ARTIST OF THE DAY
The Afters

After losing their longtime friend and manager to a two-year battle with pancreatic cancer, two band members deciding to part ways, a nearly life-threatening car wreck and a new member losing a close friend one week after joining the band, it has been a hard season of change for The Afters. Holding on to their faith and their passion for making music, has kept the band focused throughout the mess of it all.

The changes in line-up and the constant evolution of sound created a fresh sound for the new album. Sonically, Light Up the Sky is somewhat of a departure from the grunge rock of the band’s debut. Instead, this collection of songs tends to lean more pop.

The Afters have seen a quick rise to success, forming in 2007 when Josh and Matt met while both working at their local Starbucks in Mesquite, TX. The band formed under the name Blisse, but thankfully they changed it before debuting with their first album Never Going Back To OK.

The Afters are:
Founding member Josh Havens (lead vocals/keys/guitars)
Founding member Matt Fuqua (vocals/guitars)
New member Dan Ostebo (bass)
New member Jordan Mohilowski (drums)

This Memorial Day we honor those who have given their lives for our freedom. We also honor the families who have lost loved ones. Thank you for your sacrifice. Thank you for your service.

ARTIST OF THE D

Ginny Owens

Ginny Owens is a three-time Dove Award winner, including the Gospel Music Association’s 2000 New Artist of the Year recipient, and multiple ASCAP Award winner. She has sold nearly one million albums and has topped the charts with several hit songs including If you Want Me To and I Wanna Be Moved. Her music has been featured on television shows and her concerts have impacted the lives of tens of thousands.

And Ginny Owens is blind. That has never stopped her from chasing musical perfection, though. When she sits behind a piano, music flows from her soul and the lyrics ring of Truth. Sometimes that Truth is learned through heartache - sometimes through Joy. She's just like everybody else, except she takes our collective life experiences and turns them into art.

After taking a break from the recording industry, this past March Ginny signed a new record contract with Soul Stride/EMI. So hopefully by Christmas we'll have some brand new Ginny Owens music to enjoy!

Today begins the epic 3-day weekend launch of Summer. I for one will be firing up the grill!

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Switchfoot

I grew up listening to Switchfoot. The San Diego band debuted in the Mid-90s with Legend of Chin and their hit song Chem 6-A immediately became an anthem for my youth group. Riding the tide of a growing Christian rock scene, Switchfoot continued to release amazing albums and they got noticed by big wigs in the music industry.

Two songs from their album Learning To Breathe were picked up for the soundtrack of the hit movie A Walk To Remember. In fact, Mandy Moore who stars in the movie, performed the Switchfoot song Only Hope. (Which my wife and I used in our wedding)

The name "Switchfoot" is a surfing term. Lead singer/songwriter Jon Foreman says "We all love to surf and have been surfing all our lives so to us, the name made sense. To switch your feet means to take a new stance facing the opposite direction. It's about change and movement, a different way of approaching life and music."

Wouldn't you like to be at the beach today? Me too. If you are going, take me along on the radio.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Kristian Stanfill

Kristian Stanfill was like a lot of teenage kids growing up in the suburbs in the 90’s in a fairly typical American home. He went to church, loved music, and even taught himself to play guitar. As soon as the church youth group heard he could play a few chords, he immediately became the so-called “Worship Leader.” He learned songs by DC Talk and Audio Adrenaline, and eventually Passion and Chris Tomlin.

Those kids who needed a worship leader could not have known they had chosen someone called and gifted by God to lead a generation. Someone who would grow not just to teach Passion songs to his youth group, but also to tour with multi-platinum selling artist Chris Tomlin and take the stage at Passion conferences and the Passion World Tour, reaching audiences numbering in the hundreds of thousands.

Stanfill’s past is really a story about an almighty God who calls His people to praise. That call has been unmistakable in Stanfill’s life, even as that 15-year-old growing up in the Atlanta suburb of Marietta, finding the connection between the strings of a guitar and the Maker of music.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Building 429

Building 429 just released their new album Listen To The Sounds. “It really is the overflow of the life that we’ve lived over the last two or three years, especially this past year,” says lead vocalist Jason Roy. “I’m a worship pastor now and that has been a huge part of the lyrical content of this record. It’s about the lives that I’ve been involved with. This really does come from a much more honest place.”

