OFFICIAL CHRISTMAS COUNTDOWN:
25 Days

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir

The Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir (out of the Brooklyn Tabernacle Church) is directed by Carol Cymbala, the wife of Senior Pastor Jim Cymbala and the daughter of the church founder, the late Rev. Clair Hutchins. Although the Choir is composed of vocally untrained church members, it has been used by the Lord to present the love of God all over the world. The 285-voice choir has recorded three videos, three DVDs, and numerous albums, winning six Grammy Awards.

It is a highly unlikely ensemble, a mixture of ethnic and economic backgrounds. The choir is made up of attorneys and street people, nurses and ex-crack addicts, a unique cross section of humanity.

Pastor Cymbala explains: “None of us would have met if it weren’t for Christ. Our backgrounds are just too diverse. But all of us have one thing in common: we have all been lifted up and saved. So the Choir sings—not about a theological position—but about what has happened to them. It’s not a theory; it’s a reality.”

The Choir’s latest album project is entitled "Declare Your Name". Their concert venues in New York City have included Carnegie Hall, Radio City Music Hall, the Paramount Theater, and a sold-out performance at the Madison Square Garden Theater.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Caedmon's Call

Caedmon's Call has been producing eclectic, acoustic driven music for two decades. Cliff Young fronts this family of songwriters that includes Derek Webb, Danielle Young (Cliff's wife), Andy Osenga, Todd Bragg, Garett Buell, Jeff Miller and Josh Moore. Ask any Christian performer who they think is authentic in a world of pop culture glitz and they'll tell you, without skipping a beat, Caedmon's Call.

When Christian music exploded in the 90s - playing sold out arenas and massive mega-churches, Caedmon's Call continued (in spite of their great success) to play coffee shops and bars. They always wanted to be where they felt Jesus would be. Caedmon’s Call has sold over a million units of its 15 records to date but has always been more of a community itself than a band.

Caedmon’s also helped launch or boosted the careers of artists like Bebo Norman, Jill Phillips, Waterdeep, and Andrew Peterson. The band is also a longtime promoter of missional living, through their longtime partnership with Compassion International, and more recently with the Dalit Freedom Network, an organization fighting caste discrimination in India, and the band’s own Share The Well Foundation.

The Newsboys

Part of the Holy Trinity of 90s Christian music (DC Talk, Audio Adrenaline, and The Newsboys) - The Newsboys have been touring the globe for nearly 25 years! The band originated in Australia, but the current line-up features a couple of Americans.

Two years ago long-time frontman Peter Furler announced he was burnt out on the touring life and wanted to spend time with his family, and producing from his home in Nashville. There were tryouts - rumors - and then blowing the mind of everyone who listened to Christian music in the 90s, former DCTalk vocalist Michael Tait became the new lead singer of The Newsboys. This is what is called a SUPER GROUP!

Facts: The Newsboys were formed in 1985 as "The News" in Queensland, Austrailia. There are no original members performing in the band's current line-up.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
MIKESCHAIR

MIKESCHAIR was born out of a dorm room at Nashville's Belmont University. Music could always be heard coming out of Mike Grayson's dorm room, attracting other musicians to volunteer in his jam sessions. Before long, a band had formed!

How did the name "MIKESCHAIR" come about? Well, the rest of the guys lived on a different floor of the dorm - but Mike was the epicenter of the band - so the guys bought Mike a chair to make him feel more at home hanging out of their floor of the dorm. Since college boys don't like sharing, Mike put a sign on the chair reading, "Mike's chair."

Though they love music, each member of MIKESCHAIR admits it’s about so much more. “We all really have this desire to be involved in ministry,” Hale says. “We are obviously all really passionate about music, but we always want it to be about something more. We saw that we all had the same heart for this and then God just kept opening doors.”

MIKESCHAIR has experienced a great deal since the release of their debut album. Not only have they toured extensively, they’ve also maintained their heart for missions to work and be involved with the international relief agencies such as Food for the Hungry and Buckner International; organizations that help at risk orphans. The band members have traveled abroad to Haiti with Food for the Hungry and to South & Central America with Buckner International.

Some bands have to tour a long time to get their big break - but just a few weeks into the band's inception, the guys won Belmont University's Music Showcase competition, got signed to CURB Records, played a ton of shows and got themselves nominated at the Dove Awards for Song of The Year (For Let The Waters Rise).

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Rachel Lampa

Rachel Lampa was born in Ann Arbor, MI and grew up in a tightly knit family just outside of Boulder, CO. As a family, they clung to Christ through hard times, including job losses and divorce. Through the hard times, God used Rachel's voice to inspire and bring healing. And it was her voice that landed her a Word Recording contract at the age of 14.

The next 8 years of Rachel's life were filled with recording, touring, promoting - a crazy travel schedule that stretched right through adolescence. Some of her adventures included an appearance on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The View, ET, CNN, the privilege of recording at Abbey Road Studios in London, and a performance for the Pope in Rome in 2000.

After a few years of rest and searching, Rachel Lampa got married, started writing music again, moved to Nashville and has a new album (All We Need) out now!

