ARTIST OF THE DAY
Plumb

Tiffany Arbuckle Lee is the voice and face of the Christian band Plumb. Off and on, Plumb has been making amazing music that is never quite what the standard of the day happens to be. Call it being "before their time" or retro or inventive - Plumb pulls heartstrings with deep, passionate lyrics and sonically takes listeners to a place they can't get to through any other artist.

Tiffany Lee grew up in Fayetteville, GA and started her career as a backup singer. Her career is in its second decade and her music has been featured on six feature films (including Bruce Almighty) and many other television shows (mostly on the CW). As a busy mom, Plumb doesn't have many concerts, and without pressure from record labels, we never know when new Plumb might pop up. But we wait with bated breath.

Fun Fact: Tiffany Lee also writes for other singers - including Michelle Branch, Kimberly Locke and Mandy Moore.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Newsong

After 30 years and 20 #1 radio hits - Newsong is still pushing the limits to reach a new generation for Christ. Members have come and gone - and some fresh young musicians have joined the core group to produce a sound that is both fresh and classicly Newsong.

When Eddie Carswell and Billy Goodwin, who continue to lead the evolving group, started out in 1981 at Morningside Baptist Church in Valdosta, Georgia, neither of them imagined NewSong would repeatedly outdo itself for so many years. Now the guys are headed into their fourth decade of music and just keeps getting better!

After nearly a decade away, award winning front-man Russ Lee returned to the group.  Give Yourself Away was the result - an album that sounds like Newsong AND the 21st century. Give Yourself Away was once again produced by Charlie Peacock (the guy behind every awesome DC Talk album) and features the vocal harmonies you expect from Newsong, but a punch of fresh musical perspective.

Legit: Newsong founded WinterJam - an American tour that has featured everyone from Newsong and TobyMac to MercyMe and Mandisa.  It's a roving music festival that refuses to charge more than $10 a person - bringing the music you love to the masses!

Studio: Newsong is back in the studio working on a new project this summer!

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Hyland

Hyland is an American Christian pop/rock band originating from Minneapolis, Minnesota. The band released two EPs independently before signing to Tooth & Nail Records in 2010.  The band put in the time, touring regionally and playing every church, Christian music festival and club they could book.  They won a music tournament in 2010, which got them some national recognition and led to T&N Records signing the band.

Musically: Hyland sounds like a mixture of Christian bands Bleach and Anberlin.

October 7th, Hyland is opening up the night for the Believer Tour - featuring Kutless, Fireflight and the Rhett Walker Band!  CLICK HERE for ticket information!

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Matthew West

Dove award winning, GRAMMY nominated Matthew West is the songwriting darling of Nashville.  A pastor’s son, West grew up in Downers Grove, Illinois and released three independent projects before signing to a major label and issuing his first studio album, Happy. The project yielded the hit “More,” which topped the chart for nine weeks and became the most played song on Christian radio in 2004. The following year, he released History, an acclaimed collection that included the hit title track and the instant classic “Only Grace.”

Then life happened.  West underwent a career-threatening vocal surgery in 2007.  He didn't know if he'd ever sing again.  But God brought healing and fresh perspective.  Less than a year after his surgery, West released Something To Say and garnered more listener and critical acclaim than ever before.

Today marks the release of a brand new album: Into The Light.  Just like his previous project, The Story of Your Life, many of the songs on the new record are taken from the stories shared by his fans.  Matthew says about the new album, "When we're kids we are afraid of the dark.  But when we become adults, we fear the light, because we have so much to hide."

Good afternoon!  That's a statement of fact.  It is good.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Joel Engle

Joel was born and grew up in San Francisco, CA.  He never knew his father.  His mother worked multiple jobs to make ends meet, caring for Joel and her two aging parents.   When Joel was only 11, he found his mother lying on the kitchen floor, having suffered a stroke.  She died a few days later.  Just a few years later, his grandfather died and his grandmother went to live in a nursing home.  Joel was a young teenager and suddenly without any family.  At the age of 14 he was taken to a Baptist Children's Home, practically an orphan.

