It's the LAST DAY of July!
ARTIST OF THE DAY
Superchick
Back in 1999 there were plenty of female Christian musicians - but almost zero female Christian rockers. Sisters Tricia and Melissa Brock thought that was a travesty - so they formed Superchick! They made their debut as a band opening up for Audio Adrenaline in front of 5,000 people. And they've been rockin' around the world every since ... well except for a hiatus the last couple of years after Tricia got married and former drummer Chase Lovelace passed away after a lengthy battle with cancer.
Lead singer Tricia Brock (Baumhardt) released a couple of solo-worship albums, produced by her husband who also happens to be a member of Stellar Kart. Tricia has a new album coming out this August called Radiate.
The Barlow Connection: All the boys in the band were smitten with some pastor's daughters at a church outside of Chicago, so the band wrote a song about THEM.
Too Legit: Superchick has had FIVE Number 1 Hits on Christian radio charts! Currently the band is in studio working on a new project for this Fall! Also, adding to the cool factor, they regularly rock a keytar in concert. A KEYTAR!

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Sarah Reeves
Born into a family of musicians, Sarah knew from an early age that music would be her career. With a father who was well-respected in the mainstream music business, she naturally assumed she would follow in his footsteps. But a radical encounter with God at a youth camp when she was 15 years old forever changed Sarah's focus.
"For the first time in my life I saw people excited about worshiping God, people who were pursuing God with all their hearts," Sarah declares. "I longed for that kind of relationship with God. During that week, God messed up my whole perspective on worship. He humbled me. He filled me with the Holy Spirit. He called me to be a worship leader. He told me, 'Life is not about you, Sarah. Life is about Me. From this point on you will live to glorify My name, to reach people, and lead them into My arms.' My life has not been the same since that day."
Sarah led worship as the opener for a Plumb concert and Tiffany Arbuckle Lee was instantly struck by her talent and passion. Tiffany Lee (Plumb) gave a demo to Sparrow Records and that is how Sarah got her first record contract.
"I have one goal and one true destiny, and that is to bring people to the heart of God, to help them understand His love, His mercy, and the freedom and power of worship. My goal is to lead the nations into His arms. That's my calling."
Name Game: Sarah's new last name is "Kothlow" - congrats on your marriage! She's still keeping Reeves as a stage name.

Are you ready for a new week?!
Let's do this!
ARTIST OF THE DAY
Jenny Simmons & Addison Road
Addison Road formed when Jenny Chisolm met Ryan Simmons at Baylor University in Waco, TX. Originally called The Jenny Chisolm band - a few friends from church played with the band as they went to school. It wasn't long before Jenny Chisolm became Jenny Simmons (cause they got married...) and the band became Addison Road. (They named the band after a sound tech's baby.)
Addison Road had the worst 2010, ever. Their tour van caught fire and they lost clothes, baby toys and sound equipment. However, fans and local churches around the country rallied for the band, buying new clothes and equipment for the band. Despite seeing God provide, the constant set-backs wore on the band, who ultimately decided to call it day.
Jenny continues to make music, co-written and produced by her husband Ryan. Her debut solo project was called The Becoming.

Everybody's working for the weekend...
ARTIST OF THE DAY
Shaun Groves
Shaun’s own salvation story began at the age of six with a dash down the aisle during an altar call given by a fiery revival meeting preacher. Shaun’s decision that day was fueled by fear; he knew he needed to be saved from eternal separation from God. But that knowledge alone didn't bring Shaun peace. At age 12 Shaun found the peace he was missing when he learned that God actually loved him. Fueled with a strengthening relationship with Christ, Shaun developed a love for music that propelled the weakest member of the school band all the way to the first chair, and on to a full music scholarship at Baylor University.
The life plan Shaun created at Baylor made sense: marry his sweetheart Becky, become a church minister and write Christian songs on the side. But an internship with a Nashville music publisher led to a job, and that led to interest around town in his singing and songwriting. Shaun signed a recording contract at the end of 2000, just a week before the birth of the couple’s first child.
Shaun Groves' 2001 debut Invitation to Eavesdrop scored five songs on the charts and a half dozen Dove Award nominations, including New Artist and Song of the Year for Welcome Home. He was soon touring coast to coast and around the world with Bebo Norman, Jars of Clay and Michael W. Smith. “New plan,” he thought.
After a few years of working the music scene, and rarely seeing his family, Shaun found himself doubting the trajectory of life. After becoming involved with Compassion International, Shaun found his special purpose. He and his family began working with families in El Salvador and speaking at churches around the US, bringing light to the situation. Now, more than just a musician, the Groves family consider themselves communicators bent on connecting the first world to the third - for the betterment of both.

