It's one of those lazy, crazy, hazy days of summer...

Newsong

After 30 years and 20 #1 radio hits - Newsong is still pushing the limits to reach a new generation for Christ. Members have come and gone - and some fresh young musicians have joined the core group to produce a sound that is both fresh and classicly Newsong.

When Eddie Carswell and Billy Goodwin, who continue to lead the evolving group, started out in 1981 at Morningside Baptist Church in Valdosta, Georgia, neither of them imagined NewSong would repeatedly outdo itself for so many years. Now the guys are headed into their fourth decade of music and just keeps getting better!

After nearly a decade away, award winning front-man Russ Lee returned to the group.  Give Yourself Away was the result - an album that sounds like Newsong AND the 21st century. Give Yourself Away was once again produced by Charlie Peacock (the guy behind every awesome DC Talk album) and features the vocal harmonies you expect from Newsong, but a punch of fresh musical perspective.

Legit: Newsong founded WinterJam - an American tour that has featured everyone from Newsong and TobyMac to MercyMe and Mandisa.  It's a roving music festival that refuses to charge more than $10 a person - bringing the music you love to the masses!

Tree 63

Hailing from Durban, South Africa - this pop rock trio spent the last decade touring the world with a message of encouragement for the body of Christ - and hope for those who don't yet know Him. Tree 63's music sounds like a happier U2. They spent much of their career touring with fellow imports, The Newsboys and Rebecca St. James.

While they saw huge success in Australia and the UK - Tree 63 also got plenty of US radio play with hits like Blessed Be The Name and Sunday.  After 12 years together, Tree 63 disbanded - leaving a legacy of great music and lasting friendships around the world.

Lead singer John Ellis struck out on his own with a debut solo release Own Way Home and this year Ellis is releasing another album called Rural. The rest of the band packed up their families in Nashville and headed back home to South Africa.

Brandon Heath

Since his 2006 debut, Christian music has twice honored Brandon Heath as Male Vocalist of the Year (2009 and 2010 GMA's), he's been nominated for two GRAMMYs, an American Music Award, and holds multiple GMA Dove Awards.

Off stage, Heath seeks opportunities to merge his public platform with his heart for community, regularly working with Young Life, Blood:Water Mission, Restore International and unofficially volunteering for many other human rights agencies on a global scale. Heath also created the annual “Love Your Neighbor” benefit with songwriter Jason Ingram, in partnership with Fellowship Bible Church in Brentwood, Tennessee, for a night of music to raise funds and gather volunteers for a focused need in the Nashville community.

Testimony: When he was just 3 Brandon's parents divorced. Growing up, Brandon was bitter towards his family, but he found comfort in Christ while in high school. At age 16 Brandon was invited to a Christian camp with some friends. He accepted Christ and began to learn about forgiveness.

Jessa Anderson is a twenty-something married mom from Michigan who is living a dream right now. To be a working singer/songwriter releasing her second label offering is an overwhelming blessing. Drawing from an influential pool of strong female songwriters such as Sara Groves, Nichole Nordeman and Ginny Owens, Anderson’s music reflects a constant wrestling with the unknown and the darkest parts of humanity right alongside the gritty, everyday things that make up the human life.

Family: Her husband Jordan writes and co-writes her music, playing guitar with her in concert as they raise their daugther on the road.

Healing: Jessa speaks at length in concert about how her relationship with Jesus got her through an eating disorder in college.  She hopes to be an example of grace for other young women.

Things Jessa Loves: Her husband, Jordan, her adorable daughter Lorelei (whose name was inspired by a “Gilmore Girls” character), Nashville, songwriting, traveling, honest conversations and missions.

This native Missourian has been leading worship for over 13 years.  While his touring is generally limited to the Mid-West, he's just one radio hit away from being an in-demand artist.

He shared the stage with MercyMe, Mandisa, Hawk Nelson and many others for Restore Fest in Joplin, MO - a community that was ravaged by tornados just over a year ago.

Church: Mark is the Worship Arts Director at Morning Star Church outside of St. Louis, MO.  When he's not writing songs and leading worship - he's teaching others to do the same!