It was through the care of the Baptist Children's Home that Joel met Dale and Nadine Engle - who became his adoptive parents.  A new life, a new name and a young faith in Jesus set Joel on a course through life that he never shied away from.  His new family had a piano and Joel committed himself to learning how to play, praying to God saying, "I will never sing a song or write a song that doesn't glorify your name!"

Joel went on to study music and theology on scholarship at Oklahoma Baptist University. While there, he met and eventually married his wife Valerie. After college, he toured with Dawson McAllister student conferences for three years, playing in front of crowds upward of 500,000 per year. Then in 1997, Joel and wife Val, who shared his heart for ministry, started Spin360, a modern worship resource that provides worship leaders with songs, chord charts, sheet music, and other tools.  Joel's piano and vocal talents were also simultaneously being put to good use with many camp dates, conferences, and outreach opportunities with the Billy Graham Association, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and Student Life.

In, 2007, Joel indicated that he would be retiring from Christian music. His purpose in this was to "transition into church planting." Joel planted the church in Keller, Texas which is called "The Exchange."

Most recently Joel and wife Valerie opened a teenage ministry called "Echo". And he wrote a book: The Exchange: Tired of Living the Christian Life on Your Own?

Today is the last day of Summer!  It's official.  Tomorrow Fall begins (though I've been celebrating pre-Fall with a lot of pumpkin spiced EVERYTHING!  Are you sad to see the Summer go - or excited to be closer to sweater/hoodie weather?  Maybe a bit of both...  Either way - change is here and that means a new opportunity to shed the past and embrace the gift of NOW.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Heather Williams

Heather Williams grew up in extreme poverty with her mom and stepfather. Throughout her early childhood, she suffered intense abuse and was even chained to a tree for punishment in one instance. Her mother gave her away at age 11, and Williams went to live with her grandfather in Michigan. Living with little guidance and the pain of past abuse and rejection, Williams turned to drugs and alcohol as a way to numb the realities of life. As things began to spiral out of control, the young teenager began to have thoughts of suicide and was even homeless at one point.

At age 18, however, the dangerous road Williams was on took a U-turn when she briefly reconnected with her birth father. Her father, a Christian, invited Williams to church.

“I came to this place where it was either, OK, I’m going to give my life to God, or I just don’t know if I’m going to live. So, I walked up that aisle at that church, and I gave my life to God.”

Having grown up with a love of music, after becoming a Christian, Williams says she began to write songs from a perspective of radical change. But then another wave of tragedy struck the budding singer/songwriter when her first child passed away shortly after he was born. But this incredible tragedy only drew Heather closer to God.

For Williams, she describes her songs as “conversations,” sometimes joyful, sometimes angry, sometimes a mix of both. Today, Williams is grateful for how far grace has brought her. She and her husband, a full-time youth pastor, live in Florida with their two young children.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Krystal Meyers

Krystal Meyers is from the OC. Not Ocean City, MD - Orange County, CA!  But before Krystal entered high school, her family had relocated to Eugene, OR and then on to Nashville - the epicenter of Christian music in the 1990s.

She's three albums into a Christian music career (and at only 25).  Krystal Meyers started singing at home at the age of two; sang her first solo in church at the age of five; started writing songs by age ten and was playing the acoustic guitar by thirteen.  Her debut album hit shelves when she was only 16!

Krystal's break-out hit was a Christian rock anthem called Anticonformity.  She wrote it with a friend in the 8th grade.  The girls, both strong in their faith, were heart-broken at their peers delving into drugs, sex and wandering away from God.

