Happy er... Reformation day?

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Audio Adrenaline

Mark Stuart and Will McGinniss met at Kentucky Christian University. Stuart and his brother David were putting together a rock band and McGinniss struck up a friendship with the pair. Along with David and Barry Blair they launched a band called A-180. The band recorded two independent albums before signing a record contract with ForeFront Records. It was then that they officially became Audio Adrenaline.

Christian music would never be the same - or youth camp.  Hits like Big House and We're A Band propelled the band to the forefront of a thriving Christian rock scene in the mid-90s.  They were headliners for every Christian festival on the planet - and toured ceaselessly.  Ultimately, that took a toll on their families and relationships.  Exhaustion and family strain, plus a vocal disease for lead singer Mark Stuart led to the end of Audio Adrenaline.

Or so it seemed...

Just last year the band reformed - now with Kevin Max (formerly of DCTalk) as the new lead singer - with Mark Stuart writing and producing for the band (still unable to sing).  The band's new album is taking the world by storm - and proceeds from the net profit go to fund the Hands & Feet Project in Haiti!  It's a brand new life for Audio Adrenaline!

The week is half-way over - well done everybody!

ARTIST OF THE DAY
NewSong

After 30 years and 20 #1 radio hits - NewSong is still pushing the limits to reach a new generation for Christ. Members have come and gone - and some fresh young musicians have joined the core group to produce a sound that is both fresh and classic NewSong.

When Eddie Carswell and Billy Goodwin, who continue to lead the evolving group, started out in 1981 at Morningside Baptist Church in Valdosta, Georgia, neither of them imagined NewSong would repeatedly outdo itself for so many years. Now the guys are headed into their fourth decade of music and just keeps getting better!

After nearly a decade away, award winning front-man Russ Lee returned to the group in 2010.  Their newest album Swallow The Ocean captures the essence of this evolving, multi-generational band, yet somehow still has the heart and soul of the NewSong of old.

Trend-Setters: NewSong founded and continue to tour as a part of WinterJam.  This massive multi-artist American tour brings Christian music's biggest acts to cities all across America and never charges more than $10.  The goal - to bring the best music to everyone - and provide an incredible time of worship for the whole family!

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Phil Stacey

Phil Stacey got his start on American Idol - making it all the way to the Top 5 on Season 6 before getting the boot.  But despite not winning the singing competition, things are working out just fine for this Christian radio staple.  The native of Kentucky brings a southern rock charm to emotional lyrics, and an honesty that is incredibly endearing.

Both grandfathers and his dad were pastors, so Phil has grown up in the Church, and that is where his heart is.  Phil attended Lee University in Cleveland, TN where he became part of the highly acclaimed Lee Singers.  In fact, he says that once he made the singing group, he stayed in school JUST to be a part of the group.  He even made the ranks of their prestigious Second Edition touring group.

He serves as music minister at his home church and is very busy balancing a music career, church life and his family.  Phil was also in the Navy.  He enlisted (as did thousands of others) following the events of September 11, 2001.

Idol Fact: Chris Sligh was Phil's friend and roommate for Season 6 of American Idol. Now both are making great Christ-focussed music for a living!

Wait - October is almost over?!
When did that happen...

ARTIST OF THE DAY
David Crowder*Band

We'll start with some unfortunate news: The David Crowder*Band is no more.  But our purpose today is to find out about one of the biggest Praise & Worship bands of the past decade and a half...

DC*B was born out of a need for an authentic worship experience at Baylor University. David Crowder and Chris Seay founded University Baptist Church in 1995 - while still in school. The church grew - and so did the worship team. Crowder began writing songs to incorporate into the worship times at the church and eventually the church released an independent CD, Pour Over Me.

After appearances at summer festivals and regional events, Sparrow Records signed the band who would go on to be a leader in the Passion movement and challenge what worship music could be.  After the HUGE success of Illuminate, the band released an electronica EP called Sunsets & Sushi, putting a new spin on their hit worship songs. And alongside A Collsion, the band released B Collision, featuring bluegrass and country versions of their biggest hits.

Now on to the good news, two bands have birthday out of the phoenix-esque embers of DC*B, The Digital Age & Crowder.  Same guys, fun new music, endless opportunity to worship!

Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike...

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Brandon Heath

Since his 2006 debut, Christian music has twice honored Brandon Heath as Male Vocalist of the Year, he's been nominated for five GRAMMYs, an American Music Award, and holds a variety of honors in GMA Dove Awards.

Off stage, Heath seeks opportunities to merge his public platform with his heart for community, regularly working with Young Life, Blood:Water Mission, Restore International and unofficially volunteering for many other human rights agencies on a global scale.

Brandon Heath created the annual “Love Your Neighbor” benefit with songwriter Jason Ingram, in partnership with Fellowship Bible Church in Brentwood, Tennessee, for a night of music to raise funds and gather volunteers for a focused need in the Nashville community.

His Story: When he was just 3 Brandon's parents divorced. Growing up, Brandon was bitter towards his family, but he found comfort in Christ while in high school. At age 16 Brandon was invited to a Christian camp with some friends. He accepted Christ and began to learn about forgiveness.  A journey he is still on.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Unspoken

Unspoken first came together after lead singer Chad Mattson met guitarist Mike Gomez on a mission trip in the Dominican Republic. Chad had been struggling with drug and alcohol addiction for years, and decided to go on a mission trip to re-build his relationship with God. It was there in the Dominican Republic where Chad’s eyes were opened and he came to know Christ in a powerful way.