It's another one of those Thursdays that feels like Friday 'til you realize you still have a Friday to go through at the end of the day...
ARTIST OF THE DAY
Hearts of Saints
The band's sophomore album, For All Of Us is a double-disc collection of both worship songs and original songs of encouragement. Their goal was to both lead worship and encourage anyone, whether they know Jesus yet or not.
One song on the album chronicles the shot in the gut the band suffered when they found out a young fan of theirs had committed suicide. The band wrestled with the frailty of life, the difficulties facing today's teenagers and the natural guilt of wondering if they were doing enough to encourage the body of Christ.
Line-Up: Craig Felker (frontman), Jason Killebrew (drums), Jesse Grisham (guitar) and Joel Purdy (bass)

Soon July will be over.
And all the ads will be for "back to school."
So it might be time to start milking this Summer for some fun!
ARTIST OF THE DAY
Nichole Nordeman
Back in 1998, Nichole Nordeman's album Wide Eyed burst onto the scene with a sincerity and even a desparation that hadn't been heard in a while. Songs like To Know You and Who You Are were so unafraid to tackle doubt that the album ushered in a new era of songwriting in Christian music - paving the way for Sara Groves, David Crowder, Jason Gray and others.
15 years and 9 Dove Awards later - Nichole's voice is still a recognizable meloncholy that grabs your attention. Though it has been several years since she's recorded a full length album, Nichole Nordeman has been busy song writing with and for other artists, including Bethany Dillon and Amy Grant. She wrote and recorded music for Music Inspired By the Chronicles of Narnia and VeggieTales' Sweetpea Beauty.
Her biggest accomplishment in the last several years was writing/co-writing the entire double disc album Music Inspired by The Story. This collection features 18 songs written from the first person perspective of Bible characters. It features the voices of the biggest names in Christian music (MercyMe, Casting Crowns, Natalie Grant, Amy Grant, Chris Tomlin, Brandon Heath and many more) - but Nichole actually wrote the entire project!
Nichole Nordeman and Amy Grant recorded the Ruth & Naomi song I'm With You on Music Inspired by The Story. The song is about suffering through loss without losing sight of God's love and the love of those close to you. The entire process of writing the album led Nichole to write the book Love Story - which chronicles her journey through the Bible, preparing these epic story-songs.
Nicole most recently lent her voice to a new recording of Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus which is featured on a modern hymns collection called Jesus, Firm Foundation.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Chris Sligh
Chris Sligh entered the American Idol spotlight and earned a lot of fans. Ultimately he didn't win the singing competition, but that time in the spotlight earned him a shot in the music industry. While he could have written and performed in the secular market, Sligh felt called to use his talents to minister to Christians.
“I chose to be in Christian music. I walked away from a mainstream record deal because I felt like this was where God had me.” - Chris Sligh
Chris Sligh signed with Word records and has written and produced a couple of fantastic albums. On top of his own music, Sligh writes and produces for other artists - in fact, he's penned over 150 songs for other musicians, both Christian and secular (including the Rascall Flatts hit Here Comes Goodbye).
More recently, Sligh has stepped out of the limelite to focus on being a husband and father - and most importantly a man of God. He's the worship pastor at Rocky Mountain Christian Church in Niwot, CO (just North of Boulder).

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Selah
Selah's current line-up is Allan Hall, Amy Perry, and Todd Smith. The group, like most people, has weathered many storms. From the death of children, through illnesses and line-up changes, the group has stayed faithful to what God has called them to do - to sing, to worship, and to tell people about Jesus Christ!
From their inception, Selah has always been synonymous with hymns. In fact, the trio’s 1999 debut, Be Still My Soul, helped initiate a hymn revival in Christian music that is still thriving today.
The Present: Birthed from seasons of personal hardship, Selah’s latest is a celebration of the hope Todd Smith, Allan Hall and Amy Perry have discovered through surrender to God, and a testimony to the group’s collective desire to share these stories of hope with broken people through music. With Hope of the Broken World, Selah recognizes their opportunity to relate with and help listeners heal through songs that poignantly contrast worldly hurt with spiritual hope.
The Past: Nicole Sponberg is Todd Smith's sister and was a founding member of the group.
The Future: Selah is currently wrapping up recording for their newest album - due out this Fall!

Whatever they are doing - it's working! With two Gold-selling albums, seven Dove Awards, two Stellar Awards, a Soul Train Award, seven Grammy® Award nominations, and four Grammy® Awards. The most recent being a 2011 Grammy® for Best Pop/Contemporary Gospel Album (Love God.Love People.)

