Hurricanes. I've run from them, fought them, been KO-ed by them my entire life. I don't know if Earl will bring us anything more than a breezy day, but there is one thing everyone should know in preparation for the hurricane.

It is NOT MY fault! I didn't bring it here. So don't blame me.

The end.

Getting to know the Eastern Shore

#51. A nice walk on Assateague Island

Natural beauty abounds on the Eastern Shore, but the untouched beauty of the Atlantic shoreline on Assateague Island is truly something special. To see wild horses running free sounds like something in the great plains - but we have it right here, less than 3 hours away from Washington DC!

#50. A really good oyster sandwich

ARTIST OF THE DAY:
Jars of Clay

Jars of Clay has been an industry leader for over a decade. Their song "Flood" was a game changer for Christian music - launching a decade of new careers and music that helped make Christian radio the fastest growing genre in North America.

The band's newest project SHELTER hits shelves Oct. 5. It features the new hit song on Joy! 102.5, "Out of My Hands."

Here's what the band has to say about the new song:

Thoughts on "Out Of My Hands"...

Charlie: The only thing we can do in response to what God has done for us, is to give our hearts away and love unconditionally, as a response to how we have first been loved.

Dan: We cannot save our own lives, nor can we change our own ways. God has given us to each other, failures and success combined.

Stephen: It's humbling to know in our lowest moments that God's purposes are made complete in and through our weakness not our strength.

Matthew: Never has there been a more suffocating delusion to live under than the one that says our lives are ours to control.

And for just 2 days (now - Thursday afternoon) you can stream the entire album a month before it even gets released! Nice right? Click Here to check it out!

Have you ever been on a road trip and you know something is wrong with your car, but there is absolutely nothing you can do about it until you get back home? That was me this weekend. About an hour out of the driveway, the car starts kicking back a little when accelerating. The transmission light comes on. Not a thing I can do. I have committed us to a wedding on the other side of Virginia, and we MUST make it.

I'll tell you this, it did wonders for my prayer life! Then as we are getting close to the Bay Bridge on the way home yesterday, a trailer door swings open in front of me and I'm face to face with a startled cow, trying its best not to fall out of its pen at 65 mph on Hwy. 50!

I thought "This is how I'm going to die. A cow at 65 mph ..."

#50. A really good oyster sandwich

According to WOLC General Manager Debbie Byrd, there’s an Indian tribe that has a little trailer set up on the road to Crisfield and they know how to make a fantastic oyster sandwich, as well as the Fruitland Fire Company. Back in NOLA, where I am from originally, we have oyster po-boys - which are similar in nature, but the seafood here has a less oily taste ... hahaha - get it?

ARTIST OF THE DAY:
Adam Paul Williams

While his heart is for modern worship, Adam Paul Williams' pedigree is in Southern Gospel. He even sang some shows with the famous Gather Vocal Band, and Bill Gather has been a driving force behind his young career.

He works closely with churches, having led worship for In Touch Ministries and Andy Stanley's church in Atlanta. He yearns to minister to the brokenhearted sitting in the pews every week. Adam and his wife Kellie were torn up for the people of Guatemala after a recent mission trip, and now sponsor a child through Compassion International.

Adam is currently working with Ed Cash for a 2011 project. Why does that matter? Ed Cash is THE guy in Nashville. Producer for Chris Tomlin, David Crowder, Leeland ... pretty much everybody who is anybody works with Mr. Ed.

Five years ago, today, I packed a weekend evacuation bag in preparation for what was only a small category one hurricane. Two days later, Katrina came ashore as a category five storm and destroyed my hometown. This weekend my family, and hundreds of thousands of other survivors will experience a lot of emotions.
Pray for us. Thanks.

Needtobreathe

Brothers Bear and Bo Rinhart lead this southern rock outfit from Possum Kingdom, South Carolina. No joke. That is a real place. The brothers grew up in an Assemblies of God church where their father was the pastor. In many ways, their isolated environment helped create the band's authentic and bluesy sound.

