Have a great weekend!

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Shannon Wexelberg

Shannon grew up sitting at the piano with her grandmother. She was a natural and by the age of 11 she was up front playing piano for her church praise team and writing and singing her first worship songs. Aside from classical training, her piano teacher had a heart for worship that she passed on to her student. Her family also started paying regular visits to a nursing home in their area over dinner hour, singing for the elderly – a precious & most gracious audience. It was Shannon on the piano, her Mom on guitar, and her Dad, brother, Mom and herself on vocals.

Her passion for worship grew as she attended Christ for the Nations and began writing, playing piano and leading worship for their annual worship recordings and morning chapels. Shannon also traveled several summers with CFNI's 'Living Praise' - a music ministry group - and later went on staff in CFNI's music department, arranging and writing for their recordings and directing their praise band. She has also been a member of the Maranatha! Praise Band and taught as a clinician for their Worship Leader Workshops.

Shannon is grateful to have had the chance to write and record three worship albums of her own as well as to have written for and recorded with many other individuals and ministries including: Paul Baloche, Jared Andersen, Charles Billingsley, Scott Krippayne, The Desperation Band, The Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir, Integrity Music, Christ for the Nations, Discovery House Music, RBC Ministries, Word Entertainment, Revive Our Hearts with Nancy Leigh DeMoss and many others.

But as a teenager, God put His calling on Travis' life. Since graduating from Belmont University in Nashville, Travis has been serving God as a worship leader.

As a professional musician, Travis Cottrell has written and performed with Max Lucado, Amy Grant, Cindy Morgan and many other amazing artists. He has written and arranged choral projects and even performed at Carnegie Hall and Abbey Road!

For the last fourteen years Travis has served as worship leader at Beth Moore’s Living Proof Live conferences. He and his team have been grateful to minister with Beth Moore in all 50 states and in several other countries as well.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Jimmy Needham

Jimmy Needham has an eclectic and soulful sound.  He grew up a student of everyone from Caedmon's Call and Keith Green to Stevie Wonder and Jonny Lang.  His bluesy sound makes his songs stand out on radio - similar in style to Jason Mraz or Adam Levine.

Early Life: Jimmy grew up in Denver, CO, went to school at Texas A&M and has an undergraduate degree in History and Philosophy.

Jimmy and his wife Kelly have both frequently write on their blogs about their struggles as a family in the music industry.  They use the outlet and social media to communicate with fans, as well as friends and family.  They shared their heartache of going through two miscarriages early on in their marriage - and the fear they had of losing their daughter, Lively.  Both write about the struggles of touring and being pure.  Their honesty is a cornerstone in the Needham ministry.

His latest album Clear The Stage is actually his 4th label release and 5th album since his debut in 2005.  That's a lot of music in a short period of time.  On the new record he worked with Christian rapper Lecrae and other influential singers and songwriters to craft a very approachable CD that still has his characteristic soulfulness.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Jamie Grace

This GRAMMY Award nominee is only 20 years old!  Hailing from Atlanta, Georgia, Jamie Grace is a college student who aside from her career and touring as a singer-songwriter, is also studying children’s ministry. At age 11, Jamie Grace was diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome, and has since traveled the country sharing her story and faith through music and speaking.

Singing and songwriting just isn't enough for this new power player in Christian music.  She aspires to act as well (especially in musical comedy).  She has a secret Twitter account (@thegrapejam) where Jamie posts her thoughts on whatever she is watching on TV.

Winning: Jamie Grace won New Artist of the Year at the 2012 Dove Awards!  She was nominated for several others, too!

Have a great weekend!

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Tricia Brock

Raised in a Christian home, Tricia and her sister Melissa experienced their share of adversity and struggles. When they met Maz Hsu, a singer/musician, the three girls immediately hit it off. All three felt called to create music to inspire teenage girls like themselves, who dealt with depression and insecurity.

Thus Superchic[k] was born. They would go on to rock the world over, win Dove awards and garner a GRAMMY nod.  Tricia Brock has been one of the lead singers of Superchic[k] for over a decade now. But she and her producer husband Nick Baumhardt felt led to record a worship album. That album is called The Road.

Superchic[k] is not over, but this solo worship project is a collection of songs meant to breathe hope and to inspire new life into a battling heart. “We may be broken, but we’re never destroyed,” the album’s lyrics say. Tricia wants to share that at times the listener may feel without hope, but there’s no need to fear. Hope, refuge and strength are always with us when we are with God.

