Last day of May - how will you make it special?

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Leigh Nash & Sixpence None The Richer

From New Braunfels, TX - Leigh Nash started singing country music and learning old country songs on the guitar at the age of 12. She had several years' experience singing in local cafes and performed regularly at a Texan country & western dance hall. She met guitarist and songwriter Matt Slocum at a church retreat in the early 1990s and they formed Sixpence None The Richer.

Sixpence's mega-hit "Kiss Me" was a massive crossover success.  That one song landed them on countless movie soundtracks, allowed them to perform on The Late Show with David Letterman and scored them multiple Dove awards and a GRAMMY nomination.

The band's name comes from the writings of CS Lewis. Leigh Nash explains:

[The name Sixpence None The Richer] comes from a book by C. S. Lewis called Mere Christianity. A little boy asks his father if he can get a sixpence—a very small amount of English currency—to go and get a gift for his father. The father gladly accepts the gift and he's really happy with it, but he also realizes that he's not any richer for the transaction. C.S. Lewis was comparing that to his belief that God has given him, and us, the gifts that we possess, and to serve Him the way we should, we should do it humbly—realizing how we got the gifts in the first place.

Over the years, Sixpence has disbanded and gotten back together a couple of times, while Leigh has recorded a couple of solo albums and fronted several other bands in Nashville and even in Canada.  She has also recorded several songs with her friends in Jars of Clay.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Todd Agnew

Todd Agnew modeled his early career after Rich Mullins. He was a lone gun, describing his methodology as, "I've always been kind of the hammer - walk in, speak the truth, blow up the town, walk off and let all the pastors apply that truth or pick up the pieces." If you've seen him in concert you know that he isn't afraid to stop mid-song and tell the crowd exactly how he feels.

But in 2008 Todd went from flying solo all over the world to owning a home, getting married, and becoming a step-dad. You can imagine that changes your perspective. His latest album is filled with a sense of Joy, Hope, and Love that had been missing in both Todd's life and his music.

His latest album How To Be Loved is filled with the lessons of Grace Todd has learned over the past couple of years being a family man.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Shane & Shane

Life is a whirlwind for Shane & Shane. After both settling down, getting married and having three kids between the two families, it looked like their national music careers were over. They Shanes took on worship leading at their home church and had resigned themselves to just being local musicians and family men.

But God had other plans. After a season of growing with their church, experiencing fatherhood and impacting lives of young people through discipleship God began to write songs through Shane & Shane once again. Really good songs. The best songs they had ever written. After sending a demo to some friends in Nashville they immediately got picked up my Fair Trade Records (MercyMe).

It took nearly a year to fully produce The One You Need, but in the end it became a career album. One of immense depth and as Shane E says, one that is all about the Gospel. The album is full of Good News! It's all about Jesus.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Heather Williams

Heather Williams grew up in extreme poverty with her mom and stepfather. Throughout her early childhood, she suffered intense abuse and was even chained to a tree for punishment in one instance. Her mother gave her away at age 11, and Williams went to live with her grandfather in Michigan. Living with little guidance and the pain of past abuse and rejection, Williams turned to drugs and alcohol as a way to numb the realities of life. As things began to spiral out of control, the young teenager began to have thoughts of suicide and was even homeless at one point.

At age 18, however, the dangerous road Williams was on took a U-turn when she briefly reconnected with her birth father. Her father, a Christian, invited Williams to church.

“I came to this place where it was either, OK, I’m going to give my life to God, or I just don’t know if I’m going to live. So, I walked up that aisle at that church, and I gave my life to God.”

Having grown up with a love of music, after becoming a Christian, Williams says she began to write songs from a perspective of radical change. But then another wave of tragedy struck the budding singer/songwriter when her first child passed away shortly after he was born. But this incredible tragedy only drew Heather closer to God.

For Williams, she describes her songs as “conversations,” sometimes joyful, sometimes angry, sometimes a mix of both. Today, Williams is grateful for how far grace has brought her. She and her husband, a full-time youth pastor, live in Florida with their two young children.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Among The Thirsty

Among The Thirsty is Christian Contemporary/Modern Worship/Rock band from the Tampa Bay area of Florida. Formed in 2004 by two high school buddies, Among the Thirsty has developed into a nationally touring band, reaching across the country with their powerful worship, razor sharp rock, and funk.  Once coined "The Fab Four of Christian Music", Among the Thirsty has been able to cross age barriers and genre lines to bring a type of music that reaches the entire listening audience.