Prophecy: When Krystal was a child, an elderly lady in her church told her parents that "Krystal is going to be a missionary around the world."  And that's how Krystal sees her music career.  She gets to take her walk with Jesus to the entire world through music.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Todd Agnew

Todd Agnew modeled his early career after Rich Mullins. He was a lone gun, describing his methodology as, "I've always been kind of the hammer - walk in, speak the truth, blow up the town, walk off and let all the pastors apply that truth or pick up the pieces." If you've seen him in concert you know that he isn't afraid to stop mid-song and tell the crowd exactly how he feels.

But in 2008 Todd went from flying solo all over the world to owning a home, getting married, and becoming a step-dad. You can imagine that changes your perspective. His latest album is filled with a sense of Joy, Hope, and Love that had been missing in both Todd's life and his music.

His latest album How To Be Loved is filled with the lessons of Grace Todd has learned over the past couple of years being a family man.

Good afternoon!  That's a command.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Lenny Leblanc

It was nearly impossible to turn on the radio in the late 70’s without hearing Lenny LeBlanc’s hit ballad, “Falling.” He was an integral part of the phenomenon that became know as Muscle Shoals Music. A self-taught musician, Lenny discoverede an old upright piano in his aunt’s dark basement as a child - and that discovery opened up life's doors for him.

LeBlanc's talent took him from a middle-school garage band to working in studios with The Temptations, Hank Williams Jr., Roy Orbison, the Supremes, and more. In 1977 a friend who had returned from serving in Vietnam had found Christ and shared Jesus with Lenny. The friend gave Lenny a Bible and he began to read.

"I didn’t know how to talk to God, but I started asking Him if He was real; and He started revealing himself to me."

After finding Christ, Leblanc's career came to a screeching hault. He lost nearly everything except his house. He did skilled carpentry work to earn a modest living and along the way began building and designing handmade furniture. He loved his church, but found the music to be stale, so he started writing music again - only this time for Christ.

Now, three decades later, we still sing songs written by Lenny Leblanc in church. Above All and There Is None Like You are some of his more popular worship songs. He currently lives in Florence, Alabama with his wife Sherrie and daughter Hanna. Lenny continues to write pop and country songs and still travels nationally and internationally as a Christian artist and serves as worship leader at Faith Church in Florence, Alabama.

The Daniel Doss Band

The Daniel Doss band is just getting started and they have already had several radio hits.  In 2012 they released their sophomore album through Mission House Music in Nashville.

Their motto: Christ-follower and worship leader first. Chart-topping Christian recording artists second. The Daniel Doss Band seeks to engage people at the spiritual level, and evoke God-sized encounters through worship.

Kind Words: Mark Hall of Casting Crowns says, “I have spent a lot of time with these guys and they are the real deal. Daniel’s writing is sincere, honest, and speaks clearly about God’s love and hope in Christ. Their music will impact anyone who hears it.”

Church: Currently Daniel and family is helping plant a church in Valparaiso, IN.  Daniel is leading worship and his childhood friend Ben Lamb is pastoring.

Why is it that no matter how good a Thursday is, and I've had some amazing Thursdays, when you get to the end of it and realize you STILL have to get through Friday, you blame Thursday for not being Friday?  I think we should blame Friday for being in the way.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Andy Cherry

Andy is a newly married worship leader out of Charlotte One - a church in North Carolina.  His songs are first and foremost, worship anthems.  They were born out of a desire to get God's people asking hard questions about their faith - putting in the work - becoming desparate for God's will, no matter what the cost.

Worship Revelation: One morning, leading worship at church, Andy was silently wishing to be anywhere else.  He was tired and felt like nothing he was doing mattered.  It was then that God revealed to him, Hey Andy, I don't need you to do this.  I want you to. Andy decided it would be best to get on board with what God is doing, rather than try to make music about himself.

Family Fact: Andy is the youngest of four siblings. All sisters. Yikes...