They've seen some incredible success these last couple of years! Formed in 1999, Needtobreathe built an impressive regional following, playing throughout the Southeast. They toured non-stop, recording at their home studio and got noticed by Hollywood producers, who have used their music in television and film.

Everyone has bad days. It's a given.

We've been reading through Job in staff devotions, and I'm confidant in saying I've never had a Job-sized bad day. Although Job was not at fault for the awful things that happened to him, he complained loudly - and God answered him. It was not smiley-loving-God that came to Job's rescue though. It was All-Powerful-Who-Do-You-Think-You-Are-To-Question-Me-God. Job had to cower under God's gaze as the Almighty showcased how big He is - and how small we are.

Nobody likes to be put in their place - especially by God - but Job takes his licks, and God blesses him beyond all measure. It reminds me of a Proverb that more or less says, "it's a loving parent that disciplines their child." So if you are going through "the fire" right now, know that God, who is mighty and fierce and all-powerful, is also the loving, kind Parent. That probably won't comfort you while you are in the midst of challenges, but maybe on the other side it will help.

ARTIST OF THE DAY:
Alex Edmonds

This southern belle hails from Crossett, Arkansas. She grew up heavily involved at her home church, First Baptist Church Crossett. She sang in her church children's choir, and as a teen, transitioned into leading worship with the youth group band. It was pretty apparent to everyone that God had called Alex to use her voice for Christ - something she had sensed since she first got saved at age 9, during Vacation Bible School.

With only a debut EP under her belt this 19 year old is really just starting her career! She continues to record, tour, and watch as God uses her life for His glory.

Interesting Facts about Alex:

Fave Food: Mexican

Hobbies: Hunting & Softball

Fave Movie: Remember the Titans

Favorite Boardgame: Battleship

Fall is just around the corner, and I can't wait! I believe God put a deep-rooted desire in our hearts to embrace change. Even if it is just the changing of the seasons, there is a hope that inevitably comes with a new beginning. So if you are in a season of despair or hurt, my prayer for you is that with the changing of the season outside, you begin a new season inside as well.

Keith and Kristyn Getty are pioneers in the modern-hymn resurgence. Their goal is to bridge the classic with the contemporary. Though hailing from Northern Ireland, the Gettys call the US home for now. They lead worship for their church and record old and new hymns.

Plus, Kristyn works steadily on children's records, musicals, and more. Bringing a celtic sense of awe, to modern worship music, the Getty's are doing solid work in a growing area of Christian music.

Did you know that "google" is an official verb in the dictionary? It means to search the internet. Google the company tried to sue to have it removed - but because it has become such a part of modern vernacular, the suite was tossed out. I know this because I googled it.

#46. Long Wharf Park in Cambridge

It's a long wharf (not to be confused with Michael Dorn's Worf from Star Trek The Next Generation). It's a lovely glance at the nautical life, where at least a couple of Skipjacks are docked (and can be chartered, but that is another addition to the list). So if nautical nonsense be something you wish, forget Sponge Bob, and take your square pants over to Long Wharf!

ARTIST OF THE DAY: Dan Macaulay

Today's artist is an import. From Canada, but still. His debut album "The Listening" was produced by Nathan Nockels (one half of Watermark) and scored Dan "Worship Album of the Year" and "Male Soloist of the Year" at the 2007 Shai Awards (Which might be a big deal in Canada, but who is going to brave the cold to ask them?).

When Dan Macaulay isn't drinking milk from a bag, chasing Mounties, or electing William Shatner to public office (all things Canadians do) - he's making great worship music in the vein of Michael W. Smith and Jason Upton.

You've heard several of his songs on Joy! Here's the story behind the song of "Listening"...