“Our purpose is to present a unique style of the Gospel to the world through our music. We strive to live a life that is worthy of God's presence, to proclaim the Majesty and Holiness of Christ with our gifts, and to speak words of hope and life to all those who are searching and hurting. We make a strong effort to be straight forward with the gospel and not to be timid when sharing the Good News. All these talents and gifts have been given by the grace of God and from a heart of thankfulness we continue to Thirst for more of Him."

About Wonder: Front-man and lead guitarist, Ryan Daniel says this album was birthed from a heart to reach people with the hope and the love of Christ. The Wonder of God's love is at the foundation of this project.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Chris Rice

Chris Rice was born and raised in Clinton, MD - just outside of Washington DC. His parents were bookstore owners.  The woods and creeks of Maryland, the political and historical scene of Washington D.C., and a house of four brothers was the setting that made Chris Rice into the introspective, humorist and songwriter that he is. After several years of college-hopping Chris finally landed in Tennessee in his mid-twenties, with a Bachelor's degree in Psychology and Communication, and a curiosity about the music business.

It turns out that Chris was tailor made for songwriting. He's been nominated and won multiple Dove Awards, but always paced himself with a laid-back optimism that never quite fit in with the music scene. As an oddity Chris Rice stands out as sincere and patient.

Chris Rice has slipped from public life after releasing What A Heart Is Beating For back in 2007.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
The Afters

When The Afters broke out onto the scene with Never Going Back to OK, it didn't seem like anything could stop them.  But life's circumstances quickly changed everything.  After losing their longtime friend and manager to a two-year battle with pancreatic cancer, two band members decided to part ways with the band, and then there was a life-threatening car wreck followed by a new member of the band losing a close friend one week after joining the band.

It was a rough season of change for The Afters. Holding on to their faith and their passion for making music, has kept the band focused throughout the mess of it all.  Through the pain, faith grew in abundance and that is definitely the message behind their latest album Light Up The Sky.

Exposure: Despite being full-tilt Christ focussed in their lyrics and lives, The Afters have had some secular success as well; featured on MTV, NBC's The Biggest Loser, Dr. Phil, Rachel Ray, and Grey's Anatomy.

Name Game: Before becoming The Afters, the line-up went by the moniquer "Screaming Mimes" and then "Blisse."

Double Soy Latte (hold the foam): The band's original 4 all met and worked together at Starbucks.

The Afters are:
Founding member Josh Havens (lead vocals/keys/guitars)

ARTIST OF THE DAY
No Other Name

Comprising brother-sister duo, Sam and Laura Allen, along with their friend Chad Smith, the group met at a Nashville music conference. All three admit to knowing early on they shared a musical chemistry.  During an impromptu singalong at the Ryman Auditorium, the trio realized their ability to harmonize perfectly was something God ordained.

Shortly after forming their singing group, No Other Name caught the attention of legendary record executive Mike Curb who soon tapped them to become part of the Curb Records roster that includes Natalie Grant, Selah, Plumb and other Christian music notables.

Acts 4:12 is a favorite verse of the group; “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved." The scripture encapsulates the essence of the gospel and defines the mission statement for No Other Name, a trio of talented young vocalists, dedicated to spreading the good news—and spreading it everywhere.

Missions: Shooting music videos for “Lead You to the Cross” in Dubai, United Arab Emirates and “Let It Start With Me” in Bangkok, Thailand also served to underscore the group’s aim to spread the gospel worldwide. No Other Name is a strong proponent of international missions and has partnered with the International Mission Board to help recruit missionaries while joining the organization on recent trips to Nicaragua as well as Brazil.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Above the Golden State

Michael Watson, songwriter and lead vocalist of the group has no doubt as to why he is doing what he is doing. “Music is from God and for God. And I believe God is raising up a new generation of young musicians who want to see music being used for its original purpose – to glorify God.”

In the cool, culturally minded streets of Portland, Oregon, Christianity, like much of the city’s music scene, is basically underground. So the band feels like they get to live and love in spiritual trench warfare. After all, it's in some of the most repressed societies that the message of Christ thrives, all around the world.

“How Jesus is moving in our church locally is the lifeblood of our ministry.” - Michael Watson

Above the Golden State was born while Michael Watson was studying at Calvary Chapel South Maui.  I guess if you are going to do seminary work, Hawaii is a good place to go.  A friend secretly sent out a recording to Michael to Sparrow records and it was not long before their A&R department was hounding Watson to sign with them.