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Lincoln Brewster

Born and raised in a small town in Alaska, Brewster’s childhood was spent in a broken home. It was an environment darkened by his stepfather’s violent behavior and alcohol addiction. An environment from which Brewster and his mother sought solace in music.

As Brewster bonded with his mom through music, he began mastering a variety of instruments —including a stunning prowess on the guitar. It was this incredible talent that caught the attention of mainstream labels, landed Brewster a “gig” playing with rocker Steve Perry and earned him a mainstream record contract by age 19.

But God had other plans. After attending church with his high school sweetheart and now wife, Laura, Brewster yielded his life to Christ. Filled with a new passion and purpose, Brewster walked away from the promise of rock stardom to take a job at his
local church. This new trajectory eventually led him to a recording partnership with praise and worship label Integrity Music.

Lincoln's latest album is called Real Life. At its core, the album is about Grace. “My wife and I have been married for 16 years,” Brewster says. “My family is the biggest deal for me. I didn’t have strong male role models in my life as a kid. But God’s given me the courage to not let my past control my future… He’s given me the chance to be the father I never had and the husband I never saw modeled.”

Chris Tomlin

"How Great Is Our God", "Jesus Messiah", "Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone)", and the recent song "Our God." All written by Chris Tomlin. In fact, he is currently the most sung worship song writer in America.

Originally from East Texas, Chris Tomlin grew up enjoying country music and playing the acoustic guitar with his dad. Tomlin wrote his first song at the age of 14 and always sensed that God would use him best through music. He graduated college with a degree in Psychology, but began hanging out with pastor Louie Giglio. The two would go on to create the Passion conference in 1997.

It's been a big year for the Tomlin family. Chris and his wife Lauren welcomed their first child, daughter Ashlyn Alexandra Tomlin, back in September. Plus Tomlin was named "Top Christian Artist" and "Our God" was honored for "Top Christian Song" at the Billboard Music Awards this past May.

Rita Springer has recorded over half a dozen albums and toured the world, sharing her music and her heart with anyone who will listen. Her powerful vocals, unabashed lyrics, and philosophy of complete and utter openness before God have made her stand out in the worship community. Rita's live albums capture her passion for unscripted, spontaneous worship.

"My heart has always been to see people come into a perspective of worship that leads them to lifestyle membership and true ownership in Jesus. I have learned that He truly is the Best Friend, Father, Savior, and Lover of my soul," Rita shares.

After years of sensing God was calling her to step up her responsibilities in mentoring the next generation of women in the worship arts, Rita Springer started Dive - a mentoring conference that focuses on small groups of women.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Heather Williams

Heather Williams grew up in extreme poverty with her mom and stepfather. Throughout her early childhood, she suffered intense abuse and was even chained to a tree for punishment in one instance. Her mother gave her away at age 11, and Williams went to live with her grandfather in Michigan. Living with little guidance and the pain of past abuse and rejection, Williams turned to drugs and alcohol as a way to numb the realities of life. As things began to spiral out of control, the young teenager began to have thoughts of suicide and was even homeless at one point.

At age 18, however, the dangerous road Williams was on took a U-turn when she briefly reconnected with her birth father. Her father, a Christian, invited Williams to church.

“I came to this place where it was either, OK, I’m going to give my life to God, or I just don’t know if I’m going to live. So, I walked up that aisle at that church, and I gave my life to God.”

Having grown up with a love of music, after becoming a Christian, Williams says she began to write songs from a perspective of radical change. But then another wave of tragedy struck the budding singer/songwriter when her first child passed away shortly after he was born. But this incredible tragedy only drew Heather closer to God.

For Williams, she describes her songs as “conversations,” sometimes joyful, sometimes angry, sometimes a mix of both. Today, Williams is grateful for how far grace has brought her. She and her husband, a full-time youth pastor, live in Florida with their two young children.

Now Mark and his family reside in North Carolina.

With numerous chart toppers, Dove Awards, and album sales - Schultz has become a staple on Christian radio around the world. Chris August

While he may be considered a "new" artist, Fervent Records' newly signed singer-songwriter Chris August is anything but a rookie in the music industry. The self-taught pianist, guitarist, and producer previously toured as the keyboard player and opening act for pop sensation Ashlee Simpson before shifting his focus to his solo career. Chris, a native of Dallas, Texas, put his refined skill set to work when he co-produced his debut record with acclaimed producer Ed Cash.

While he is not one to shy away from writing about his faith, Chris isn't afraid to embrace relationships and heartache in his songwriting. Chris cites influences such as Stevie Wonder, John Mayer, and Gavin DeGraw who all contributed to the polished pop/rock sound that is sure to resonate with all who listen.

Building 429

Jason Roy formed Building 429 to reach others with a story similar to his. He faced a hard childhood and found freedom and relief in the local church. The band's name comes from Ephesians 4:29 "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen."

About the new album Listen to the Sound:

“It really is the overflow of the life that we’ve lived over the last two or three years, especially this past year,” says lead vocalist Jason Roy. “I’m a worship pastor now and that has been a huge part of the lyrical content of this record. It’s about the lives that I’ve been involved with. This really does come from a much more honest place.”
