Less than a week after Thanksgiving and I have officially cleared out my refrigerator of leftovers. It was a weekend of feasting on turkey and the assortment of casseroles - but I did it. Mission accomplished! Now on to Christmas goodie devouring!

It's Black Friday!

I always felt that nickname was ominous - but it references (what else) the economy. Today is the day that many retailers will find out if they end the year in the red (in debt) or the black (positive gains).

Now, I could lecture about the pitfalls of hyper-consumerism, but I'm currently ordering Christmas gifts online, so that would be a bit hypocritical.

Enjoy the Christmas music! And ditch the credit cards.

I become a mushy pile of sentimentality during the Season of Christmas. I have enjoyed an endless variety of Christmas albums throughout the years - but my number one pick for what I consider traditional, wonderful Christmas music is Point of Grace and any one of their FOUR Christmas albums!

These gals love the Season as much as I do - and their Christmas records feature pretty much every Christmas song ever. The styles range from a stripped down country vibe all the way to a full orchestra and then circle back around to a big band! If variety is the spice of life - Point of Grace is about as much Christmas spice you can get.

It wasn't the first time that a beloved Christian artist went mainstream, but it deeply affected people at the time. You might remember the song Baby, Baby? Then - that was tantamount to sacrilege. Now, it's muzak in elevators.

She branched out to country music as well. The past decade, Amy Grant has been back to making Christian records. She and her husband Vince Gill and all over the place. Christian, Country, Pop - they have great Christmas records as well!

Happy Thanksgiving Eve! I, for one, plan on kick starting the festivities today!

Turkey Countdown: 1 DAYS

History of the Turkey (About):
Turkey was introduced to the early Pilgrim settlers by the Native American Wampanoag tribe after the Pilgrims arrived in 1620. The first year for the settlers was bleak, with many dying from the journey. The Indians assisted the settlers, introducing them to native foods such as corn and squash and showed them how to hunt and fish. The first Thanksgiving was celebrated in 1621 at the behest of Governor William Bradford, and the Native Americans were invited guests of honor. While the turkey may or may not have been at the first Thanksgiving feast, the plentiful New World fowl was readily available to the colonists.

By 1916, Thanksgiving was referred to in writings as Turkey Day due to the popularity of the bird at the traditional feast. The popularity of wild turkeys nearly wiped them out. The federal government stepped in with protection in 1991, and they are now found in 49 states. Turkey was most-associated with Thanksgiving and Christmas, making winter the prime season for turkey farmers.

The tryptophan in turkey is often blamed for post-feast drowsiness, however there is actually more tryptophan in cheese and chicken breast than in the Thanksgiving turkey! More than likely you are getting sleepy because you just ate too much.

Random Thanksgiving side-note: In 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt attempted to move the official Thanksgiving date to earlier in November in order encourage a longer Christmas shopping season as a Depression recovery strategy. His idea was shut down by Congress, and the official date was declared permanently as the fourth Thursday in November via Public Law #379.

SONICFLOOd, the band that paved the way for the modern praise and worship movement and touted as “The Fathers of Modern Worship Music” just celebrated 10 years of ministry. One of their greatest honors was to perform the first Christian concert ever in a secular venue in modern Turkey’s history. This was nothing short of a miracle in a Country that is 99.9% Muslim. They have also had the privilege of performing at the President of Thailand’s birthday party. Their international ministry is extensive as they have performed on every continent except Antarctica.

They have earned a Grammy nomination, Dove Awards, ASCAP awards, as well as many other accolades. They have been featured on the 700 Club, TBN, INSP, God TV, and Harvest TV. They have sold over 2 million records - no small accomplishment in the post-Napter era! The band has had a rotating line-up over the years. Originally SONICFLOOd was fronted by Jeff Deyo. Now Rick Heil leads the epic worship band.