It's gonna be a great weekend for watermelon consumption!  Also, time to stock up for July 4th fireworks fun - just a week and a half to the biggest cook-out day of the year!

The Sonflowerz

The Sonflowerz are a British-American sister duo born in 1999 when Elissa Leander began writing original worship songs at the age of 14. Encouraged by her youth pastor to form a band with her sister, Becca, they began performing at various venues across Colorado. The act’s first album, You Remain, and single, Crazy Love, were released in 2002. Their sophomore effort, Alive in You, was released in 2005.

The Sonflowerz have shared the stage with artists such as Third Day, Jeremy Camp, Kutless, Barlow Girl, Needtobreathe, Sanctus Real and Phil Wickham. 6-time Dove Award-winner Don Koch produced their record, All Over The World.

Weird: The girls have always been close - and since they were both engaged at the same time, they decided to have a double wedding ceremony.  Convenient since many of their relatives live in England and only had to make one trip.

Cover Girls: This month, Elissa and Becca are featured on the cover of Christian girl magazine Susie.

Sure, you can plug away at the church and club scene - playing every show you get offered and working for food and a closet to sleep in. Or you can score a chance to open for Third Day - get noticed by Mac Powell who then moves you from Australia to Atlanta, produces your album and gets you nominated for New Artist of the Year at the GMA's.

Option 2 is the route that Australian band Revive took. Smart move.

Of course that sort of change can be daunting. After the initial success with their debut album, original guitarist Tyler Hall decided to move back to Australia with his wife. Several performers filled in and toured with the other founding members.

The Ending: Recently the band decided to part ways and head back home to Australia.  Still, 10 years after a garage band from the Sydney suburbs first formed, a stellar international career is no small feat.

TV: ABC's Secret Millionaire recently featured their hit song "Something Glorious!"

Bebo Norman

Jeffrey Stephen "Bebo" Norman is from Columbus, GA. He was originally involved in Young Life Ministries and gained a considerable fan base by performing at the summer camps there. He made friends with the members of Caedmon's Call and toured with them for years.

Back before it was fairly normal for independent artists to be successful, Bebo Norman sold fifty thousand self-made copies of his first record (1996) at coffeehouse shows, out of the trunk, and online. Now, as a recognized singer/songwriter in the Nashville-Christian community, he still keeps a low profile. He likes to quietly do his thing, without the trappings of the limelight.

Family: Bebo and his wife have two young sons - Smith and Miller.

Character Profile: Bebo Norman likes to restore things. He drives a refurbished 70's model Ford Bronco and thinks he’d be good at fixing up old houses someday.

Watermark (Nathan & Christy Nockels)

Christy met her husband Nathan in 1993 at a Christian Artists Seminar in Estes Park, CO. They married in 1995 and the two began serving as worship leaders in their local church in Oklahoma City, while Nathan finished college at Oklahoma Baptist University. It was during these early years that they began writing songs together in their tiny, one bedroom apartment. In 1996, the two made an album entitled Holy Roar under the name Sons & Daughters with fellow worship leader and friend, Charlie Hall. Louie Giglio, the founder of Passion Conferences, got a hold of this album and invited Christy, Nathan and Charlie to attend the very first Passion Conference in Austin, TX in 1997.

Eventually they signed a recording contract as Watermark and moved to Nashville, TN in 1998.  Together as Watermark, Christy and Nathan recorded five albums with Rocketown Records. They composed a journey full of songs, 7 of which were #1 radio singles. They have been nominated for numerous Dove Awards.  After 5 albums, Christy and Nathan felt led to end their Watermark season to focus on other areas of ministry. This gave Christy more time at home with their children, and more availability to focus on leading worship and even teaching some for various women's events.

Christy and Nathan have continued to serve at Passion Conferences and in 2008, they moved to Atlanta, GA to be a founding family of Passion City Church. Nathan produced and co-wrote Christy's recent solo album.

It's the middle of June - the Summer is just beginning!

