First off - I must wish my beautiful wife a very happy birthday!  You are magnificent Elena.

And now - on to business...

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Switchfoot

"Switchfoot" is a surfing term. Lead singer/songwriter Jon Foreman says "We all love to surf and have been surfing all our lives so to us, the name made sense. To switch your feet means to take a new stance facing the opposite direction. It's about change and movement, a different way of approaching life and music."

I grew up listening to Switchfoot. The San Diego band debuted in the Mid-90s with Legend of Chin and their hit song Chem 6-A immediately became an anthem for my youth group. Mandy Moore performed the Switchfoot song Only Hope for the movie Walk To Remember, Which my wife and I used in our wedding.

Switchfoot has carefully walked the line of being Christians who found success in the secular market, but uncomfortable with the way big record labels work, the band decided to walk away from a multi-album deal - comfort and stability - to become one of the most successful independent bands in the music industry. They live with their families in San Diego, produce on their terms and organize their own world tours.

Today was Joelle's last day on Joy In The Morning.  We will miss you, Joelle.  God bless and Godspeed.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
DecembeRadio

This 4-member Virginia based rock-worship band loves touring, loves recording - they just love bringing music to fans and to play for their God.  And they've seen a lot of quick success.  In 2006, their debut album was nominated for a GRAMMY and earned the group four Dove Award nominations, including nods in the Best New Artist category and Song of the Year for "Drifter." That night the band claimed their first Dove Award when DecembeRadio was honored for Rock Album of the Year!

DecembeRadio puts a lot of time and effort into their live performances.  They toured relentlessly the past several years, including opening for Third Day on their spring tour. The band has an intriguing dynamic on stage. Though they definitely have that powerful rock 'n roll stage presence, they also have a unique ability to be accessible to the fans. There's a bond that's forged between the guys and the crowd that erases that unseen barrier between artist and audience.

When asked about the future - the band responds "..we're just enjoying the journey."

Kids: Between the four members' families, the band now has three daughters.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Mandisa

Mandisa was a fan favorite on Season 5 of American Idol, going to the final rounds despite dealing with some harsh words from the judges about her weight. She has discussed at length in her book Idol Eyes: My New Perspective on Faith, Fat & Fame, that those hurtful words cut deeply, causing a lot of immediate pain and embarrassment.

Mandisa has seen tremendous success on Christian radio. She brings the funk, the pop, and some flavor! And she cut out a lot of flavor too. In her diet. Mandisa has lost over 75 pounds in between freshman and sophomore albums!

Sales: Mandisa's album Freedom was the first female debut to hit No. 1 in the 27-year history of Billboard’s Christian Retail Chart.

The Rounds: Mandisa has made appearances on “TODAY,” “Live with Regis & Kelly,” “CBS Early Show,” “Fox & Friends,” “Extra,” “TV Guide Channel,” “E! News Radio” “Huckabee” and “Associated Press TV.”

Rush of Fools

Rush of Fools hails from Birmingham, AL. They had only played for a short time before entering a contest called "Band with a Mission". Winning the contest, they received attention from record labels, including Midas Records, with whom Rush of Fools soon recorded and released their self-titled debut album.

Burstin onto the Christian music scene in 2007 with the mega-hit “Undo,” and multiple other radio successes, Rush Of Fools earned ASCAP Song of the Year honors and garnered four Dove Award nominations. Their trials came with the folding of their record label and a subsequent legal process. Now with a new label, Rush Of Fools returns sounding more hopeful than ever.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Mark Schultz

Mark Schultz was born and grew up in Colby, Kansas and graduated with a marketing degree from KSU. He then moved to Nashville, TN to put his marketing degree to ... no use whatsoever. He became a youth pastor at First Presbyterian Church in Nashville for eight years. Now Mark and his family reside in North Carolina.

With numerous chart toppers, Dove Awards, and album sales - Schultz has become a staple on Christian radio around the world. He's toured with other big-names and invited some of them to co-write with him on his latest album "Come Alive." Matthew West, Bart Millard, and Joy Williams all pitched in to make his 5th studio release something special.

Ouch: A couple of years ago, Mark biked across the US as a fundraiser for The James Fund, which provides for Mexican orphanages. He traveled over 3000 miles on a bicycle.

Diaspora: Continuing the trend of leaving Nashville, Mark and his family reside in North Carolina.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
David Crowder* Band

DC*B was born out of a need for an authentic worship experience at Baylor University. David Crowder and Chris Seay founded University Baptist Church in 1995 - while still in school. The church grew - and so did the worship team. Crowder began writing songs to incorporate into the worship times at the church and eventually the church released an independent CD, Pour Over Me.

