are open at my house. It's just barely mid-September. Where I'm from, the great outdoors are fairly unpleasant until maybe mid-late October. The idea of Fall beginning in September might end up on the 102.5 Shore Things list at some point - because this is just marvelous!

The group formed in 2005 as a vocally charged concept from Gospel Communications International. They toured with David Phelps and Russ Taff for a while, speaking on an initiative called "Gospel Response to AIDS" - a 10 year project to educate sub-Saharan Africa.

It appears that the group disbanded sometime in 2007. Their website is gone, and their myspace page has not been updated in years. So enjoy their legacy!

Stephen Marshall



Growing up the eldest son of a father with mafia connections, Stephen's youth was spent on the run. While his dad turned to drugs to deaden his personal demons, Stephen's mother embraced Jesus. She taught him that even in the midst of adversity, Jesus could provide peace, joy and unconditional love; that God is a Father to the fatherless. This set the course for Stephen’s life and music.

At the age of seven, Stephen began to find his solace as a musician. Songwriting became a safe emotional outlet. One day Stephen saw Johnny Cash singing a gospel song on TV and discovered the missing piece: music that had spiritual power to transform lives.

Along with a couple of albums for sale, Stephen Marshall has a DVD Off the Record, where you can get to know him and worship with him on a deeper more personal level.

It's the middle of the first or second full week of school for many. Things are starting to click, routines are forming, laundry is piling up ...

Now that we are in to it, are you ready for Fall? Are you ready for football, tests, fieldtrips, soccer practice, jackets, and pumpkin spice coffee? I'm tempted to throw in a "ready or not ..." but that seems cliche.

A lot of times stuff happens in life that we aren't ready for. That's happened numerous times in my life, and my gut reaction is to quickly try to create a better, more detailed plan to stay on track. And then I get derailed again! I'm not saying planning is a bad idea, but I have to be careful that I don't plan my way out of God's plans. I'm guilty of living my life and hoping to see God, instead of living God's life for me and experiencing the Joy that comes from being in His presence.

So don't cling too closely to routine, and remember why we are here - not for our benefit, but His.

Plain and simple, Wayburn Dean wants to worship Jesus with you. Known for his vocal prowess in the multi-million-selling group Acappella, Wayburn’s musical ability gained him much acclaim during his 5 ½ year stint with the group.

From 1993 to 2001, Wayburn decided a reprieve from touring and recording would give him a chance to refocus. He dived into helping worthwhile causes, devoting his time and efforts to important philanthropic organizations. He and his wife, Janae, became involved in several projects together, including developing a Sunday School curriculum for middle school students. But the further Wayburn walked away from music, the more melodies he seemed to hear, and eventually, the music had to come out.

Wayburn and his wife formed a non-profit organization called Afterword Music. They have donated thousands of cds to missionaries and churches in Vietnam, India, Jamaica, Brazil, New Zealand, and other countries.

Humility is one of those rare things that when they define a person, you easily see Jesus in them. That's the case for Jason Gray. He grew up as a chronic stutterer in an abusive home, but through the Grace of Jesus Christ, struggles to make his music about loving people.

Jason Gray also struggles with the pressure between art and business. "There is constant pressure in our entertainment oriented culture to be amazing and impressive," Jason says, "to wow audiences with gimmicks, to get on the charts. I wrestle against that because it can be a heart killer and completely irrelevant to God's calling in my life. I'd rather be real than impressive."

I was told I must go here to understand the DelMarVa way of life. Red Roost has been recognized as one of the best places for a crab feast on the Eastern Shore by something called a "newspaper" out of Baltimore. The Red Roost was originally a chicken farm, then a campground/RV park, but the oil embargo of the 70s turned it into a restaurant.

Right now they have an "All You Can Eat Blue Crab Feast" for $27.99 and according to my man Jay Prouse, now is the time to get crabs. They also have a secret formula for fried chicken that pairs well with seafood.

Labor Day: A WikiHistory

The first Labor Day in the United States was celebrated on September 5, 1882 in New York City. In the aftermath of the deaths of a number of workers at the hands of the U.S. military and U.S. Marshals during the 1894 Pullman Strike, President Grover Cleveland put reconciliation with Labor as a top political priority.

Fearing further conflict, legislation making Labor Day a national holiday was rushed through Congress unanimously and signed into law a mere six days after the end of the strike.

Traditionally, Labor Day is celebrated by most Americans as the symbolic end of the summer. The holiday is often regarded as a day of rest and parades.

There's something serene about a little fishing hole with cattails - a piece of American splendor that abounds all over the Eastern Shore.

Austin's Bridge



Austins Bridge broke onto the national music scene with their debut self-titled album in 2007 and the strength of the project resulted in the band winning the 2008 Dove award in the category of Bluegrass Song of the Year, “He’s In Control.” They also received two additional 2008 Dove nominations for New Artist of the Year and Country Album of the Year.

The band's sophomore release "Times Like These" hit shelves this past May, and has already churned out a couple of sweet radio singles, including "Mercy," heard here on Joy! "Times Like These" features the strong harmonies of Austins Bridge that spotlight Christian lyrics with a deep Country/Bluegrass sound.

Seriously, this holiday that gives us a little extra rest came from a time of riots in New York City. Then President Grover Cleveland and Congress rushed through a National holiday in fear that the newly formed Unions would bring the US economy to a screeching hault.

There's an economy joke in there somewhere, but I'm too lazy to grab it. Happy holiday!

This Wilson, NC native has a powerful voice, and a heart for worship. Seriously, her album does not do her justice. Live, you will not believe the big voice that comes out of the tiny little girl on stage!

On September 1st, Meredith and her husband Jacob welcomed their first child into the world. Maverick Elijah Sooter weighed in at 8 lbs 2 oz and 21 inches long! Congratulations Meredith and Jacob! And 400 bonus points for naming your son Maverick! That is awesome!

She's a Liberty University grad, just like Joy In The Morning's Rodney Baylous. We'll have to get them together and see if they know the words to their Alma Mater's fight song ...

New Life Church in Colorado has a sprawling ministry all about worship that includes a worship school, multiple bands, a choir, and some amazing materials for other churches to use! Jared Anderson, The Desparation Band and Glenn Packiam all come out of the New Life Church music ministry.

A.W. Tozer once wrote, "Thirsty hearts are those whose longings have been wakened by the touch of God within them." And New Life Worship exists to bring people to a place where they can experience that touch from God.

ARTIST OF THE DAY:
Kutless



This Portland, Oregon band is named Kutless in homage to their favorite Bible verse, Romans 6:23. They say that since Christ took our punishment, He leaves us "cut-less" - and since they can't spell in Oregon, we get Kutless.

Initially heralded as a hard rock band, it wasn't until the band released their first worship album (Strong Tower) that they hit the jackpot. Their rock infused worship was the spark of a firey career (too much?).

Their latest project, another worship album called It Is Well continues their tradition of great music + great worship songs = awesome. They're record label also released a greatest hits album of the band, The Beginning: A Kutless Anthology.

This weekend they'll be playing a show in Accident, MD - which is closer to Pittsburgh than us - but in January they'll be in Ocean City.
