Today David Wilson is cruisin' on The Joy Ride!

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Natalie Grant

Natalie Grant is an award winning singer and songwriter. She won four consecutive Female Vocalist of the Year Awards (2006-2009) at the Dove's and is never far from the top of the charts.  In fact, her latest single Hurricane became the #1 most added song to Christian radio in its first week of release!

Born in Seattle, she currently lives in Nashville with her Canadian music producer husband, Bernie Herms, and their three daughters which includes a set of twins.

Beyond her artistry, Natalie Grant is an advocate for victims of human trafficking. Abolition International, which Grant founded in 2005 under the name The Home Foundation, has raised over a quarter of a million dollars to fight the trafficking of women and children for the purpose of sexual exploitation.

Natalie is also singing and speaking as a part of the Dare To Be Revolution conferences for women.

About Hurricane: "Feeling battered by the waves of your circumstances? God is reaching for you," Natalie says."God knows exactly where you were an hour ago, where you’ll be tomorrow, and where you are now. You are not alone."

Smile - the weekend is here!

ARTIST OF THE DAY
One Sonic Society

One Sonic Society is a Christian Contemporary-Praise & Worship collective of Christian musicians from around the globe. That collective is composed of noted songwriter Jason Ingram on vocals, guitar and piano, noted Delirious lead guitarist Stuart Garrard on guitar and vocals, Hillsong UNITED drummer Paul Mabury on drums and programming, and Jonathan Thatcher  from Delirious on bass and synths.

The band was formed in 2009 at the end of Delirous.  Stu G sought out Christian artists to work with in Nashville and connected wiht Ingram.  By definition, One Sonic Society is the epitomy of a Praise & Worship Superband!

The "One" aspect of their name came from the vision of the four of members being together in unity.  "Sonic" being sound and wanting to keep creating and pushing forward.  The "Society" is a refelction of their ideal - to create community amongst musicians and worshippers.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
The Afters

When The Afters broke out onto the scene, it didn't seem like anything could stop them.  Their music was fun, their attitudes were joyful and nothing could slow them down!

But life's circumstances quickly changed everything. After losing their longtime friend and manager to a two-year battle with pancreatic cancer, two band members decided to part ways with the band, and then there was a life-threatening car wreck, followed by a new member of the band losing a close friend just one week after joining the group.

It was a rough season of change for The Afters. Holding on to their faith and their passion for making music has kept the band focused throughout the mess of it all.  Through the pain, faith grew in abundance and that is definitely the message behind their sophomore album, Light Up The Sky and the more recent Life Is Beautiful.

Ancient History: The four original members of The Afters met while working at a Starbucks together.  The band's original name was Screaming Mimes - then they changed it to Blisse.  Thankfully a producer talked them into the The Afters.

TV: The Afters' music has been featured on television shows and promos for shows on almost every major network and various cable shows as well - including Grey's Anatomy, Rachel Ray, Dr. Phil, The Biggest Loser, Army Wives, You Deserve It, October Baby, So You Think You Can Dance, Americas Got Talent, The Hills, The Vineyard and more!

Hump Dayyee!

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Ashes Remain

Ashes Remain’s Josh Smith and Ryan Nalepa (guitar/keys) met one summer leading worship at a youth camp located in rural Maryland - not too far from Gettysburg, PA.  Over the course of that summer, Smith and Nalepa had a feeling that God was calling them to walk down similar paths. Desiring to be obedient to God’s will, Smith and Nalepa committed to pray together each day throughout the summer, asking God that if He wanted them to form a band to make His will known to them.

Months later, Smith, back in Florida, received a phone call from a church in Maryland inviting him to lead worship full time.  It just so happened that the church was ten minutes down the road from Nalepa.

The band's Fair Trade Services debut What I've Become was written mostly for teenagers, from the perspective of what it is like to feel as if there is no hope, where you are your own worst enemy and ultimately what it looks like to go from that very real and dark place to one where there is hope and step into the light.

That journey from dark to light isn't always a swift one and sometimes has to be walked many times, but it is a journey that the band is familiar with and feels called to go on with their fans.

As lead vocalist Josh Smith puts it, “We’re just broken people who need Jesus.”