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Paul Baloche

A native of Maple Shade, New Jersey, Paul Baloche is currently the worship pastor at Community Christian Fellowship in Lindale, Texas. When writing, Paul composes on piano and acoustic guitar, favoring guitar when leading worship. His wife, Rita Baloche, is also a Christian songwriter. Baloche is one of the writers for Compassionart, a charity founded by Martin Smith from Delirious!

Many of his songs are among the most performed songs in American churches according to the CCLI (a company that handles music licensing). Among them are Open the Eyes of My Heart (ranked number 2) and Above All (ranked number 22).

Baloche has also written a book, God Songs, and released instructional DVDs that cover a variety of issues central to contemporary worship, such as music styles, music theory, creating flow in worship, and guitar techniques. In addition to his material output, Baloche participates in several seminars for worship leaders and musicians throughout North America and Asia.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Moriah Peters

Moriah Peters is just 19 years old.  Fresh out of high school, she followed God's prompting to Nashville and recorded an album that has already produced two hit singles!  Her original plan was to immediately head to college in pursuit of a psychology degree with a music minor - then grad school to become a lawyer. Even though she's enrolled at Grand Canyon University - her music success might put college on the backburner for a while.

Moriah Peters is stunningly beautiful - but don't let her love of dresses and high heels fool you. She says she's an unabashed Tom Boy who would pick football over a mani/pedi any day of the week!

Family: Moriah is of Mexican/French descent.  So she loves food and has a great relationship with her family.  She testifies to a strong relationship with her earthly Dad and Heavenly Father in giving her extremely high standards when it comes to dating and also her solid self-esteem.  Also, you can't grow up in a  Mexican/French/American household without having a love-affair with food!  Moriah loves to cook and says her best memories are in the kitchen and around the dinner table.

Pet: Moriah has a baby box-turtle named Sushi.

Today is one of those days that in the future, after Global Warming ravages the planet, people will say about their Monday (now regularly filled with flooding, scorching temperatures, earthquakes and volcano explosions) - "they just don't make 'em like they used too..."

Enjoy this beautiful day with some beautiful music!

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Mark Schultz

With numerous chart toppers, Dove Awards, and album sales - Schultz has become a staple on Christian radio around the world. He's toured with other big-names and invited some of them to co-write with him on his album Come Alive. Matthew West, Bart Millard, and Joy Williams all pitched in to make his 5th studio release something special.

After touring to support Come Alive Mark took some time to rest.  He travelled with his wife, wrote a novel, recorded an instrumental album, biked across America for orphans and then went back to work... Honestly, his idea of a vacation sounds exhausting.  Now, a new label home and a new album breathes fresh life into a stellar career.

A couple of years ago, Mark biked across the US as a fundraiser for The James Fund, which provides for Mexican orphanages. He travelled over 3000 miles on a bicycle, stopping each night to play a concert and take up an offering for The James Fund.  Forget, Tony Stark - Mark Schultz is Iron Man!

It's been a busy season of life for Mark, who wrote a novel based on his song Letters from War and released his first instrumental album Reinaissance.

Originally from East Texas, Chris Tomlin grew up enjoying country music and playing the acoustic guitar with his dad. Tomlin wrote his first song at the age of 14 and always sensed that God would use him best through music. He graduated college with a degree in Psychology, but began hanging out with pastor Louie Giglio. The two would go on to create the Passion conference in 1997.

Teaching: A long time partner with Passion City Church (founded by Louie Giglio in the ATL), Chris Tomlin is heading up a bi-annual worship conference called LIFT.  Tomlin, Giglio, Nathan and Christy Nockels and David Crowder are all speakers/teachers at the events!

Acolades: Chris Tomlin and his band received their first GRAMMY Award this year for And If Our God Is For Us....  Chris Tomlin was named "Top Christian Artist" and "Our God" was honored for "Top Christian Song" at the 2012 Billboard Music Awards.

Family: Chris and his wife Lauren welcomed their first child, daughter Ashlyn Alexandra Tomlin, last September.