History of Sweet Potato Casserole (About):
It's a perenial favorite - the gooey marshmallows covering the sweet, brown sugary sweet potato puree. The smell, even more than the taste, means that Thanksgiving is here!
Sweet potatoes are the root of a vine in the morning glory family and native to the New World tropics. Its history dates back to 750 B.C. in Peruvian records. Columbus brought the sweet potato to the New World from the island of Saint Thomas. During the Revolutionary War, General Cornwallis (Red Coat) had the cooks at the Colonial Inn in Hillsborough, NC fix his family's yam recipe. That is how the sweet casserole made its way into American cookbooks.
Again, this root is a fall harvested veggie, which is why it ends up on our tables come holiday time.

This GRAMMY and multi-Dove award nominated band is known for powerful songwriting. While the music is modern rock and anthemic - the lyrics show uncommon depth and discernment. With three full length albums and a new worship EP under their belt, the quartet from Baytown, TX shows no signs of slowing down.

“During the past year, God has caused a total shift in our thinking and the way we approach our ministry,” says Leeland keyboardist Jack Mooring. His brother, the band’s principal songwriter, lead singer and guitarist, Leeland Mooring begins to explain, “For awhile, we were just this band from Baytown, Texas, and all we saw was our little church where God had been doing awesome and incredible things. But He’s really been opening our vision to all the hurting people, especially the poor, around the world and making it clear we should help by being a part of spreading His kingdom.”

With passion and conviction Leeland has transformed its sound into a call to action; asking followers of Christ to be the hands and feet of God. The band’s quest for insight continued as they befriended renowned teenage abolitionist Zach Hunter, toured with activist-rockers Third Day, collaborated with social justice advocate Michael W. Smith, partnered with Christian relief organization Food for the Hungry, took outreach trips to Africa and Asia, and attended Hillsong Church’s 2008 Conference in Australia.

When Leeland’s not on the road, band members continue to lead worship at the Baytown, Texas church the Mooring’s parents began pastoring six years ago. The band also serves regularly in their community’s Gulf Coast emergency preparedness programs and at a local food pantry which feeds hundreds of people each week.

It's the week of Thanksgiving! The holiday season cannot be ignored any longer!

And I am not ashamed to admit that I began decorating the house for Christmas this past weekend. The tree isn't up yet - but I did put some lights and garland around the stair rail. I needed to confess that to somebody ...

Holiday Homemaker
Here are some tips for making your house comfortable for those Holiday guests:

1. Throw Pillows - Great for decorating and making deep-seated couches more comfortable, but don't overwhelm all of the seating spaces.

2. Dim Lighting - Everyone looks better in lower light. Plus it creates a sense of intimacy.

3. Furniture - Arrange furniture to face each other to encourage conversation - not towards the TV.

4. Side tables - provide a place for cups and plates, otherwise you'll be discovering trash for weeks after the party.

5. Extra blankets - Stock the guest room(s) with extra blankets so they don't have to worry about bothering you for them later.

6. Fresh flowers - Put little vases around the house with small, fresh flowers. It is refreshing and calming.

7. Luggage Space - Add a chair or bench to the guest room for luggage and/or a place to put shoes on.

History of Pumpkin Pie (About):
I'll preface this by saying I do not care for pumpkin pie. It's not that I hate it - I just prefer most other desserts over it.
Early settlers would have had a version of pumpkin pie that involved hollowing out a pumpkin and filling it with eggs, milk, honey and spices - and letting that curdle inside the pumpkin next to the hot ashes of a fire place. The whole crust thing wouldn't happen for decades (and thank the Lord it did - cause that is the only part of a pumpkin pie I like).
In fact, the crusted version of what we now consider pumpkin pie originated in France in 1651. It was devised by the famous chef, Francois Pierre la Varenne who called it the "Tourte of Pumpkin." It wasn't until 1796 that pumpkin pie first debuted in an American cook book. And since pumpkins ripen during the harvest season, it became a staple of harvest season spreads.

The average cost for a Thanksgiving meal (feeding 8-10) is just under $50. Some families cannot afford the cost of the holiday - and many churches are doing something about it! Check with your church to see if there is an outreach this holiday season that you and your family can participate in!