Jason Roy formed Building 429 to reach others with a story similar to his. He faced a hard childhood and found freedom and relief in the local church. The band's name comes from Ephesians 4:29 "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen."

MercyMe

This Greenville, TX band has been cranking out number 1 hits and gold and platinum albums for almost 20 years. In fact, it was 12 years ago that they wrote and recorded a song that transformed Christian music. You might have heard of the tune "I Can Only Imagine."

The group’s name, “MercyMe”, originated during Bart’s time as a youth ministry intern in Florida. Bart’s grandmother would exclaim, “Well mercy me, why don’t you get a real job?”

Little Known Fact: Bart Millard was a footballer in high school until he sustained an injury to his ankle. He took up choir in school as an elective and never stopped singing.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Bethany Dillon

Hard to believe that Bethany Dillon was only 14 when she first graced the Christian music charts. Now, in her 20s she's a veteran, married to Shane Barnard (of Shane & Shane fame) with a toddler in tow.

Her latest album Stop & Listen is titled after the story of Mary and Martha. When Martha griped about Mary not helping in the kitchen, Jesus scolded her - telling her to stop and listen. Think about your prayer time - how much of it is spent listening for God's response?

Fun Fact: Bethany and Shane's daughter is named Lucy but they call her Lone Star Lucy (cause they live in Texas).

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Justin Unger

Formerly a founding member of the group Across The Sky (nominated for New Artist of the Year at the 2003 Dove Awards) - Justin Unger is now a few albums into his solo career. His start began when he won a songwriting competition in Colorado. His victory led to a record deal with Word Records. Justin pounded it out on the road with Across The Sky for a couple of years before God began a new work in his heart.

Called to full time ministry back in AZ, he packed up his family and headed back West. Losing himself in church work was fun for a time, but he yearned to make music. Fortunately for Justin, his church was thrilled to nurture his songwriting passion. Now he is taking it one day at a time with his family (wife and 4 kids) at their church and the occasional regional tour.

Fun Fact: Justin is a worship pastor at The Heights Church in Prescott, AZ. Which is close to his hometown Phoenix.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Barlow Girl

Since releasing their self-titled debut in 2004, sisters Rebecca, Alyssa and Lauren Barlow have continuously inspired fans with intimate portraits through music. The focus is always on sharing what God has placed on their hearts. whether that be through a song on an album, or talking with a group of young fans for hours after a concert.

The girls' dad Vince Barlow is a pastor at Willow Creek Community Church outside of Chicago. Becca, Alyssa and Lauren got their start playing as his backup band for youth events. A lot of their lyrics deal with issues like eating disorders, self-mutilation, abortion, prayer and self-worth.

Fun Fact: Years before Barlow Girl became a band, the group Superchic[k] wrote a song called "Barlow Girl" after meeting the sisters and being impressed by the stance for purity.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Jeremy Camp

Jeremy Camp's latest album is called We Cry Out. “The Lord says in Jeremiah 29:13, ‘You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.’ But we live in such a distracted society; we let the world’s noise divide our focus and our hearts. Our generation is in desperate need of crying out to God.”

For over a decade Jeremy Camp has been ruling the Christian music charts. He debuted back in 2004 shortly after his first wife died of ovarian cancer just five months after they were married. She was 21. The raw reality of a tested faith was evident in every song. Since then, God has blessed Jeremy with a new family, success and opportunities to use his journey to impact lives every day through music.

Jeremy will be hitting the road this Fall for a 30 city tour in Dalton, GA. He will be joined by Francesca Battistelli and Adam Cappa. Will he be near you? Dates coming soon.

So apparently there is a Strawberry Festival happening this weekend in Marion Station. I love me some strawberries. Hope it doesn't rain tomorrow morning so I can go.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Audio Adrenaline

During 15 years together, the members of Audio Adrenaline have more than lived up to their super-charged moniker both on stage and off. Whether inviting an arena full of fans to sing along on such chart topping hits as “Big House” or riding ATVs in the Nevada desert, the guys have—to coin a phrase from bassist Will McGinniss—“sucked every ounce of marrow” from each experience.