This Greenville, TX band has been cranking out number 1 hits and gold and platinum albums for almost 20 years. In fact, it was 12 years ago that they wrote and recorded a song that transformed Christian music. You might have heard of the tune "I Can Only Imagine."

Charts: MercyMe's 7th studio album The Hurt & The Healer debuted at No. 7 on the Billboard 200 top albums.  That's not just Christian albums - that's every album!

Funny: The group’s name, “MercyMe”, originated during Bart’s time as a youth ministry intern in Florida. Bart’s grandmother would exclaim, “Well mercy me, why don’t you get a real job?”

Little Known Fact: Bart Millard was a footballer in high school until he sustained an injury to his ankle. He took up choir in school as an elective and never stopped singing.

Matt Maher

Over the past few years Matt Maher has made the transition from full-time ministry at his home church in Mesa, Arizona to life as a respected worship leader with an international platform.

Leaving behind the comfort and security of home is a scary thing. But by following God's call, Maher has had the chance to write some incredible worship songs and work with other gifted worship leaders such as Chris Tomlin, Matt Redman, Brenton Brown, Audrey Assad, Jars of Clay and Hawk Nelson.

Matt Maher's challenge to those he worships with is, "In a post Christian society, everybody is called to be a missionary wherever we are. The mission field has changed. The mission field is everywhere."

It's not the first time Matt's faith has been challenged by change. Originally he's from Newfoundland, Canada - so Arizona is a wee-bit different. And Matt's mission field is expanding. Last summer he and his wife welcomed their first child. A son, named Michael Conor.

Caleb Rowden

Caleb Rowden is a husband, worship pastor, and musician. He's traveled the United States to tell the story of how messed up his life was before he met Jesus - and how amazing life is now because of our loving God.

History: Caleb Rowden debuted with Free From Ordinary in 2005 and toured with Casting Crowns, MercyMe, Skillet, David Crowder Band, and many more.

In 2007, Caleb accepted a worship position at his home church in Columbia, MO and for a couple of years he plugged away in the local church.  After a time, Rowden felt his passion was leaving him. He missed the stage and traveling to share his story.

Politics: Caleb Rowden is currently running as a candidate for State Representative in his district of Columbia, MO.

Josh White and guitarist Brian Ortize formed Telecast as a grunge rock worship band out of Spokane, Washington.  They have released several worship albums and the individuals in Telecast have been a part of other notable bands, including Rock & Roll Worship Circus, Ruth, Esterlyn and Starfield.  Josh White also released a solo album called The Followers, which was a reworking of many centuries old hymns and other worship songs.

Where are they now?

Well, Brian Ortize is the worship pastor at Reality LA, a church out of Los Angeles, CA.  Josh White helped plant a church in Portland, OR called Door of Hope - which was planted out of Solid Rock Church where he was a teaching pastor and worship leader.

Calling Levi

Calling Levi is a group of four gifted vocalists who have traveled throughout the country and all across the world. This full-time, traveling, vocal ministry is a family group of two sisters and their husbands.

The group met and began to take shape at Liberty University (where Rodney went!). After college, Rob and Stephanie (one half of the quartet) spent a year singing with World Help - a mission organization out of Forest, VA. In 2002 they all relocated to Delaware, where God fully formed Calling Levi.

In 2010 the group traveled over 200 days of the calendar year, lifting up the name of Christ and pointing others to Him. Those who know the ministry of Calling Levi know that their sole desire is to magnify Christ through heartfelt music and testimony.

Levi (Matthew) was a tax collector that left everything behind to follow Jesus. The name, Calling Levi, was born out of the concept that Americans are living in the world’s wealthiest nation. We have so much! We are the Levi’s of our world. How are we responding to Christ’s call? Are we fully committing our lives and our possessions to His purpose?

Press Play formed by worship leader Dave Hanley in 2008. They tour internationally and have worked with some of the biggest names in the Christian industry including Darlene Zschech, Group 1 Crew, Rachael Lampa, Israel Houghton, Britt Nicole, and Mary Mary.  They've also taken the Gospel to stages shared with secular artists (even Katy Perry!).