After appearances at summer festivals and regional events, Sparrow Records signed the band who would go on to be a leader in the Passion movement and challenge what worship music could be. At a time when many worship artists were sticking to the G,C,D acoustic chord progression, David Crowder Band delved into bluegrass, folk, alternative, and worship, woven together with a touch of electronic ambience.

After the HUGE success of Illuminate, the band released an electronica EP called Sunsets & Sushi, putting a new spin on their hit worship songs. And with A Collsion, the band released B Collision, featuring bluegrass and country remakes of their latest hits.

The End is nigh: With the release of their 6th full length album coming in January, DC*B will officially end. Ending at the height of popularity and musical contribution. It's been an incredible 12 years though. The band's final show will be at the Passion 2012 conference in Atlanta, GA on the second of January. (You can preorder Give us Rest or (A Requiem Mass in C [The Happiest of All Keys]) now!)

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Jason Gray

Jason Gray is a guy who grew up as a chronic stutterer in an abusive home. A guy whose life was radically changed by the love of Christ. A guy who writes songs with such honesty that you might feel like yelling "Amen" or cry softly to yourself.

Jason's approach to songwriting: "To the dismay of some people I operate with pretty much full-disclosure. If I'm struggling with something, you're probably going to hear about it whether you want to or not. Perfect people don't need grace, only broken people do."

Jason's ongoing work on behalf of AIDS orphans as a World Vision artist has for years been a vital, shaping influence in his life and his art, affording him the opportunity to travel to impoverished areas of Africa, and bringing him recognition as one of "Ten Outstanding Minnesotans."

ARTIST OF THE DAY
NewSong

When Eddie Carswell and Billy Goodwin, who continue to lead the evolving group, started out in 1981 at Morningside Baptist Church in Valdosta, Georgia, neither of them imagined NewSong would repeatedly outdo itself for so many years. 20 #1 Christian radio hits - Dove Awards and nominations - GRAMMY nominations - They guys are headed into their fourth decade of music and just keep getting better!

Most bands that remember the hay-day of the music industry have a hard time embracing the new world order; a world where people download singles, don't always buy full albums and expect something spectacular at a concert or they'll just watch video footage posted on YouTube. But Newsong embraced the change - leading the charge amongst Christian groups by frequently offering free downloads and founding the WinterJam tour - which has featured a full festival line-up of the best Christian music has to offer - all for around $5 a head!

A few years ago, NewSong wrote a song that will bankroll the group for as long as they want to keep making music. The Christmas Shoes took off on Christmas stations across the country and was even turned into a TV movie for CBS.

Michael W Smith

Michael Whitaker Smith was born October 7, 1957 to Paul and Barbara Smith in Kenova, West Virginia. Michael was a typical boy – active in baseball, his family’s church activities, and playing piano. He wrote his first song at age 5 - but as a child, he longed to be a professional baseball player!

In 1982, Michael was asked to play keyboards in a band that was backing up young artist Amy Grant. Michael toured and wrote with Amy for years before launching his own solo career. In 1989 his song Go West Young Man began what would become one of the most legendary careers in Christian music.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Lenny LeBlanc

It was nearly impossible to turn on the radio in the late 70’s without hearing Lenny LeBlanc’s hit ballad, “Falling.” He was an integral part of the phenomenon that became know as Muscle Shoals Music. A self-taught musician, Lenny describes his childhood as “somewhere between dirt poor and middle class.” His first real experience with music came with the discovery of an old upright piano in his aunt’s dark basement.

LeBlanc's talent took him from a middle-school garage band to working in studios with The Temptations, Hank Williams Jr., Roy Orbison, the Supremes, and more. In 1977 a friend who had returned from serving in Vietnam had found Christ and shared Jesus with Lenny. The friend gave Lenny a Bible and he began to read.

"I didn’t know how to talk to God, but I started asking Him if He was real; and He started revealing himself to me."

After finding Christ, Leblanc's career came to a screeching hault. He lost nearly everything except his house. He did skilled carpentry work to earn a modest living and along the way began building and designing handmade furniture. He loved his church, but found the music to be stale, so he started writing music again - only this time for Christ.

Now, three decades later, we still sing songs written by Lenny Leblanc in church. Above All and There Is None Like You are some of his more popular worship songs. He currently lives in Florence, Alabama with his wife Sherrie and daughter Hanna. Lenny continues to write pop and country songs and still travels nationally and internationally as a Christian artist and serves as worship leader at Faith Church in Florence, Alabama.