Go Fish

Go Fish is three guys (Jamie, Andy and Jason) bringing fun accapella fueled music to families and young children! Everything they do is geared towards introducing kids to Jesus through music, dance, visuals and fun.

Kickin’ It Old School is the latest installment of the biblical foundation for kids and families that Go Fish has been building since their 2003 children’s music debut, Splash. Leaving behind a career in Christian pop, the trio turned their attention to making music exclusively for kids.

Recently Go Fish has also put their vocal spin on classic hymns, like Before the Throne of God Above. In Kickin' it Old School, Go Fish has recorded hymns and classic praise songs to introduce children to the worship music of their parents and grandparents, but in a style that is relevant today.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Royal Tailor

Fusing pop, rock, R&B, hip hop and worship into a distinctive musical blend, Tauren, Blake, Jarrod and D.J. deliver the Gospel in a high-energy style that drives audiences to dance, pray, shout and sing along.  After meeting in Bible college and forming the band, they spent a year working full time at their church in Granite City, IL, mentoring and teaching the youth to sing, play and take over worship services.  They refused to leave the church to tour until the worship team was prepared mentally, emotionally, spiritually and musically to take their place.

When Royal Tailor hit the road and began performing 300+ shows in less than two years, the band left behind an on-fire group of young worshippers ready to share their gifts with the church.  During that process of equipping the youth, the members of Royal Tailor also learned a lot about themselves. The guys found their hearts were broken for the younger generation and seek to use music to bring healing and hope to kids everywhere.

"The overarching message is a call to action," says Tauren. "A lot of our songs have to do with being Christ in the world.  We want to create a culture where students are doing the ministry. They are creating the ideas. They are dreaming the dream,  and then they are actually going out there and doing those things."

The Hook Up: Leeland and Jack Mooring (of the band Leeland) became fans of Royal Tailor, had them open for one of their tours and pushed their label to sign the young band.

Line-Up:

Tauren Wells - Lead Vocals
DJ Cox - Guitar
Blake Hubbard - Bass
Jarrod Ingram - Drums

Style: Musically Royal Tailor sounds like a cross between Bruno Mars & Maroon 5

Spring Friendraiser

Why is this week important?  Because we need your help.

Joy 102.5 is a listener supported station and we find ourselves stretched very thin.  There's a laundry list of needs - but you can help!  Every gift; whether $5 or $5000 will go to help us make ends meet - to continue to broadcast the good news of Jesus!

Please consider partnering with us for the first time - or maybe it's just been a while.
Call us at 410-543-9652 or toll free at 877-569-9652.
And you can always give safely and securely at WOLC.org.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Kristian Stanfill

Kristian Stanfill grew up in church.  He loved music, and even taught himself to play guitar. As soon as the church youth group heard he could play a few chords, he immediately became the so-called “Worship Leader.” He learned songs by DC Talk and Audio Adrenaline, and eventually Passion and Chris Tomlin.  In just a few years time, Kristian would join Tomlin on stage as a worship leader in the Passion movement!

The Call has been unmistakable in Stanfill’s life, even as that 15-year-old growing up in the Atlanta suburb of Marietta, finding the connection between the strings of a guitar and the Maker of music.

Worship Leader: Kristian Stanfill isn't in this for the money or fame - but to point towards the cross.  He freely offers chord charts for all of his songs for any worship leader or musician to download for free!

Passion: Kristian Stanfill is featured on Passion: White Flag as one of the worship leaders at this year's Atlanta conference.  He led worship with Chris Tomlin, David Crowder, Matt Redman, Charlie Hall and many others.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Kutless

This Oregon based rock group is in the midst of a second musical career. After selling nearly 2 million records and touring the world as a preeminent Christian rock quintet, Kutless found a new voice producing quality worship records.

Their first worship album was Strong Tower - and not only was it a hit with critics and fans, but it revealed the true nature of Kutless' calling - to bring people closer to Jesus. In any industry there is pressure to repeat success and Kutless approached the matter hesitantly. They didn't want to produce another worship record just because everyone loved the first one. The band knew that worship has to be authentic. With much prayer and council from their pastors, Kutless created It Is Well.

Now the band has a new worship album out called Believer.  Even with the success the band is having with worship records they want their fands to know that they exist to "..point to Christ and remind us all that there is more to worship than worship albums. We must live a life of worship." - Jon Micah (lead singer of Kutless)

The Name: Christ took our beating and paid the wages of our sin. Romans 6:23
He took our cuts for us leaving us..."Kutless".