Tomorrow morning, Joelle (from the Joy In The Morning team) will be broadcasting from Living Hope Ministries in Crisfield, MD! They are giving away 100 Thanksgiving meals to families in need! So head down to the docks and hang out!

History of Cranberries (About):
The Pilgrims learned all about cranberries from the Native Americans, who recognized the natural preservative power (benzoic acid) in the berries. They used it to preserve meats over the long winter. They were a tart reprive from heavy food - but sugar was scarce, so the sauce we know and love (tolerate) today was not present at the first Thanksgiving. Cranberry sauce came into the picture via General Ulysses S. Grant who ordered it served to the troops during the seige of Petersburg in 1864. Cranberry sauce was first commercially canned in 1912 by the Cape Cod Cranberry Company.

Nordeman was raised in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where she played the piano in church. She got her start when she entered a Gospel Music Association (GMA) contest in Los Angeles, California and was noticed by a music producer. She's also written songs for the VeggieTales and performed I Will Believe for the soundtrack Music Inspired by the Chronicles of Narnia.

Nichole is married to Errol Ingram. The couple have two children, Charlie Thomas Ingram, born in July 2003, and Paige Bennett Ingram, born in November, 2008. Yes - her husband's name is Errol - like Errol Flynn!

This staple of American Thanksgiving tables was introduced by General Foods in 1972 - and then bought out by Kraft in 1990. The quick stuffing formula was developed from a home-made recipe that a research team of three Nobel prize winning scientists analyzed.
(Note: They did not win the Nobel for stove top stuffing - but I bet it looks good on their resume)
Kraft Foods says they sell about 60 million boxes every Thanksgiving.
A listener informed me that a bakery in Federalsburg actually bakes the bread used in Stove Top! What?! How was that not on the Shore Things list?!

History of the Cornucopia (wiki):
The cornucopia is a symbol of food and abundance dating back to the 5th century BC, also referred to as the horn of plenty. It's inception comes from a pagan practice in Greek mythology. In modern depictions, the cornucopia is typically a hollow, horn-shaped wicker basket filled with various kinds of festive fruit and vegetables.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Rich Mullins



Born and raised in Indiana, Rich Mullins was a farm boy with Quaker roots. He studied classical piano while playing for his church with his grandmother. As a child, Mullins was a part of a regionally touring group, The New Creations Choir. He later used his fame and money to found New Creations church and school for teens.

The profits from his tours and the sale of each album went to his church, which divided it up, paid Mullins the average salary in the U.S. for that year, and gave the rest to charity. He was considered a radical for bucking the mega-church trends of the 80s.

"..if I want to identify fully with Jesus Christ, who I claim to be my savior and Lord, the best way that I can do that is to identify with the poor."

Mullins was heavily influenced by St. Francis of Assisi. In 1997, he composed a musical called Canticle of the Plains, a retelling of the life of St. Francis set in the Old West. He also spent a lot of time evangelizing and living with Native Americans (particularly the Navajo). Mullins died in a car accident in 1997.

Famous Albums: Winds of Heaven, Stuff of Earth (1988), The World As Best As I Remember It, Volume One (1991) and A Liturgy, A Legacy, & A Ragamuffin Band (1993).

I hosted Throne of Grace this morning for the first time. There are many needs out there, but I was struck by how many of us go through the same things - and think we are all alone.

This is the reason that the Bible encourages followers of Christ to confess to one another. Not just our sin, but to share our lives together. This is how we come to know we are not alone.

Since the early 1980s Chris Eaton has been building a profile as one of Britain's classic songwriters. His songs have been recorded by megastars Amy Grant, Vince Gill, Sheena Easton, Rachel Lampa, Rebecca St. James, Jaci Velasquez, Janet Jackson, 4Him and Jessica Simpson - just to name a FEW! His working relationship with Amy Grant is most profound. Almost all of her projects have included at least one song written by Chris Eaton.

Besides writing many of the number one hits on Christian radio over the past two decades, Chris also records and performs his songs. Just a year ago he toured with Amy Grant, performing on his own and backing her up on many of their joint efforts. And even though Chris Eaton's music is well known in the US - many don't know he's the man behind the curtain. Diamond Rio



For longtime Diamond Rio fans wondering why their favorite country band decided to record a Christian record. This was no casual decision, but a cherished opportunity by a group of believers looking to share their faith and celebrate God’s grace and mercy.