Random Fact: Chris' middle name is Dwayne.

Everytime it rains, I smile - because it means I won't have to mow the lawn tonight.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Kerrie Roberts

Kerrie Roberts is a big voice in a little package. She grew up singing in church, where she'd often have to stand on a crate so that people sitting further back than the front row could see where her powerful voice was coming from! Kerrie's dad was a pastor and her mom the choir director for their church. Being front and center in church was bred into her from birth!

Kerrie began writing her first songs in high school, performing one during her own graduation. When the time came for college, Kerrie chose to get her degree in Studio Music and Jazz Vocal Performance at the University of Miami.

Kerrie Roberts was determined to make it in the music industry - and perservered through a trying time of life.  While living in Florida, she financially enabled her music pursuits by teaching elementary school and working as an accountant. In 2008, she relocated to New York with two suitcases in hand, moving into a tiny apartment with almost no furniture. Working a desk job by day, she pursued her musical dream at night.

“Little kids have dreams. For me, it was ‘I’m going to be a singer.’ And I never grew out of it.”

TV: Kerrie's music has been featured on Fox and ABC for various promotions and TV show soundtracks.

Joy comes in the morning (and the afternoons on 102.5 FM).

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Atmospheres

Atmospheres is the worship ministry at C3 Church Asheville, NC. The collective of musicians and singers based in C3 Church Asheville have crafted a powerful sound, with unexpected quality out of a church plant in the not so urban area of the Smokey Mountains.

C3 challenges any music ministry to add their songs to their worship line-up, but with the warning "you'll need a strong electric guitarist" because "there ain't much acoustic-worship leading here."

Atmospheres (the name taken by C3 Asheville's music ministry) has unassumingly obliterated every stereotype conjured by descriptives like small church, first album, and worship music with songs that are epic and sweeping declarations of faith and vision.

The group is fronted by Steve Deal, a native of Australia who served at a C3 church in Lawrenceville, GA before heading to Appalachia.  Another worship leader, Stephen von Heyking, relocated from Calgary, Alberta, Canada to join Steve Deal with the intent of building upon an already urgent and unconventional musical culture in the North Carolina Mountains.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
John Waller

John Waller's career began in the 1990s with his Christian rock band According to John. Now he's best known for his hit songs The Blessing and While I'm Waiting. The Georgia native and wife Josee headed to Colorado after A2J disbanded. There they helped launch Southlink Church. His second music career really soared with the movie Fireproof featured While I'm Waiting on its acclaimed soundtrack.

Joshua 24:15 is the inspiration for John's latest release. He took nearly two years to write and produce As For Me and My House saying, "You really have to walk with the Lord and you have to experience life and allow the Lord to teach you something."

Monday, September 3, 2012 - Labor Day

Happy (?) Labor Day!  I'm not sure what the appropriate greeting is on such a day that heralds the unofficial end of summer and serves no particular religious or social purpose.  But if you go the day off... good on you.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Kristian Stanfill

Kristian Stanfill grew up in church.  He loved music, and even taught himself to play guitar. As soon as the church youth group heard he could play a few chords, he immediately became the so-called “Worship Leader.” He learned songs by DC Talk and Audio Adrenaline, and eventually Passion and Chris Tomlin.  In just a few years time, Kristian would join Tomlin on stage as a worship leader in the Passion movement!

The Call has been unmistakable in Stanfill’s life, even as that 15-year-old growing up in the Atlanta suburb of Marietta, finding the connection between the strings of a guitar and the Maker of music.

Worship Leader: Kristian Stanfill isn't in this for the money or fame - but to point towards the cross.  He freely offers chord charts for all of his songs for any worship leader or musician to download for free!

Passion: Kristian Stanfill is featured on Passion: White Flag as one of the worship leaders at this year's Atlanta conference.  He led worship with Chris Tomlin, David Crowder, Christy Nockels, Matt Redman, Charlie Hall and many others.