After Mike moved to Chad’s hometown of Maine, the two began playing music together, and performing live shows. Bass player Jon Lowry and drummer Ariel Munoz from Puerto Rico, later joined the band and Unspoken was born.

In addition to their music, the band is involved with Celebrate Recovery, a 12-step recovery program for substance abuse. “In the early days of the band, God reminded me that there are thousands of singers better than me and thousands of guitar players better than Mike, but He chose us to do this for Him. We have been chosen to bring a message to the Church…wake up, find your contentment and satisfaction in Him, hang out with Him, and have a real relationship with Him,” says Chad. “Yes, we love music and we love people but more than anything we want to see people reach their full potential in Jesus.”

Hey-Oh!
A new week has begun!

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Nichole Nordeman

Back in 1998, Nichole Nordeman's album Wide Eyed burst onto the scene with a sincerity and even a desparation that hadn't been heard in a while. Songs like To Know You and Who You Are were so unafraid to tackle doubt that the album ushered in a new era of songwriting in Christian music - paving the way for Sara Groves, David Crowder, Jason Gray and others.

15 years and 9 Dove Awards later - Nichole's voice is still a recognizable meloncholy that grabs your attention. Though it has been several years since she's recorded a full length album, Nichole Nordeman has been busy song writing with and for other artists, including Bethany Dillon and Amy Grant. She wrote and recorded songs for Music Inspired By the Chronicles of Narnia and VeggieTales' Sweetpea Beauty.

Her biggest accomplishment in the last several years was writing/co-writing the entire double disc album Music Inspired by The Story.  This collection features 18 songs written from the first person perspective of Bible characters.  It features the voices of the biggest names in Christian music (MercyMe, Casting Crowns, Natalie Grant, Amy Grant, Chris Tomlin, Brandon Heath and many more) - but Nichole actually co-wrote the entire project!

Nichole also lent her voice to a new recording of Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus which is featured on a modern hymns collection called Jesus, Firm Foundation. Her latest single is from a compilation of songs inspired by the life and teaching of Billy Graham.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
33 Miles

Chris Lockwood and Jason Barton are 33 Miles. After the breakout success of One Life,  founding member Collin Stoddard left the trio to follow God's calling on his life to be a full time worship pastor. Now the duo (Chris and Jason) press on, making music, leading worship and growing their faith.

“Nothing we can accomplish in business, no amount of education—nothing compares to Jesus,” says Chris, “But how our salvation translates to how we live today is the question. To wake up every day and make the choice to live with heaven in mind, to not let the circumstances of this day override that choice. It’s easier said than done, but getting up every day and trying makes it more and more possible.”

Chris and Jason raised the money to produce their latest worship album through Kickstarter - relying on their fans and faith instead of dealing with a record label.  The album came out this month, so looks like they hit their goal!

So...
Beach day?

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Newsboys

Part of the Holy Trinity of 90s Christian music (DC Talk, Audio Adrenaline, and The Newsboys) - The Newsboys have been touring the globe for nearly 25 years! The band originated in Australia, but the current line-up is a bit more diverse.

Facts: The Newsboys were formed in 1985 as "The News" in Queensland, Austrailia. There are no original members performing in the band's current line-up.

The Newsboys just released a brand new album (their 17th!) called Restart and it continues to rearrange your preconceived ideas of what worship music can be.  "This generation has lost its heroes and people to look up to. As a band we want to reengage our culture and have a real positive effect," said drummer Duncan Phillips to the Christian Post. "I think it’s time that we jumped in not to be apart of it, knowing who we are and having courage to do the great commission."

Phillips unabashedly says Restart is "the best Newsboys record we’ve ever penned and recorded," and his bandmates agree.

14 Days until SHARATHON!

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Sara Groves

This former teacher, who lives in Minnesota with her husband and their three kids probably wouldn't strike you as a famous songwriter if you caught her in the grocery store or out at the park playing - but she's already a legend in Nashvillian circles.

When it comes to songwriting, Sara Groves influences the influencers. Her most vocal admirers range from pioneers of Christian worldview music, including Randy Stonehill, Michael Card and Charlie Peacock, to her peers today, Natalie Grant, Jars of Clay, Nichole Nordeman, Point of Grace and Bethany Dillon.

Sara Groves started writing songs when she was four years old. She describes her youth as being "lonesome", and she wrote about deep issues while still in junior high school. Eventually, she took a songwriting course, prompted by her husband, and she began to take the art seriously.

Home Life: Sara and her family sold their house, downsized to a smaller space and bought a hundred year old church building in St. Paul, MN. After months of renovating the building, they opened Art House North - a public art house inspired by Charlie Peacock's work in Texas.

The Groves Mission Statement: We believe every person has a next step with God. Whether you're an atheist or the ninety-nine-year-old woman who's served God all of her life, I'm writing music about those processes, those moments to pause and ask, ˜Where am I on the road, and where would God have me go next?"

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Hawk Nelson

Hawk Nelson is a Christian pop/rock band from Peterborough, Ontario. The band was voted "Favorite New Artist" by CCM Magazine in their February 2006 Reader's Choice Awards.  For over a decade the band has pounded the pavement, making fun Christ-focused music.

Relentless touring - six albums - multiple Dove nominations - lots of fun!

But in April of last year, lead singer Jason Dunn told the guys in the band that he was ready to strike out on a solo career.  After lots of prayer (and a bit of encouragement from friend Bart Millard of MercyMe), guitarist Jon Steingard stepped up as the new lead singer of Hawk Nelson.

So while the band's DNA is pretty much the same - in many ways, this is a brand new Hawk Nelson.