“We’re all believers. We always have been,” adds lead vocalist Marty Roe. “I think a lot of our songs reflected that part of who we are, but this was different to actually able to say in a stronger voice what our hearts are about.”

Diamond Rio has released seven studio albums, two greatest hits collections and “A Diamond Rio Christmas: The Star Still Shines,” a 2007 holiday album that marked their debut with Word. The band has earned three platinum albums and won the Country Music Association’s Vocal Group of the Year award four times as well as netting two Academy of Country Music Awards in the top Vocal Group of the Year category.

The band admits there was a sense of freedom in sharing their faith so openly.

“There has always been a veil on our Christianity and the veil is off,” says Olander. “We’re revealing who we are. We’re not preaching. We’re not preachers, but we’re saying, ‘This is who I am and I’m proud of it.’ God is working and we’re here for a reason.”

Wayne Watson



Back in the early 90s, Wayne Watson teamed up with Steven Curtis Chapman and Michael W. Smith to wear the worst looking mullets in the world. Thankfully all three survived to continue making relevant Christian music in modern times - where men don't have pony tails.

Wayne Watson has a Grammy and multiple Dove Awards, chronicling an awesome career beginning with his debut release Workin' in the Final hour back in 1980! Some of his songs have become CCM classics, including Another Time, Another Place, For Such a Time as This, and Watercolor Ponies.

After taking some time to be the worship pastor at a church in Texas, Watson returned to Christian music in 2007 with his release Even This.

You've heard that expression, right? I've used it during good times and bad. It's all about perception. I don't think that the statement is generally accurate, although it sure seems that way some times.

Sometimes we feel abundantly blessed - other times cursed. But it takes real discernment to see that God never leaves us or forsakes us, even when life's consequences come piling in.

Britt Nicole



Britt Nicole grew up in the church, her grandfather's church, actually, along with his TV ministry, which aired weekly on the Charlotte, NC, station WAXN. It was there that Nicole made her first public appearances, singing gospel songs in a trio with her brother and cousin.

Britt passed up a music scholarship to Nashville's Belmont University to focus on her music career - landing a deal with Sparrow Records in 2006. Now, with two albums under her belt, radio and touring success - it looks like her plan is coming together.

What Britt has to say about being a recording artist:

It’s about stepping out and being who God has called you to be and not being afraid of that. I believe when we look different and carry something different, people are going to see that and want it too. They are going to see the love of Christ in us and they’ll desire that.

Everyone wants to drum up viewer loyalty before shows go on hiatus until the beginning of 2011. It's a time where shows bust out big named guest stars and throw in a mid-season cliff hanger to get you to return next year. They know that people are very busy during the holidays and choose not to compete. Plus they want to be with their families too!

Atmospheres is the worship ministry at C3 Church Asheville, NC. C3 is a one-year-old church in the not-so-urban heart of the North Carolina mountains who, despite tripling in size in merely twelve month’s time, still boasts only 300 members.

The group is fronted by Steve Deal, a native of Australia who served at a C3 church in Lawrenceville, GA before heading to Appalachia. Stephen von Heyking relocated from Calgary, Alberta, Canada to join Steve with the intent of building upon an already urgent and unconventional musical culture in the North Carolina Mountains.

Thanksgiving is rushing towards us (2 1/2 weeks), and I am thrilled to welcome back the Holiday season! Thanksgiving is all about family for me. And it will be my daughter's first Thanksgiving - which makes it extra special for my family. We have so much to be thankful for, even though we've just gone through a tremendous season of change in our lives.

Throughout my many Thanksgivings, it is the years where there was little - when times were the hardest - that I remember most fondly. That must be a God thing. Did you know that people give more generously during hard times than during times of plenty? I think when we are accountable to our blessings is when we are most thankful for them.