It has been said, “the best worship songs are a bi-product of just worshiping.” And that was exactly how the song “Listening” was born. It was after a young adult service in Calgary Alberta, where I had led worship that night, and while I was back at the piano during an altar response time the core of this song came to be. I had begun improvising and just singing out what I felt was appropriate to what God was doing in hearts around the altar, and out it came: “Light of the world, shine on me. Won’t You light my pathway. Truth and the way speak to me. I’m listening.” It was just one of those things where I knew right away there was something to it and I just kept singing it over and over. Partially cause it was appropriate and partially, if I’m honest, ‘cause I didn’t want to forget it! ?

This weekend is all about yard work at the Millwood abode (That's my house). Mowing, edging, weed-eating, de-weeding, pruning, and trimming ... I need a shower just thinking about it all. Shane Bowers (vocals, guitar) and Shaun Bennett (keyboard, guitar) formed the nucleus of the band while leading youth worship at church in their small hometown in rural Clarke County, Georgia. With the help of a few fellow friends they elevated the level of intensity from just another youth group worship band to a full fledged, no-holds-barred, ministry-oriented, Southern alt-rock band.

In 2006 the guys quit their day jobs and committed to a musical lifestyle full-time. It's had ups and downs - adventures, and the tedium of driving in a stinky van between gigs. But Julian Drive is just beginning!

The band's latest is an EP, Beyond Our Eyes (A short teaser for the full length album due out in January) - and is available at fine online retailers everywhere. (As long as everywhere is iTunes...)

Andrew Peterson

Discovered by Caedmon's Call, Andrew Peterson is a singer-songwriter who isn't afraid to challenge the norm. He was nominated for "Country Recorded Songs Of The Year" at the 2004 Dove Awards, though a country artist he is not. He's spent over a decade touring with artists Caedmon's Call, Derek Webb, Nicole Nordeman, Jill Phillips, and other members of the mysterious "Square Peg Alliance."

The SPA is a group of Christian artists who push the envelope when it comes to lyrics and reaching the lost for Christ by actually going to them, rather than hoping they show up at a church show.

So Andrew Peterson is not your cookie-cutter Christian artist. He's got convictions, he lays his struggles out in songs, and isn't afraid to be who God made him, rather than to be what the suits at the label say. Bravo, Mr. Peterson!

His latest album is called Counting Stars

"Rain, rain on my face. It hasn't stopped raining for days." - Jars of Clay

I still remember when "Flood" became a huge crossover hit. Jars of Clay became the Christian calling card for the world. We could point at them and say, "See, it's not as bad as it used to be!" Now Christian music is the second fastest growing radio market in the world, with greater quality than ever before! So thank you, Jars of Clay. Thank you for upping the ante.

#42. Bridges

Have you ever driven through the Mid-West? I have. It's is beyond boring. A Stuckey's gas station might break up 100 miles of corn or wheat. The entire state of Indiana smells like pig farms all summer. But on the Eastern Shore, we have bridges! Which means there are scenic creeks, rivers, lakes, the bay - There is natural beauty that we didn't pave over, but elevated ourselves above to enjoy their splendor! So even if you have a panic attack trying to cross the Bay Bridge, bridges are still an awesome part of the Eastern Shore.

You know, I'm thinking it might be better for your career to lose on American Idol. Phil Stacey made it to the top 5 before being bumped from the show - and he's doing just fine! This native of Kentucky brings a southern rock charm to emotional lyrics, and an honesty that is just plain ole endearing!

While we know Phil Stacey as a singer and song-writer, his priorities are a bit different than many rising stars. Topping his list? Husband, Father, Military, Music Minister ... and then finally recording artist! Both grandfathers and his dad were pastors, so Phil has grown up in the Church, and that is where his heart is.

Mikeschair

Mikeschair was born out of a dorm room at Nashville's Belmont University. Music could always be heard coming out of Mike Grayson's dorm room, attracting other musicians to volunteer in his jam sessions. Before long, a band had formed!