The members of the band see Audio Adrenaline as an example of how God can use people who are obedient. “I think that it’s a testimony to any one out there if you are willing to turn your heart and life over to God, that you can do many things,” says lead singer Mark Stuart.

Stuart and McGinniss met at Kentucky Christian College (now Kentucky Christian University). Stuart and his brother David were putting together a rock band and McGinniss struck up a friendship with the pair. Along with David and Barry Blair they launched the band, originally called A-180. The band recorded two independent albums before signing a record contract with ForeFront Records. It was then that they officially launched Audio Adrenaline.

In 2004, AA created the Hands & Feet Project, where the built an orphanage and ministry in Haiti. They still work closely with this project that has met many needs, especially since the tragic earthquake.

Mark Stuart and Will McGinniss more recently found the Know Hope Collective. Know Hope is a community of song writers that work to dig deeper into the question "What is worship?"

Jason Allen Rich

Sometimes it seems like American Idol is a proving ground for new Christian talent. Jason Allen Rich garnered quite a following during his stint on AI and now is pursuing his original and true calling for worship music.

“All of the musical growth is great, and I have worked hard at that”, adds Rich, “but most importantly I want to grow as a follower of Christ. It is essential for God to be our focus, and if I am able to use my gifts to influence others to recognize that, then I believe this is my life’s calling!"

Rich grew up in the heartland of the US in the small town of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He began his musical career as a worship leader and singer, and has since grown into a seasoned musician and writer as well.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Amy Douglas

Amy Douglas has always shared a passion for music and a Love for the Lord. She accepted Christ at age 6, growing up in a small church in the even smaller town of Red Oak, TX. At the age of 17 Amy felt God calling her to ministry but was unsure of direction. She graduated college with a bachelors in music and it was then that God revealed to her a much larger plan. Get A Life Ministry was born when God called Amy and her husband Jared, a member of Team Impact, to full time speaking and Music Ministry in 1997. Since its inception "Get a Life" ministries has taken the Douglas' all over the country visiting and effecting thousands upon thousands of individuals for the body of Christ.

Amy's songs come from a very personal perspective. She writes as a mom, wife and daughter. Much of her music is infused with a sense of patriotism because both her husband and her father served in the United States military. Amy Douglas makes music as a side project, but when she does, we get to enjoy! Learn more about Get A Life Ministry HERE.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Salvador

Salvador is a jam band. More jazz influenced than anything else, they take the stage every night without a set list. They are prayed up and ready to see where the Holy Spirit will take them! The band hails from Texas and brings a country sensibility, with heavy latin influences to their modern praise and worship music. And they are ok with a 10 minute guitar solo smack in the middle of the song!

Front man Nic Gozalez is married to Jaci Valasquez. It's safe to say that Christian music is their lifeblood. For the last couple of albums the guys have brought in some guest songwriters and expanded their creative process. It's been a freeing experience that has led to a more genuine worship experience for the band. And that's what a Salvador concert is all about: worship.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Kerrie Roberts

Kerrie Roberts is a big voice in an itty bitty package. Growing up singing in church, she'd often have to stand on a crate so that people sitting further back than the front row could see where this powerful voice was coming from! Kerrie's dad was a pastor and her mom the choir director for their church. Being front and center in church was bred into her from birth!

Kerrie began writing her first songs in high school, performing one during her own graduation. When the time came for college, Kerrie chose to get her degree in Studio Music and Jazz Vocal Performance at the University of Miami. “Little kids have dreams. For me, it was ‘I’m going to be a singer.’ And I never grew out of it.”

Sure, you can plug away at the church and club scene - playing every show you get offered and working for food and a closet to sleep in. Or you can score a chance to open for Third Day - get noticed by Mac Powell who then moves you from Australia to Atlanta, produces your album and gets you nominated for New Artist of the Year at the GMA's. Option 2 is the route that Australian band Revive took. Smart move, dudes.

Of course that sort of change can be daunting. In fact, after the initial success with their debut album, original guitarist Tyler Hall, never truly able to ease the discomfort from leaving his homeland, decided to move back to Australia with his wife. Hanbury, Tenkate and bass player Rich Thompson continued working on Blink—even before they found Hall’s replacement—and slightly altered the band’s musical core in the process.

Another big break for this up and coming band - ABC's Secret Millionaire recently featured their hit song "Something Glorious!"