This week is flying by.
Probably because children and parents are prepping for school to start in a couple of weeks.
You know what they say, "Time flies when you are terrified about your babies going back to school..." Or something like that.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Chynna & Vaughan

The duo of Chynna & Vaughan is the result of a divine collaboration between two artists with diverse musical backgrounds but shared journeys of faith.

Chynna Phillips achieved vast international fame and recognition as a member of the pop sensation, Wilson Phillips.  Despite this extraordinary success, Chynna did not experience true joy and peace until she gave her life to Jesus Christ.

Vaughan Penn earned respect and credibility in the national independent music scene by receiving such accolades as “Top 40 Breakthrough Artist of the Year” (New Music Weekly Awards 2007.) Her songs have been prominently featured in over 100 films and television programs including Grey's Anatomy, Criminal Minds, Numb3rs, Boston Public, The Hills, Laguna Beach, and many others.  When Vaughan was faced with a life-threatening medical condition four years ago, she committed her music career to God. After recovering, she began to write songs to encourage others to develop a relationship with Christ.

Although their musical career paths were distinctive and unique, Chynna & Vaughan formed a creative partnership based on their mutual passion to share the hope of Christ with a hurting world.  They both have other musical and film interests which they pursue.

Bust A Move: Chynna Phillips was a contestant on Dancing with the Stars last year.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Rush of Fools

Rush of Fools hails from Birmingham, AL. They had only played for a short time before entering a contest called "Band with a Mission". Winning the contest, they received attention from record labels, including Midas Records, with whom Rush of Fools soon recorded and released their self-titled debut album.  So what do you do if at first you DO succeed?!

2007 was a year of fast paced change and accolaids.  They earned four Dove Award nominations and the ASCAP Song of the Year.  But changes in the music industry saw their record label collapse.  There were ongoing legal battles over song rights and royalties.  It was a mess.  But the band perservered.

So once school starts back up - how long until Thanksgiving?  (93 Days from today!)

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Jadon Lavik

Jadon was born in Redmond, Washington, where he was raised in a Christian home by his parents and with two siblings. Although he had some experience with music early in life playing violin and guitar, he was most energized about sports and desired to pursue a baseball career. But after an internship at Saddleback church in Southern California, the calling on his life became glaringly obvious.

Jadon Lavik's seminary background gives him a true concern with using Biblical theology in his worship songs. It is sometimes easier for a songwriter to go with what feels good. Spiritual Candy. But Jadon deals with the depths of God's word in his writings.

Now married with two kids, Jadon ministers in the local church and tours the country playing music whenever he can. He also has three Christmas records - which makes him even cooler in my eyes!

Next month, Jadon is releasing his second hymns album called Roots Run Deeper.  Check below for a preview of what will be a compelling and beautiful album!

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Brenton Brown

Brenton has an unusual story. He grew up in Cape Town, South Africa. Studied in Oxford (Rhodes Scholar), England. And now lives in Malibu, California. While studying in England, Brenton Brown became one of the young worship leaders for the very first Vineyard UK. But just when life seemed to be roaring down the highway of success, Brown fell ill with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and was forced to leave his position as worship pastor and take a sabbatical in his South African home town. It was there that he married Jude - also ill with CFS.

Brenton then recorded and released his album Everlasting God. Realizing that a change in pace and lifestyle might assist their recovery in 2005 the Browns reluctantly left London and their home church of Holy Trinity Brompton for California. Since then they have been welcomed into the Horizon family of churches and have traveled across the States and beyond leading worship in churches as far afield as Sweden and Korea. 2008 saw the arrival of a baby daughter named Bella.

Is it just me, or does it feel like school just keeps getting more expensive!?

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Audio Adrenaline

Audio Adrenaline has been disbanded for years now, but their musical legacy lives on in their 15 years of hits, that helped craft a generation of other Christian artists.

Mark Stuart and Will McGinniss met at Kentucky Christian College (now Kentucky Christian University). Stuart and his brother David were putting together a rock band and McGinniss struck up a friendship with the pair. Along with David and Barry Blair they launched the band, originally called A-180. The band recorded two independent albums before signing a record contract with ForeFront Records. It was then that they officially launched Audio Adrenaline.

Christian music would never be the same - or youth camp.  Hits like Big House and We're A Band propelled the band to the forefront of a thriving Christian rock scene in the mid-90s.  They were headliners for every Christian festival on the planet - and toured ceaselessly.  Ultimately, that took a toll on their families and relationships.  Ultimately it was exhaustion and family strain that led to the end of Audio Adrenaline.