How did the name "MIKESCHAIR" come about? Well, the rest of the guys lived on a different floor of the dorm - but Mike was the epicenter of the band - so the guys bought Mike a chair to make him feel more at home hanging out of their floor of the dorm. Since college boys don't like sharing, Mike put a sign on the chair reading, "Mike's chair."

Some bands have to tour a long time to get their big break - but just a few weeks into the band's inception, the guys won Belmont University's Music Showcase competition, got signed to CURB Records, played a ton of shows and got themselves nominated at the Dove Awards for Song of The Year (For "Let The Waters Rise"). Other bands must hate these guys ...

Chris Rice

Chris was born and raised in Clinton, Maryland, a suburb of Washington D.C. A shy kid, according to his family members, who say that even as a kid he "observed everything, and seemed to be studying and mulling over thoughts and people all the time." The mixture of nature, history, and four brothers would inspire Chris and prepare him to be one of Christian music's most decorated song writers.

With six studio albums under his belt, Chris continues to explore new avenues of expression through writing his own magazine and producing other upcoming artists. His songs have a bluesy flow and range from deep worship songs like "Untitled Him (Come to Jesus)" to love songs like "When Did You Fall." And of course Chris wrote and recorded "The Cartoon Song."

Chris Rice leads a wave of Christian song writers that aren't afraid to delve past the traditional 100 Jesus'-per-minute, predictable Christian radio songs, and explore social topics, romance, and sometimes vivid allegories inspired by great writers like CS Lewis.

Mercy Me

I can only imagine a world without "I Can Only Imagine." This year the band celebrated the 10th anniversary of their hit song - a song that has impacted lives across the globe, and given a group of worship leaders something incredibly elusive in the music industry: job security!

The band is determined to bring low-cost, high-value experiences to the fans. They committed themselves and many of their friends (big names like Jeremy Camp and Sanctus Real) and new bands worth getting to know, to charging as little as possible at shows. This late-summer the band is touring state fairs! Fun! (No, they aren't coming here - but they will be in Baltimore this October)

Their latest album The Generous Mr. Lovewell is based on a fictional character bent on showing love and grace within and outside the walls of the Church. And it's good. REAL good. Both a love letter to the Church and an admonishment at the same time (very Paulian).

Raised near Pittsburgh, PA - Aaron Shust has spent most of his adult life in Georgia (not of the former USSR, but the state down south). Currently he's the worship pastor for Perimeter Church in Duluth, GA - which is where he recorded his break out hit "My Savior, My God."

Shust grabbed 3 Dove Awards during his "rookie year." Nabbing Songwriter of the Year, New Artist of the Year, and Song of the Year. 2007 was a good year for the Shust family ...

Some people have that sort of success and think, "I should move to Nashville and be a rock star!" But not Aaron. He's happy being a husband, dad, and worship pastor. Season 5 of American Idol was perhaps that last great year of the show (now entering its 9th year). Mandisa was a fan favorite, going to the final rounds despite dealing with some harsh words from the judges about her weight. She has discussed at length in her book Idol Eyes: My New Perspective on Faith, Fat & Fame, that those hurtful words cut deeply, causing a lot of immediate pain and embarrassment.

Since falling off of Idol, Mandisa has seen tremendous success on Christian radio. She brings the funk, the pop, the flavor! And she cut out a lot of flavor too. In her diet. Mandisa has lost over 75 pounds in between albums!

Mandisa's sophomore album Freedom was the only female debut to hit No. 1 in the 27-year history of Billboard’s Christian Retail Chart. Pop, soul, gospel - Mandisa breaks the mold with her style - and we dig that!

Their heart is for production, and they run their own studio (Inertia Sound Studios) in Lakeland. Chris also founded and leads an outreach to students at the University of South Florida.

Did you hit the beach this weekend? We took my inlaws to OC, and it was a perfect day to be outside. And the waves ... my goodness! They were huge! Whether your weekend was spent outdoors or in, I hope it was good - and I hope you are ready for a great week here on the Joy Ride!