Factoid:
Lenny Leblanc also continues his work as a carpenter.

Todd Agnew

Todd's life changes dramatically in 2010 when he got married and became a step-dad to two children! To go from a single, touring worship leader/speaker to a married dad with a mortgage has had a humbling impact in his life - and left his heart wide open for a sense of grace that he had never imagined.

“I’ve always been kind of the hammer – walk in, speak the truth, blow up the town, walk off and let all the pastors apply that truth or pick up the pieces. Now I’m having very similar things in my marriage and in my life, where I’m definitely someone who sees the truth that needs to be spoken, but I’m watching my wife who always see the love that needs to be shared.”

The hit song "Joy Unspeakable" is about the incredibly blessing of his new married life - but also that when hard times hit, real Joy isn't subjected to circumstances - but always remains in Christ.

Wayne Watson has a Grammy and multiple Dove Awards, chronicling an awesome career beginning with his debut release Workin' in the Final Hour back in 1980! Some of his songs have become CCM classics, including Another Time, Another Place, For Such a Time as This, and Watercolor Ponies.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Downhere

"We live in an age when the most basic assumptions of orthodox Christianity are being challenged. As a younger band we wrote a lot of songs aimed at pointing out problems and tearing down things that we believed were wrong. But now, at this stage in life, we’re much more interested in going back to the beginning, and using our gifts to reaffirm and shore up the foundations of the faith. We want to be a part of building up the church and preserving the culture."

Downhere is actually from up there - Canada. Jason and Marc - co-lead singers of Downhere - met in college and have been laughing, writing and playing music together for over a decade. It's that friendship and sense of calling that keeps Downhere plugging away, even though the past decade has been anything but kind to the recording industry.

The band has been nominated for dozens of Dove Awards, Juno Awards, Covenant Awards and more.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Chris August

While he may be considered a "new" artist, Fervent Records' newly signed singer-songwriter Chris August is anything but a rookie in the music industry. The self-taught pianist, guitarist, and producer previously toured as the keyboard player and opening act for pop sensation Ashlee Simpson before shifting his focus to his solo career. Chris, a native of Dallas, Texas, put his refined skill set to work when he co-produced his debut record with acclaimed producer Ed Cash.

While he is not one to shy away from writing about his faith, Chris isn't afraid to embrace relationships and heartache in his songwriting. Chris cites influences such as Stevie Wonder, John Mayer, and Gavin DeGraw who all contributed to the polished pop/rock sound that is sure to resonate with all who listen.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Jadon Lavik

Jadon was born in Redmond, Washington, where he was raised in a Christian home with his parents and two siblings. Although he had some experience with music early in life playing violin and guitar, he was most energized about sports and desired to pursue a baseball career. But after an internship at Saddleback church in Southern California, the calling on his life became glaringly obvious.

Jadon Lavik is a worship leader, a songwriter, a husband and father - he's like you and me, a hundred different things. Just like in life, when writing and recording you hope to find the perfect balance of old and new.

Jadon Lavik's seminary background gives him a true concern with using Biblical theology in his worship songs. It is sometimes easier for a songwriter to go with what feels good. Spiritual candy. But Jadon deals with the depths of God's word in his writings.

Now married with two kids, Jadon ministers in the local church and tours the country playing music whenever he can. He also has three Christmas records - which makes him even cooler in my eyes!

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Peder Eide

For over a decade, Peder Eide has led Christ-centered praise and worship for youth conferences, festivals, camps, churches and any other venues students and their families have gathered. For Peder, it's all about effective communication as we draw closer to God and closer to one another.

His passion is for teaching families to worship together and to truly learn the power of praying for one another. He works to unite parents and children, siblings, and spouses - all in worship. Instead of separating the generations for worship, he aims to bring everyone together, blending many styles of music so that no one feels left out.

As an active artist/spokesperson for Compassion International, Peder is humbled to have seen thousands of third world children sponsored through his ministry. He has also experienced the joy of his own family sponsoring many children.

Peder, along with his wonderful wife Sherri, have further invested in the needs children by internationally adopting two beautiful kids of their own, Makenzie and Teshome. Combined with their three biological treasures Taylor, Allison, and Ethan, the Eide's have uniquely tasted worship together and have truly seen the goodness of the Lord.

His latest, critically acclaimed Christmas release, PERFECT SURPRISE, was selected by The USA TODAY as one of its featured holiday selections and the single "Why Wouldn't I", has become a feature song with ministries and families involved in adoption and orphan care.

Random Fact:
Peder dreamed of being on the PGA tour - and plays golf whenever time affords.