Sounds Like: Ashes Remain sounds like early Kutless, a smidgen of Pillar with a dash of Skillet. Hard-hitting rock with a heart for worship.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Big Daddy Weave

Mike Weaver is a big guy, hence the name Big Daddy Weave! Simple, funny, slightly self depreciating - and yet once you get past the fun of simply saying "Big Daddy Weave!" you find a worship band that is sincere in there desire to lead others to throne of God.

Formed at the University of Mobile, the quintet—Mike Weaver, Jay Weaver, Joe Shirk, Jeremy Redmon and Jeff Jones—has earned a reputation both for the musical conviction that has carried their songs to the top of the charts and for the joy and passion that have made their live performances such moving and memorable experiences.

The band's latest album Love Come To Life took three years to make. And the band literally went through the fire while writing and recording the project.  A devastating fire swept through guitarist/producer Jeremy Redmon's house and studio halfway through the recording process.  That along with health issues, exhaustion and a number of other trials have served to deepen the faith of this band of brothers (technically Mike and Jay are actual brothers).

Are you ready?!
Let's DO THIS!

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Nichole Nordeman

Back in 1998, Nichole Nordeman's album Wide Eyed burst onto the scene with a sincerity and even a desparation that hadn't been heard in a while. Songs like To Know You and Who You Are were so unafraid to tackle doubt that the album ushered in a new era of songwriting in Christian music - paving the way for Sara Groves, David Crowder, Jason Gray and others.

15 years and 9 Dove Awards later - Nichole's voice is still a recognizable meloncholy that grabs your attention. Though it has been several years since she's recorded a full length album, Nichole Nordeman has been busy song writing with and for other artists, including Bethany Dillon and Amy Grant. She wrote and recorded music for Music Inspired By the Chronicles of Narnia and VeggieTales' Sweetpea Beauty.

Her biggest accomplishment in the last several years was writing/co-writing the entire double disc album Music Inspired by The Story.  This collection features 18 songs written from the first person perspective of Bible characters.  It features the voices of the biggest names in Christian music (MercyMe, Casting Crowns, Natalie Grant, Amy Grant, Chris Tomlin, Brandon Heath and many more) - but Nichole actually wrote the entire project!

Nicole most recently lent her voice to a new recording of Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus which is featured on a modern hymns collection called Jesus, Firm Foundation.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Plumb

Tiffany Arbuckle Lee is the voice and face of the Christian band Plumb. Off and on, Plumb has been making amazing music that is never quite what the standard of the day happens to be. Call it being "before their time" or retro or inventive - Plumb pulls heartstrings with deep, passionate lyrics and sonically takes listeners to a place they can't get to through any other artist.

Tiffany Lee grew up in Fayetteville, GA and started her career as a backup singer. Her career is in its second decade and her music has been featured on six feature films (including Bruce Almighty) and many other television shows (mostly on the CW). As a busy mom, Plumb doesn't have many concerts, but this year she did FINALLY release a new album!

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Brad & Rebekah

Husband and wife worship leaders, Brad & Rebekah have been leading worship together since 2003.  They met while both attending North Central University in Minneapolis, MN.  Brad’s all boy worship team wanted to play a song that required a female lead… Rebekah walked by the dinner table at that moment and the consensus was unanimous that Rebekah should would be perfect.  Of course it was also the beginning of the end for Brad's band...

Shortly after graduating Brad & Rebekah married in July of 2006 and took a full-time worship position in Elkhart IN.  After opening for Natalie Grant, who played a concert at their church, the duo felt like God was calling them to pursue full time music.  So they stepped out in faith and the Lord has led them through this journey ever since.

Abroad: Brad & Rebekah have been privileged to travel abroad to lead worship and teach alongside some great international ministries and missionaries in the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Uganda and Guyana.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Justin Unger

Justin was raised in a Christian home in Phoenix, AZ. He says that it was in 8th Grade when he really made his faith in Christ his own. Middle School is usually a time when we search for our identity - and Justin found his identity solely in Jesus Christ. It was in the summer after 8th grade that Justin wrote his first song titled To Know You Love Me with his grandfather.