So how has God taken care of you this past year? Was it hard? In those hardships did you see God better? That's generally been my experience. One thing is for sure - this Thanksgiving, I am so thankful for my WOLC family. The staff and management - and especially the listening family! Thanks for welcoming me and my family. Thanks for becoming our new family!

I also get very sentimental during the last couple of months of the year ...

PFoR have been recording and touring since 1995, but just under the radar. Then Michael W. Smith caught wind of one of their songs (Let It Rain). He recorded it for his platinum-certified album Worship. Phillips, Craig & Dean took notice of another song (Let The Worshippers Arise) and recorded it for their worship record.

But Pocket Full Of Rocks is more than just a song factory! They released their debut Song To The King in 2006 to critical praise, followed by Manifesto in 2007 and this year's release More Than Noise!

Currently the band is enjoying some radio success and opening up for Todd Agnew all across the country for An Evening of Worship Tour.

Shaun Groves



Shaun’s own salvation story began at the age of six with a dash down the aisle during an altar call given by a fiery revival meeting preacher. Shaun’s decision that day was fueled by fear; he knew he needed to be saved from eternal separation from God. But that knowledge alone didn’t bring Shaun peace.

At age 12 Shaun found the peace he was missing when he learned that God actually loved him. Fueled with a strengthening relationship with Christ, Shaun developed a love for music that propelled the weakest member of the school band all the way to the first chair, and on to a full music scholarship at Baylor University.

The life plan Shaun created at Baylor made sense: marry his sweetheart Becky, become a church minister and write Christian songs on the side. But an internship with a Nashville music publisher led to a job, and that led to interest around town in his singing and songwriting. Shaun signed a recording contract at the end of 2000, just a week before the birth of the couple’s first child.

“One CD,” he thought, and then he’d get back to his original plan. But Shaun was surprised by success. His 2001 debut Invitation to Eavesdrop scored five songs on the charts and a half dozen Dove Award nominations, including New Artist and Song of the Year for Welcome Home. He was soon touring coast to coast and around the world with Bebo Norman, Jars of Clay and Michael W. Smith. “New plan,” he thought.

But after a few years of working the music scene, and rarely seeing his family, Shaun found himself doubting the trajectory of life. After becoming involved with Compassion International, Shaun found his special purpose. He and his family began working with families in El Salvador (through CI) and speaking at churches around the US, bringing light to the situation.

Gloomy weather can put me in a bad mood. Sometimes little things can get blown out of proportion just because that is where my head and heart are - ready to pounce! Thankfully we have Holy Spirit in our lives to bring calm, level-headedness.

But it isn't that hard to ignore God when we really want to feel self-pity. Thankfully the Bible teaching and great Christian music on Joy! 102.5 can refocus our hearts - even on gloomy days.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Marshall Hall



Marshall Hall is a gifted singer and songwriter, with several solo projects, but he's best known as one of the rotating members of the Gaither Vocal Band. This year he signed a new record deal with Daywind Records, to return to his first love, Southern Gospel music.

Marshall grew up in Lexington, KY - where his family’s life was centered around the church and their faith.

“My dad was a pastor before I came along, and if the church doors were open - the Halls were there,” he laughs.

He also found a spot as a back-up singer on projects for recording artists John Tesh, Clay Walker and Carman, among others. He has written songs for several Gaither videos, as well as for Salvador, Point of Grace, fellow Gaither Vocal Band member David Phelps and the Vocal Band.

Politicians love to use buzz words.
"Hope."
"Change."
They grab your attention and are used frequently (usually out of context). The truth is that politics will only ever do so much. If you want real hope and real change - that is a heart condition. It's something that only comes from a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

So while we can be responsible and vote and participate with our government, be sure you place your hope in Jesus. He's the only one who will not let you down.

#94. Return Day: Georgetown, DE

It's a custom that began in the 18th century - the day after the election, Georgetown, DE hosts a county wide festival while the returns are counted. 2010 Return Day is actually tomorrow. After the parade, Delaware's political leaders on the Main Stage on The Circle in front of the historic Sussex County Courthouse (circa 1837) will gather to hear the Town Crier deliver the returns from the Courthouse balcony.