#35. Fisher’s Caramel Popcorn

I've been told the best way to eat caramel popcorn is fresh from Fisher's on the boardwalk. It would have to be better than the caramel popcorn I'm used to. It comes in a giant tin with a cardboard divider between the caramel corn, cheesy corn, and some other random powder flavor covered popcorn. Seriously, folks - stop the epidemic of giving those giant tins of stale popcorn as Christmas party gifts. It must stop.

ARTIST OF THE DAY:
The Afters

The Afters are one of those bands that despite sticking to their Christian lyrics and lifestyle have seen some solid success in the secular market. MTV has featured their music on several shows, plus they've been featured on Dr. Phil, Rachel Ray, and Grey's Anatomy. It's one of those things where when you do what you do excellently for the Lord, you never know how He'll use it!

Before becoming The Afters, the line-up went by the moniquer "Screaming Mimes" and then "Blisse." The Screaming Mimes was in reference to the famous quote of St. Francis Assisi"Witness at all times. Sometimes use words."

Awesome Fact: The band's original 4 all met and worked together at Starbucks.

"Light Up The Sky" drops on September 14th. Look for it!

Have you ever bought or been given a beach game kit? One of those bags that comes with a wobbly net, horseshoes, and sometimes croquet? Such a waste of money. You use it maybe once, lost pieces or break it in the process. Volleyball and badminton can be frustrating when your net is made of yarn. You know what is a good beach investment? A Frisbee. Cheap. Hard to break. Great way to make friends.

This concludes my beach gear recommendations ...

ARTIST OF THE DAY:
Nicole C Mullen

NCM has been in the music industry a long time. A lot longer than even I thought. Back in 1991 she released her first album, but found her success as a writer and back-up singer. Did you know that she and her husband co-wrote Jaci Velasquez's Dove Award winning "On My Knees!?" She sang back-up for Michael W. Smith and The Newsboys! She also recorded songs for the VeggieTales!

WOW! Quite a career with just that, but then in 2001 "Redeemer" hit the scene. She won Doves for Songwriter of the Year and Song of the Year for "Redeemer." Throw in a Grammy nomination for her "Everyday People" album, and a couple more Doves in 2005 and it is apparent that NCM is just warming up!

With the White Marlin Fishing Championship wrapping up over today and tomorrow in Ocean City, it got me reminiscing about my fishing excursions. I am an awful fisherman. I'm more of a stand-around-and-get-sunburnedman. One time I got sunburned on my knees after sitting on a friend's boat for 4 hours out on a lake. Not one nibble, but I couldn't walk for 2 days. Fish that I catch aren't measured in pounds, but rather ounces.

Not only do farmers' markets help the local economy, but you get the freshest of produce! Where I come from, there were no farmers, let alone markets for their goods.

ARTIST OF THE DAY:
Travi
s Taylor

Texas-born + California-life = Travis Taylor's laid back, authentic music!

Taylor's debut "You Have Loved" blends rock, pop, and folk to deliver a worshipful experience with musical depth.

“I am a worship leader at heart, so I write songs for the worship arena,” Travis says. “But I also write songs about my wife; songs about my kids; songs that are just about everyday life. Of course there is an element of faith that runs throughout these songs, even when I’m not singing specifically about God. I think good music is good music and I don’t think people will be confused by hearing a love song next to a worship song on an album, as long as both are great songs.”

Travis leads worship for his church in one of the ritziest neighborhoods in Hollywood. He attributes the authentic love for Christ and desire to perform the best by his church's members as the reason he tries to break molds with music - to create art as a form of worship. He encourages everyone, in whatever it is they do not put themselves in a box, and live boldly for Christ.

I saw a recipe for a refreshing beach drink that I must try soon! You take a seedless watermelon and cut a hole in the top. Then mash up the inside of the watermelon, add ice, lime juice, and a little bit of sugar. Stir that all together and put the top back on like a lid. Then you are good to go. The watermelon rine acts as a natural cooler. Sounds good, huh? It might make a good snack when you go check out #32 on our 102.5 Shore Things list ...