After winning a songwriting competition in Colorado in 2000, Justin moved to Nashville (still in high school) to nail down a recording contract with Atlantic Records. He joined the group Across The Sky and began touring - opening for Mark Schultz, Avalon, Downhere and many others. Two years of touring passed quickly. Justin got married and he and his wife welcomed their first child, Carson.

The Unger family then headed to Prescott, AZ where Justin became the worship leader at The Heights Church. Flash forward to today - Justin is still leading worship and recording and touring on the side. Now his family is four kids strong and life is full!

Justin Unger wants to create - just like the Creator - "..as a songwriter I believe that each new melody and lyric is nothing shy of a miracle, and even a gift from the Chief Creator Himself."

Let's DO THIS!

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Leeland

This GRAMMY and multi-Dove award nominated band from Baytown, TX is known for powerful songwriting. Their music is anthemic, with lyrics that show uncommon depth and discernment.

Lead singer Leeland Mooring, his older brother Jack, younger sister Shelly, along with drummer Mike Smith make up what has become truly a family band.  Their latest album digs deeper into theology and belief.  The Great Awakening was inspired primarily by Jonathan Edwards and William Booth - both historical "fathers of the faith."

When Leeland’s not on the road, band members continue to lead worship at the Baytown, Texas church pastored by the Mooring’s parents. The band also serves regularly in their community’s Gulf Coast emergency preparedness programs and at a local food pantry which feeds hundreds of people each week.

Family Ties: Jack Mooring is married to Michael W. Smith's daughter Whitney.  That means that Jack's two kids call Michael W. Smith "Grandfather." Let that sink in.

Big Tent Revival

Few bands in any genre can claim a Grammy nomination for every album they have recorded. Big Tent is one such band.  But in 2000 the guys needed a break from the road and decided to go on a sort of Big Tent Revival sabbatical.

They took on other jobs, some working as song writers, others as worship pastors and non-profit runners.  But then, after a lengthy break - they got the band back together!  Using Kickstarter, BTR financed a new album and are now back on the road.

This day is held in the Father's hands.
As He reminds us over and over and over again in His Word:
Fear not.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Josh Wilson

Josh Wilson grew up the son of a preacher in Lubbock, Texas. His debut album Trying to Fit the Ocean in a Cup became one of 2008's biggest success stories. The album was called “the future of Christian pop." and his songs Savior Please and Before the Morning rocked Christian radio coast to coast. In 2012, Josh Wilson released See You and a Christmas album called Noel - both of which have garnered him awards and accolades, along with radio hits.

About Carry Me: In the midst of writing songs for his fourth studio release, Carry Me, Josh Wilson began experiencing severe chest and shoulder pain as well as difficulty breathing.  He thought he was having a heart attack! Yet after numerous negative tests, he tried to get back to his normal life but soon began waking up frantic in the middle of the night, even canceling scheduled performances out of fear. Reconciling these unexpected emotions with his long held beliefs defines Wilson’s intentionally joyful and honestly raw new record.

Skillz: Josh is quite the accomplished musician, playing 20 instruments on his latest record, including, ukulele, hammered dulcimer, and the glockenspiel!

A new weekend is here!

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Chris August

Chris Augut is a native of Dallas, Texas, and is a veteran of the music industry, even if Christian audiences are just now getting to know him.  Before releasing his Christian debut in 2010, he toured as a keyboardist for Ashlee Simpson and other mainstream artists.

Mad Skillz: Chris is a self-taught pianist, guitarist, and producer.

While he is not one to shy away from writing about his faith, Chris isn't afraid to embrace relationships and heartache in his songwriting. Chris cites influences such as Stevie Wonder, John Mayer, and Gavin DeGraw who all contributed to the polished pop/rock sound that is sure to resonate with all who listen.

His latest album The Upside of Down is more focussed on faith than any previous projects.  Shortly before finishing the project, Chris was in a severe skateboarding accident that nearly killed him.  When he woke up in a hospital, Chris was struck by how quickly life can be taken away and that fuels his passion now, more than ever.

Summer: Chris posted a note about his summer on his website, saying the best part of a fantastic summer was getting to spend more Sundays at his home church in Nashville.  A reminder to GET PLUGGED IN!

Awards: In 2011, Christ scored 3 Dove Awards: New Artist OTY, Male Vocalist OTY & Pop/Contemporary Recorded Album OTY.