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Ayiesha Woods
Born in Long Island, New York - Ayiesha has lived in many different places and cultures including Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, and Texas. Plus she spent much of her childhood in Bermuda, which gives her unique sound some Caribbean spice!
Ayiesha is the granddaughter of a professional musician and the daughter of a musical man, so she was surrounded with opportunities to hone and develop her natural talent. Throughout high school she found herself singing in chorus, playing in the school band, harmonizing in the church choir or participating in musical ensembles - plus she was endlessly fiddling with guitars and pianos, picking out melodies to sing along to.
Ayiesha Woods was "discovered" by Toby Mac while he was visiting family in Jamaica. The local Jamaican station was playing Ayiesha Woods music and he noticed the lyrics were about faith. Toby Mac hunted her down and immediately signed her to Gotee Records.
Right now Ayiesha is taking time away from the music biz to focus on a more important job - being Mom to her son JJ!

ARTIST OF THE DAY
JJ Heller
Most overnight successes take years to accomplish. For example, JJ Heller began writing and performing music full time with her husband Dave back in 2003. But it wasn't until 2009 that her song Your Hands skyrocketed her to Christian radio recognition. Only in the entertainment industry can a 10 year career be classified as an over-night success.
Family: The Hellers have two daughters and are based out of Phoenix, Arizona (it's a dry heat).
When you listen to JJ Heller, listen for honesty and melody. It's those two words that define her style and life. JJ is actively songwriting, blogging, sewing, decorating and being a wife and mother. Her latest (6th) studio album is called Loved. The album was written in defiance of a season of tragedy that included the death of Dave's brother after a battle with cancer.
JJ says: "God's helped me to see life as an adventure rather than a series of potential hurts. The world can be scary, but when we know we're loved, we can be open to risks because we are confident in our identity."

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Mark Smeby
“I love the idea that we are all on the road to our actual homeland—that we are merely travelers passing through this world. It’s not that the value of where we’re at right now is diminished, but we realize we are meant for something more than this temporary, superficial, broken world.” - Mark Smeby
Mark Smeby hails from Minneapolis, MN (Which is apparently a breeding ground for Christian songwriters). He is currently living and working in Franklin, TN - just outside of Nashville. His heart for classic hymns and deep worship is evident in his latest album Hymns for the Journey.
Early influences: Michael W. Smith, Billy Joel, Kathy Troccoli, Barry Manilow, 2nd Chapter of Acts, Captain & Tennille. (He's a piano ballad kind of guy)

Smile a little harder.
ARTIST OF THE DAY
Ashes Remain
Ashes Remain’s Josh Smith and Ryan Nalepa (guitar/keys) met one summer leading worship at a youth camp located in rural Maryland - not too far from Gettysburg, PA. Over the course of that summer, Smith and Nalepa had a feeling that God was calling them to walk down similar paths. Desiring to be obedient to God’s will, Smith and Nalepa committed to pray together each day throughout the summer, asking God that if He wanted them to form a band to make His will known to them.
Months later, Smith, back in Florida, received a phone call from a church in Maryland inviting him to lead worship full time. It just so happened that the church was ten minutes down the road from Nalepa.
The band's Fair Trade Services debut What I've Become was written mostly for teenagers, from the perspective of what it is like to feel as if there is no hope, where you are your own worst enemy and ultimately what it looks like to go from that very real and dark place to one where there is hope and step into the light.
That journey from dark to light isn't always a swift one and sometimes has to be walked many times, but it is a journey that the band is familiar with and feels called to go on with their fans.
As lead vocalist Josh Smith puts it, “We’re just broken people who need Jesus.”
Sounds Like: Ashes Remain sounds like early Kutless mixed with some Skillet. Hard-hitting rock with a heart for worship.

Hot, humid and awesome - that's your afternoon Joy Ride forecast!
ARTIST OF THE DAY
Third Day
Formed waaaay back in 1992, Third Day might have started as a country rock worship outfit from Marietta, GA (just outside Atlanta) - but they have since conquered the world with their music! They've won Dove Awards and GRAMMYs and played arenas around the world. They've been featured on TV and movies. They've had over a dozen #1 radio hits. Pretty much anything they have set out to do - they've accomplished.
And yet, they are still cranking out the best music of their careers! Miracle is the band's 11th full-length studio album and it does not disappoint.
Awards Tally: To date Third Day has 1 American Music Award, 4 GRAMMY Awards and over 20 Dove Awards - and that's not even counting nominations!