Paige Adkins was the band's first lead singer - she's the daughter of comedian Sinbad, but the group has a rotating cast and after the first album Adkins was replaced by Sada Jackson.  That first album also featured Darlene Zschech (yeah - the one from Hillsongs).  Right out of the gate, Press Play saw lots of success, performing on NBC’s TODAY Show, meeting with ABC, appearing on FOX News and with features in national newspapers, magazines and on numerous national TV outlets.

Press Play is currently serving at New Hope West Coast in Simi Valley, CA and is inbetween albums and tours.  Their last album (which came out last year) featured guest vocalists from Group 1 Crew and Shake the Nation - and features several new members to the band.

Natalie Grant

Natalie Grant is an award winning singer and songwriter. She scored four consecutive Female Vocalist of the Year Awards (2006-2009) at the Dove's and is never far from the top of our charts.  She could easily live on the road and rake in the dough, but Natalie is not afraid to take time off to simply be a wife and mom to her three kids. She is adamant about fulfilling those Biblical roles first and foremost - always keeping her famly before her incredibly successful career.

Born in Seattle, she currently lives in Nashville with her Canadian music producer husband, Bernie Herms, and their three daughters which includes a set of twins.

Beyond her artistry, Natalie Grant is an advocate for victims of human trafficking. The Home Foundation, which Grant created in 2005, has raised over a quarter of a million dollars to fight the trafficking of women and children for the purpose of sexual exploitation. Now The Home Foundation has expanded into Abolition International.

Ayiesha Woods

Born in Long Island, New York - Ayiesha has lived in many different places and cultures including Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, and Texas. Plus she spent much of her childhood in Bermuda, which gives her unique sound some Caribbean spice!

Ayiesha is the granddaughter of a professional musician and the daughter of a musical man, so she was surrounded with opportunities to hone and develop her natural talent.  Throughout high school she found herself singing in chorus, playing in the school band, harmonizing in the church choir or participating in musical ensembles - plus she was endlessly fiddling with guitars and pianos, picking out melodies to sing along to.

Ayiesha Woods was "discovered" by Toby Mac while he was visiting family in Jamaica.  The local Jamaican station was playing Ayiesha Woods music and he noticed the lyrics were about faith.  Toby Mac hunted her down and immediately signed her to Gotee Records.

Family: Ayiesha and her husband just welcomed their first child (JJ) into the world a few months before Mother's Day. It was a very special celebration for her family.

Peder Eide

For over a decade, Peder Eide has led Christ-centered praise and worship for youth conferences, festivals, camps, churches and any other venues students and their families have gathered. For Peder, it's all about effective communication as we draw closer to God and closer to one another.

His passion is for teaching families to worship together and to truly learn the power of praying for one another. He works to unite parents and children, siblings, and spouses - all in worship. Instead of separating the generations for worship, he aims to bring everyone together, blending many styles of music so that no one feels left out.

As an active artist/spokesperson for Compassion International, Peder is humbled to have seen thousands of third world children sponsored through his ministry. He has also experienced the joy of his own family sponsoring many children.

Peder, along with his wife Sherri adopted two children from other nations, Makenzie and Teshome. Combined with their three biological children, Taylor, Allison, and Ethan, the Eide's have uniquely tasted worship together and have truly seen the goodness of the Lord though their diverse family.

Random Fact: Peder dreamed of being on the PGA tour - and plays golf whenever time affords.

Ashmont Hill

Ashmont Hill was born out of the community in Boston, Massachusetts that shares the name.  Phil Thompson, sisters April Joy Thompson and Deborah Bullock, along with Deborah’s husband, Wil Bullock make up the pop-gospel quartet.  The siblings' father is bishop of their home church (Jubilee).

The group draws inspiration from a diverse pool of talent - from Annointed to Michael W. Smith to the Winans, Hillsong, Leeland and many more!  “Our Dad instilled in us from the beginning the need to be a church without walls,” says April.

Last year Ashmont Hill got the opportunity to open up Natalie Grant's tour - securing them a loyal following and hopefully that will lead to some more great music in the near future.