Name Game: August is actually Chris' middle name.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Mandisa

Mandisa was a fan favorite on Season 5 of American Idol, going to the final rounds despite dealing with some harsh words from the judges about her weight. She has discussed at length in her book Idol Eyes: My New Perspective on Faith, Fat & Fame, that those hurtful words cut deeply, causing a lot of pain and embarrassment.

Now with three GRAMMY Award nominations under her belt, and four full albums breaking the charts in Christian music - Mandisa is showing the world that Christians are real people - with real problems but who have a REAL Savior.

Her Struggle: On the whole weight thing - Mandisa has lost over 100 pounds through diet and exercise!

“A struggle is a struggle, and Jesus is there through it all. He is there in compassion and grace. I have found that what He has spoken to me through these songs has been encouraging and I think that’ll be true for other people who are going through their own hard times,” - Mandisa

When Christian music exploded in the 90s - playing sold out arenas and massive mega-churches, Caedmon's Call continued (in spite of their great success) to play coffee shops and bars. They always wanted to be where they felt Jesus would be.

Sell-Out: Caedmon’s Call has sold over a million units of their 16 records to date!

Currently CC is taking a break - something they do periodically to actually live life.  But they always come back together...

Caedmon’s helped launch or boost the careers of artists including Bebo Norman, Jill Phillips, Waterdeep, and Andrew Peterson. The band is also a longtime promoter of missional living, through their longtime partnership with Compassion International, and more recently with the Dalit Freedom Network, an organization fighting caste discrimination in India; plus the band’s own Share The Well Foundation.

Birth: The band formed around an acoustic guitar in Cliff Young's dorm room while they were all still in college. Although Cliff and Danielle had been song writing together while dating in high school.

Fashion: Danielle Young often wears overalls in concert, which the rest of the band now refer to as Danielles.

Alumni: CC-member Derek Webb just put out a new album!

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Amy Grant

Amy Grant was the first Contemporary Christian artist to have a platinum record, the first to hit #1 on the pop charts and the first to perform at the Grammys.  And while much was made of her making secular albums, her testimony opened the door for people to share their faith in the broader music market.

Born in Augusta, Georgia in 1960 during the residency of her doctor father, Grant was still a baby when her family (she’s the youngest of four daughters) moved back to its native Nashville.  She had been singing in church and school for years and a friend, producer Brown Bannister, allowed her to use the studio she interned at to duplicate a tape of her original songs that she wanted to give to her family. A Word Records producer heard the tape and played it over the phone for company executives - and she was immediately given a recording contract at the ripe old age of 15.

Back in the mid-80s, Amy Grant SHOCKED the Christian community by taking her act to the secular music market. It wasn't the first time that a beloved Christian artist went mainstream, but it deeply affected people at the time. You might remember the song Baby, Baby - Back then, that was tantamount to sacrilege. Now, it's muzak in elevators.

She branched out to country music as well. The past decade, Amy Grant has been back to making amazing Christian records - often with a country flair - and frequently partnering with her husband, country legend Vince Gill.

By The Numbers:
Over 30 million albums sold worldwide
1 Quintuple Platinum album
1 Triple Platinum
1 Double Platinum album
4 Platinum and
6 Gold albums

Random Tidbit: Amy Grant's 80's background vocalist and keyboard player was Michael W. Smith!  Of course that was until Go West, Young Man launched his career...

A Star: In 2006 Amy Grant was given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
JAVEN

Javen has been a worship leader for a mega-church, a television show host, an actor on stage and screen and an award winning Gospel recording artist.  That's quite the balancing act!

Near and dear to Javen’s heart is supporting missions across the world. He is a spokesperson for World Vision, a Christian humanitarian organization dedicated to working with children, families, and their communities worldwide tackling the causes of poverty and injustice; a consistent donor and supporter of Hope for Haiti, an incredible missions program that houses, feeds, educates and trains over 300 children in Haiti; and participates in several domestic mission programs that deal with homelessness, hunger, and poverty in the Los Angeles, CA area.

Javen recently launched the Worship in the Now Series, a powerful two-day seminar on music, worship, songwriting, life lessons, and more.