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Jared Anderson
Known for his work with New Life Church and the Desperation Band, Jared Anderson is the writer of such modern worship favorites as Rescue and Amazed. Anderson went to college at Oral Roberts University where he studied music and made a couple of indie records. He eventually returned home to Colorado, and to New Life.
As his church was rocked by scandal surrounding their lead pastor (Ted Haggard), the church learned about Grace, forgiveness and delved into a closer walk with God. As they continue to rebuild, they find themselves asking new questions about who God is calling them to be. Jared wrote and produced a live worship album and DVD from New Life called Live From My Church to help in the healing.
Family Mission: Jared and his wife have long wanted to adopt and are currently in the process of adopting two little girls from Haiti. The whole family (they already have 4 kids) are learning Hatian Creole as a family and have visited the troubled island for mission work.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Mandisa
Mandisa was a fan favorite on Season 5 of American Idol, going to the final rounds despite dealing with some harsh words from the judges about her weight. She has discussed at length in her book Idol Eyes: My New Perspective on Faith, Fat & Fame, that those hurtful words cut deeply, causing a lot of pain and embarrassment.
Now with three GRAMMY Award nominations under her belt, and four full albums breaking the charts in Christian music - Mandisa is showing the world that Christians are real people - with real problems but who have a REAL Savior.
Her Struggle: On the whole weight thing - Mandisa has lost over 100 pounds through diet and exercise!
“A struggle is a struggle, and Jesus is there through it all. He is there in compassion and grace. I have found that what He has spoken to me through these songs has been encouraging and I think that’ll be true for other people who are going through their own hard times,” - Mandisa

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Sidewalk Prophet
Integrating worship with real life - that is one of the simple truths Sidewalk Prophets has learned to live by. Dave Frey and Ben McDonald founded the band in college, having no idea that in just a short time they would have a successful record and a loaded touring schedule. A demo tape landed them in a campus talent contest, which somehow connected them to Audio Adrenaline's Will McGinniss, landing them an opening gig for Audio Adrenaline which formed the template for their life now spent on the road over 150 days of the year.
Sounds like a fun life, right? Sure, if you want to leave family and friends to live on the road for half of each year, sleeping in the janitor’s closet at some venues, and making due with beans and cornbread, while trying to practice, write and record in between shows. Exhausting? Yes. Worth it? To Sidewalk Prophets, they'd have it no other way!
Dave and Ben rounded out their band with a bassist and drummer (Cal Joslin and Justin Nace) they found on Craigslist. So you never know who will respond to your ad!

Happy birthday, America!
ARTIST OF THE DAY
Amy Douglas
Growing up in the small town of Red Oak, Texas Amy Douglas has always shared a passion for music and a love for the Lord. At the age of 17 Amy felt God calling her to ministry but was unsure of direction. She went to college and graduated with a Bachelors in music. Then Amy and her husband Jared created Get A Life Ministries in order to minister full time through music and speaking.
Get a Life ministries has taken the Douglas' all over the country visiting and effecting thousands upon thousands of individuals for the body of Christ. Amy Douglas recorded two self produced projects and in 2005 the Douglas family proudly welcomed daughter Jayden Faith to the fold. Since that time, Amy has been more focused on family life than life on the road.

Phillips, Craig & Dean
Randy Phillips, Shawn Craig, and Dan Dean make up this vocal group that has been leading worship around the world since 1991. All three are pastors at different churches in Texas and Missouri and prioritize being at home for church. As a group they have earned almost two dozen number 1 radio singles, 9 Dove Awards nominations and several wins - including the 2010 Dove Award for Inspirational Album of the Year, Fearless.
Phillips, Craig & Dean have performed at the conventions of the National Religious Broadcasters and Christian Booksellers Association, appeared at Moody Church, played at Promise Keepers rallies, and recorded music for the National Day of Prayer.
Recovery: Dan Dean has been battling prostate cancer. The worship leader and senior pastor of The Heartland Church in Carrollton, TX., was diagnosed early this spring, just prior to the the release of Phillips, Craig & Dean's most recent album, Breathe In. Since his initial diagnosis, he has made great progress in his journey on the long road toward recovery and remission.

A new month!
And America's birthday week!
Should be fun!
ARTIST OF THE DAY
Michael O'Brien
Michael O'Brien is a multi-Dove and Grammy Award nominee - winner - former member of NewSong - musical powerhouse! Michael O’Brien is probably most known from his 7 year tenure as lead singer of the Newsong - but his musical career now spans three decades!
Back in 2006 Michael stepped down from lead singer duties in NewSong to follow God's calling on his life. He had been living on the road for almost a decade. He felt that God was pulling him to invest more in his family and local church.
Michael and his wife now minister to other Christians who are battling through difficult times in their marriages. In the last several years, Michael and Heidi O'Brien have shared their story of restoration on National Television and radio broadcasts across America. Ministries that have partnered with Michael and Heidi are The Billy Graham Association, Family Life Today, The 700 Club, Life Today, the TBN and that's just to name a few.