In 2004, AA created the Hands & Feet Project, building an orphanage and ministry in Haiti. They still work closely with this project that has met many needs, especially since the tragic earthquake.

Mark Stuart and Will McGinniss more recently found the Know Hope Collective. Know Hope is a community of song writers that work to dig deeper into the question "What is worship?"

More recent songs have included Blessed Be Your Name and You Never Let Go – both written with wife Beth and encouraging us to worship God through the storms of life.

Based in Atlanta they are part of Passion City Church with pastors Louie and Shelley Giglio.  This is the third church plant Matt has been involved with, having previously been on the team for Soul Survivor,Watford, and The Point in the UK.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Avalon

Avalon was formed in 1995 by Grant Cunningham, A&R director at Sparrow Records. Cunningham was in search of a vocal group that could sing tight harmonies and carry God's message to the world. He pooled talent from mega group Truth and other struggling soloists to form the harmony driven vocal group - and its been a whirlwind of excellence for the last 16 years!

So who has that sort of success and says "I think we need to shake things up a bit?" That's exactly what Avalon did with their latest album Reborn. As artists they wanted to be more than just relevant, but to push the envelope and deliver music with a message that will reach the world.

A new week - without the Olympics...

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Caedmon's Call

Caedmon's Call has been producing eclectic, acoustic driven music for two decades. Cliff Young fronts this family of songwriters that includes Derek Webb, Danielle Young (Cliff's wife), Andy Osenga, Todd Bragg, Garett Buell, Jeff Miller and Josh Moore. Ask any Christian performer who they think is authentic in a world of pop culture glitz and they'll tell you, without skipping a beat, Caedmon's Call.

When Christian music exploded in the 90s - playing sold out arenas and massive mega-churches, Caedmon's Call continued (in spite of their great success) to play coffee shops and bars. They always wanted to be where they felt Jesus would be. Caedmon’s Call has sold over a million units of its 15 records to date but has always been more of a community itself than a band.

Caedmon’s also helped launch or boosted the careers of artists like Bebo Norman, Jill Phillips, Waterdeep, and Andrew Peterson. The band is also a longtime promoter of missional living, through their longtime partnership with Compassion International, and more recently with the Dalit Freedom Network, an organization fighting caste discrimination in India, and the band’s own Share The Well Foundation.

Birth: The band formed around an acoustic guitar in Cliff Young's dorm room while they were all still in college. Although Cliff & Danielle had been song writing together while dating in high school.

Fashion: Danielle Young often wears overalls in concert - and the rest of the band now refers to all overalls as Danielles.

MIKESCHAIR was born out of a dorm room at Nashville's Belmont University. Music could always be heard coming out of Mike Grayson's dorm room, attracting other musicians to volunteer in his jam sessions. Before long, a band had formed!

Though they love music, each member of MIKESCHAIR admits it’s about so much more. “We all really have this desire to be involved in ministry,” Hale says. “We are obviously all really passionate about music, but we always want it to be about something more. We saw that we all had the same heart for this and then God just kept opening doors.”

MIKESCHAIR has experienced a great deal since the release of their debut album. Not only have they toured extensively, they’ve also maintained their heart for missions to work and be involved with the international relief agencies such as Food for the Hungry and Buckner International; organizations that help at risk orphans. The band members have traveled abroad to Haiti with Food for the Hungry and to South & Central America with Buckner International.

Some bands have to tour a long time to get their big break - but just a few weeks into the band's inception, the guys won Belmont University's Music Showcase competition, got signed to CURB Records, played a ton of shows and got themselves nominated at the Dove Awards for Song of The Year (For Let The Waters Rise).

The Name: How did the name "MIKESCHAIR" come about? Well, the rest of the guys lived on a different floor of the dorm - but Mike was the epicenter of the band - so the guys bought Mike a chair to make him feel more at home hanging out of their floor of the dorm. Since college boys don't like sharing, Mike put a sign on the chair reading, "Mike's chair."

Summer vacation is almost over! What can you do to make the next couple of weeks special, before school kicks back up?

