The Joy Ride is on!
The weekend is here!
It's a beautiful Fall Day!
I love simple sentences ending with exclamation points!

Getting to Know the Eastern Shore!

#91. Church Harvest Fests and Halloween alternatives.

It's become pretty standard tradition in the US for churches to provide safe, family friendly events on Halloween weekend. The churches of Delmarva do it in style! Who knows more about harvests than the bread basket of the mid-Atlantic?!

If your church is offering some family fun this weekend, be sure to tell the world about it on OUR FACEBOOK page!

ARTIST OF THE DAY
David Crowder Band

DCB pushes the limits of Christian music. Just when you think they've hammered out a niche in the praise and worship genre, they release an EP of their songs remixed to techno (See Sunsets & Sushi)! I once saw them in concert, and they rigged a Guitar Hero guitar to a computer synthesizer and played an entire song using the toy guitar.

David and his wife purchased the home of Dr. Pepper in Waco, TX. They converted the barn (where the 23 flavors of Dr. Pepper were perfected) into a music studio and filled it with web cams. Anytime they are home working on new music, they stream it on their website!

This past summer they hosted a worship event in Texas for 10s of thousands of people. They are a founding member of the Passion worship team, tour the world, still lead worship for their home churches in Texas, and continue to surprise with every new album.

Here's a link to their newest music video: CLICK HERE

In 1999, Greg won the Dove Award for New Artist of the Year and his song "Mercy Said No" was nominated for Song Of The Year! Since his solo debut he's garnered radio hits, awards, and toured the world on his own and with Avalon. One of the highlights of his career is that he got to spend some time in India personally meeting Mother Teresa shortly before her death.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Ginny Owens

Ginny Owens is blind. But like Ray Charles, her handicap might just have been the fuel her soul needed to write some of todays most beautiful and eloquent Christian songs.

Born and raised in Jackson, Miss., Owens was discovering melodies on the piano almost before she could complete a sentence. Sunday school songs and common childhood tunes began to emerge from her fingers even as vision began to leave her eyes. By the age of three, a degenerative eye condition left Ginny completely blind.

Despite her physical challenge, music just made sense to her, quickly becoming a lifeline for both understanding and communication. Songs provided a window into a world Ginny couldn’t see, but they also offered an outlet for her to express her own thoughts, dreams and questions.
“My songs are my journal entries,” Owens said. “Sometimes they’re simply my observations of the world around me; sometimes they’re the conversations that I’m neither brave nor articulate enough to have with others.”

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Jared Bayless

Jared’s been singing/songwriting/playing since 2001. He didn’t play an instrument, write songs, or even sing in church until he was 19. One day he decided to sell his brand new Playstation 2, go down to the pawn shop, buy a used guitar, and proceed to teach himself off the internet how to play. That fall he attended Nebraska Christian College and met much better musicians than himself who were willing to take him under his wing and teach him how to get better as a musician and a God-fearing man.

While Jared Bayless is still relatively new to Christian radio, he has already had the opportunity to open up for national artists/bands Aaron Shust, Mark Schultz and Mikeschair.
“I aspire to reach those with a message that is powerful and speaks nothing but truth. With a lyrical deterioration in the musical society, I hope to provide thought-provoking lyrics which challenge your lifestyle, faith, image, and walk with God.” -Jared Bayless

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Julian Drive

Shane Bowers (vocals, guitar) and Shaun Bennett (keyboard, guitar) formed the nucleus of the band while leading youth worship at church in their small hometown in rural Clarke County, Georgia. With the help of a few fellow friends they elevated the level of intensity from just another youth group worship band to a full fledged, no-holds-barred, ministry-oriented, Southern alt-rock band.

While not yet a household name, Julian Drive has opened for Casting Crowns, Third Day, Newsong, Superchick, Big Daddy Weave, David Crowder, Rush of Fools, Big Daddy Weave, Building 429, and a host of others.
“Each guy in the band brings something incredibly creative to the table,” Shane recalled. “Through the years I’ve evolved into the music and lyric; poetic sort. Shaun’s really turned it on in recent years and has added a lot to the writing process, whether through music, progressions, ideas, or melodies. James is a creative guru in the arranging process while Josh is more of an idea guy. We’re all continually growing creatively.”