Matt Redman



Matt Redman is married to Beth and they have five children; Maisey, Noah, Rocco, Jackson and Levi. Based in Atlanta they are part of Passion City Church with pastors Louie and Shelley Giglio.
This is the third church plant Matt has been involved with, having previously been on the team for Soul Survivor,Watford, and The Point in the UK.

On May 22nd of this year, Matt became an intergalactic worship leader, when the crew of the STS-132 and International Space Station chose his song Shine to be there wake-up music. That's right - Matt Redman's songs in SPACE!

His early compositions include The Heart of Worship, Better is One Day and Once Again. More recent songs have included ‘Blessed Be Your Name’ and ‘You Never Let Go’ – both written with wife Beth and encouraging us to worship God through the storms of life.

As Matt explains, “Blessed Be Your Name is a declaration of something which we’ve both found to true in the tough seasons of life – that to worship God and trust Him no matter what will always be the best path to take."

Matt is also the author of three books which all center around the theme of worship. The Unquenchable Worshipper unpacks what a healthy heart of worship might look like, and how that translates into the lives we lead.
Facedown explores how we can paint a big picture of God through our songs and actions.
The third book, Blessed Be Your Name, co-authored with Beth, is an encouragement to trust in the sovereignty and goodness of God, even when to do so seems costly.
Matt has also compiled two other books – The Heart of Worship Files and Inside-Out Worship - practical worship-leading advice from many experienced leaders around the globe.

This is a great time of the year to take stock of our many blessings. Even in the hardest years of my life, I can look back and see God's presence and providence. If this is one of those kind of years for you, my prayer is that even if you can't see Him now, you will one day look back and know God is holding you right now.

One of my favorite Irving Berlin songs says to "count your blessings, instead of sheep..." So tonight, talk to God and thank Him for everything that comes to mind! Even ask the Spirit to reveal to you all of the blessings in your life.

Virginia Hill



Virginia Hill is no stranger to the performing arts. Her mom (Judy Buffum) and sister (Tammy Trent) are both also recording artists. Competition breeds excellence - Iron sharpens iron - sibling rivalry - one or more of those probably motivates Virginia every day!

Virginia’s musical gifts blossomed quietly in the background, revealed only through her church choir and school musical productions during her younger years. She actively participates with her Church music ministry, but it wasn't until after her two sons became teenagers, did she take the time to record a demo record of her own music.

Virginia speaks as well as she sings and plays, and her encouraging message of hope seems to strike a chord with every audience. Now with two albums under her belt (LOL and Truth & Love) she's traveling, singing and speaking all over the country! Years of sitting quietly before Him, guitar in hand and an open Bible at her feet, all come to beautiful fruition now in her sensitive ministry to all ages. Virginia Hill is ready to serve, to be His instrument, for such a time as this.

Happy November!
It's All Saints Day, the start of a new month (which includes Thanksgiving), and today is the kick-off of a recent tradition called No-Shave November!

It's a time for manliness ... or at the very least, scruffiness. The goal of No-Shave November is not to save money on shaving cream, but rather create an army of masculinity! I have my suspicions it was started to freak out a lot of wives and mothers worried about Holiday season family pictures.

So I'm trying it out. We'll see how far I get. I'm betting maybe a week and a half before my wife holds me down and shaves off my weak mustache.

Bart Millard



Not only is this crooner the lead singer of MercyMe (arguably the most popular act in Christian music today) but he writes and produces for a variety of other artists, and has a couple solo projects under his belt.

Bart Millard's "Hymned" and "Hymned Again" records are a collection of his favorite church songs growing up, with a vintage, southern church style. It's a little bit honkey-tonk, and a lot worshipful. In 2008, Hymned Again earned Millard his first solo Grammy nomination for "Best Southern, Country, or Gospel Album"!

Hymned was a tribute to his grandmother, but the sequel was inspired by his three kids who really enjoyed worshiping to the first album. He saw it as an opportunity to introduce another generation to some amazing 19th century worship songs.