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Jaci Velasquez

Jaci Velasquez has been breaking down walls and stereotypes for Christian music since the beginning of her career (and she was only a teenager!). Velasquez, a Houston, Texas native, began traveling and singing with her family when she was 9 years old. At the age of 14, she signed to Myrrh Records. Her first album “Heavenly Place” shot up the charts and garnered Jaci her first Platinum record, earning her the title of “the fastest selling solo debut artist in the history of Christian music.”

The Latin music industry quickly took notice and Sony Discos signed her to a Latin record deal. Jaci began recording both English and Spanish albums simultaneously. “Love Out Loud” was released in 2008 as Jaci’s 13th record and debut release on her self-owned Apostrophe Records. A secretive new project is due out in 2011.

As if being a multi-lingual music super star weren't enough, Jaci has also done some acting in both Christian and foreign language films, modeling, and been a spokeswoman. Plus she and her husband have two preschoolers. Seriously, is there anything she can't do?!

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Shane & Shane

Life is a whirlwind for Shane & Shane. After both settling down, getting married and having three kids between the two families, it looked like their national music careers were over. The Shanes took on worship leading at their home church and had resigned themselves to just being local musicians and family men.

But God had other plans. After a season of growing with their church, experiencing fatherhood and impacting lives of young people through discipleship God began to write songs through Shane & Shane once again. Really good songs. The best songs they had ever written. After sending a demo to some friends in Nashville they immediately got picked up my Fair Trade Records (MercyMe).

It took nearly a year to fully produce The One You Need, but in the end it became a career album. One of immense depth and as Shane E says, one that is all about the Gospel. The album is full of Good News! It's all about Jesus.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Brandon Heath

Since his 2006 debut, Christian music has twice honored Brandon Heath as Male Vocalist of the Year (2009 and 2010 GMA's), he's been nominated for two GRAMMYs, an American Music Award, and holds multiple GMA Dove Awards.

Off stage, Heath seeks opportunities to merge his public platform with his heart for community, regularly working with Young Life, Blood:Water Mission, Restore International and unofficially volunteering for many other human rights agencies on a global scale. Heath also created the annual “Love Your Neighbor” benefit with songwriter Jason Ingram, in partnership with Fellowship Bible Church in Brentwood, Tennessee, for a night of music to raise funds and gather volunteers for a focused need in the Nashville community.

Testimony: When he was just 3 Brandon's parents divorced. Growing up, Brandon was bitter towards his family, but he found comfort in Christ while in high school. At age 16 Brandon was invited to a Christian camp with some friends. He accepted Christ and began to learn about forgiveness.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Lindsay McCaul

Lindsay McCaul is a graduate of Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, a town she now calls her home.  She graduated with a focus in linguistics and translations - hoping to secure a job translating the Bible into other languages.  Born in Abilene, Texas, McCaul moved to Florida when she was nine and lived so close to the Space Center that she remembers hearing the Shuttle rattle her windows when it launched.

Lindsay rememebers sneaking out of bed to turn on her radio and listen to Christian radio late into the night.  She'd sing along, she'd cry and worship each night.  It became her passion.  She started writing songs before she even turned twelve.

Songwriting became the filter through which McCaul explored her relationship with God and expressed what He was revealing to her. She continued to write after she moved to Chicago to attend Moody Bible Institute.  A worship pastor at the school signed her up to lead worship, despite Lindsay's begging to not do it.  She faced her fears and flourished.  Soon she began leading worship at Chicago’s Harvest Bible Chapel, a 14,000-member church.

Her original songs became favorites with the congregation and began to attract notice outside the church. McCaul’s music came to the attention of industry titans Mark Hall, of Casting Crowns, who invited her on tour with the band; and Jason Ingram, who helped produce her album.

Familial Fact: Lindsay has a twin sister.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
NewWorldSon

How do you describe the sound of NewWorldSon?  According to their press release: "The award-winning band's music is a veritable melting pot of gospel, R&B, reggae and jazz fused together with an innate pop sensibility. The result is a combustion of flavor like no other that can only be fully appreciated after seeing the band perform live."

The Canadian quartet has been winning JUNO Awards and GMA Canada Covenant Awards for years.  Wildly popular abroad, we are just now falling in love with them stateside.  The group was featured on newsboys' wildly popular "GO" tour and received invitations to headline festivals in Australia, Germany, Holland and Sweden, quickly extending its international reach.

Joel, Josh, Rich and Mark take their musical artistry very seriously.  But they are adament that the music means nothing without Christ.  They believe that music can make you feel good, but life isn't all happy rainbows and shiny stars.  Salvation is the root of every single one of their songs.