ARTIST OF THE DAY:
Jeremy Riddle

Homeschoolers get to claim this acclaimed singer and songwriter. Jeremy was raised in New Jersey along with 6 siblings - homeschooled from kindergarten through high school. At age 15 he raised and broke his own horse! Always the Renaissance Man, Jeremy learned the guitar by playing worship music at his church.

He graduated from Cal state Fullerton with a BA in political science. Jeremy attended and later served as a youth pastor at the Anaheim Vineyard. Riddle is married with 4 children and now lives in Redding, California and is part of the worship ministry at Bethel Church.

Like many raised in the Church, Jeremy shied away from Christian music in his twenties, but after a good "talkin' to" by his dad, embraced his calling to create worshipful music, and lead others to God's thrown through music.

You can get the song charts for all of his songs here: http://www.jeremyriddle.net/index.php/songs

#31. Surf fishing.

Prepare to get wet! If you prefer to keep your feet dry, stay on the dock, but if you want fishing to be a battle between you and creation - surf fishing might be the way to go! While surf fishing is not what I initially thought - fishing while surfing, it does present its own challenges.

ARTIST OF THE DAY:
Selah

Eleven years, seven albums, five Dove Awards - by the numbers, Selah has a pretty impressive resume. The current roster is Allan Hall, Amy Perry, and Todd Smith (Nicol Sponberg was also a founding member - and Todd's sister. She left the group in 2004 to work with her husband in ministry and pursue solo projects).

The group, like most folks, has weathered many storms. From the death of children, through illnesses and line-up changes, the group has stayed faithful to what God has called them to do - to sing, to worship, and to tell people about Jesus Christ!

Have you ever surprised someone at the airport? Next to going to the mall on Christmas Eve, the greatest place to people-watch is at an airport. From tearful reunions with screaming children, to loneliness, to romantic embraces - spend an hour in an airport and you will experience the full scope of human emotions.
This past weekend, my wife, daughter, and I surprised my parents at BWI. They were returning from a long week spent in Atlanta and Birmingham for conferences, meetings, and a wide range of family issues. They were beat. Defeated. Exhausted. So we decided to give them something to smile about while they waited for their luggage.
Never underestimate the healing power of a granddaughter! Baby-kisses make the endless wait at the luggage carousel seem like no time at all. But why do people wait at airports? Why not meet at home, with a meal on the table?
I've been thinking about that, and I think there is something sewn in to the human condition by the Creator about anticipating arrival at our destination. We fear our flight towards eternity - and hope that Jesus and loved ones are waiting for us when we arrive. So when you end a journey (big and small) in this life, we hope to find someone waiting for us (even if just subconsciously).
My goal? Be someone who welcomes everyone at the end of life's journeys.

And now ...

#30. Hot homemade donuts from DeVages. (early in the morning when they’re still hot!)

There are few cravings more dangerous to my waistline than when the image of a donut takes root. It's fried bread with sugar! Come on! That's just unfair! While I haven't yet been treated to DeVages, I just know that one of my awesome co-workers will bring some in for me ... right guys?

ARTIST OF THE DAY:
The Katinas

This band of brothers from the Samoan Islands have been touring and recording for the past 15 years! Their latest project “Still”, is the first release off of their own Record label, Destiny Productions.

The group is made up of 5 brothers (out of a dozen siblings) who seek to share the Gospel through music and ministry all over the world. They watched their dad battle alcoholism, lost their mother to cancer, and experienced devastation when a tsunami hit Samoa. But through all their trials, they have witnessed the healing power of Jesus Christ!

The band started their own missions project to reach the islands of American Samoa. They use music and other tools to reach the many low income areas of their home. You can check out their missions work here: http://www.katinamissions.org/