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Jaci Velasquez

Jaci Velasquez has been breaking down walls and stereotypes for Christian music since the beginning of her career (and she was only a teenager!). Velasquez, a Houston, Texas native, began traveling and singing with her family when she was 9 years old. At the age of 14, she signed to Myrrh Records. Her first album “Heavenly Place” shot up the charts and garnered Jaci her first Platinum record, earning her the title of “the fastest selling solo debut artist in the history of Christian music.”

The Latin music industry quickly took notice and Sony Discos signed her to a Latin record deal. Jaci began recording both English and Spanish albums simultaneously. “Love Out Loud” was released in 2008 as Jaci’s 13th record and debut release on her self-owned Apostrophe Records. A secretive new project is due out in 2011.

As if being a multi-lingual music super star weren't enough, Jaci has also done some acting in both Christian and foreign language films, modeling, and been a spokeswoman. Plus she and her husband have two children under the age of 5. Seriously, is there anything she can't do?!

Monday, October 18, 2010

Have you ever supported a Christian radio station before? I first began financially partnering with my local Christian station when I was 12 years old. I was growing up, and the music and DJ's that made me laugh were helping me to grow in Christ. I recognized that impact, and decided to give my allowance money to the cause.

Today, as a member of Joy! 102.5 I recognize the power and impact of Christian radio is even greater than how it impacted my life. I've talked with people who came to accept Christ because of the music on Christian radio. I've prayed with people as they go through life's ups and downs, and have experienced first hand the power of the right song at the right moment.

Please partner with us this Shareathon as we continue to reach our world for Jesus. If you've never before given - let me assure you that becoming a part of this team will bless you in ways you cannot imagine!

#85. Hebron Carnivals

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Kathleen Carnali

Kathleen Carnali is an international touring artist whose ministry spans the globe as she brings to the world a strong message of love, hope and new life in Christ. She has four albums to her credit, including her most recent release Be Still and Know. Her love for the Word, gift of evangelism and heart for Worship underline all of Carnali's songs.
"I believe that music can speak to people in ways that mere words cannot. Somehow, it can break through walls and barriers and reach down to touch the soul. What an awesome tool we have been given to share the Love and Good News of our Lord."

#84. Bonfire on Dewey Beach

There is something about being outside around a fire. It's almost magical. Some of my favorite worship experiences have been around an open flame, with either a guitar or just the sound of voices singing to Jesus. As the temperatures drop, the appeal is even greater! You must get a permit to have an open fire on Dewey Beach, but according to a listener, that is not a difficult task.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Newsboys

Part of the Holy Trinity of 90s Christian music (DC Talk, Audio Adrenaline, and The Newsboys) - The Newsboys have been touring the globe for nearly 25 years! The band originated in Australia, but the current line-up features a couple of Americans.

Two years ago long-time frontman Peter Furler announced he was burnt out on the touring life and wanted to spend time with his family, and producing from his home in Nashville. There were tryouts - rumors - and then blowing the mind of everyone who listened to Christian music in the 90s, former DCTalk vocalist Michael Tait became the new lead singer of The Newsboys. This is what is called a SUPER GROUP!

Interesting Facts: The Newsboys were formed in 1985 as "The News" in Queensland, Austrailia. There are no original members performing in the band's current line-up.
Latest Album: Christmas! A Newsboys Holiday
Tour: The Very Merry Christmas Tour with Newsong!
The closest they get to us is Frederick, MD on November 29th.

One of the original voices in Selah (her brother is Todd Smith, also in Selah), Nicole left the group to pursue her family and solo career in 2000.

In 2008, Nicole and her husband Greg faced a life changing loss, when their 10 week old son Luke passed away. It was and is their faith in Christ that gets them through this tragedy, and gives depth to their ministry to families around the world.

Her latest single is All Things New:
All things new. No more pain, no more death. The chorus is a reference to Revelation 21, which talks about the Lord returning to rule on the earth. - Nicci

Wednesday, October 13, 2010

Are you ready for a bold future? Growing up, I remember dreaming of the future. It featured flying cars, hoverboards, and lightsabers - none of which are a reality (yet). The older I get, the less obsessed I am with the future. The more I live in the "now."

But I don't want to lose sight of hoping for a greater future. Part of the work we do here at Joy! 102.5 is to ensure an encouraging and Christ-centered future for the next generation. Sometimes that is through a new song or artist - sometimes new programming and team members.

It isn't change for change's sake - it's an attempt to ensure a future filled with love, peace, hope and Joy! Shareathon is next week. Remember that when you give to this ministry, it isn't just about what Joy! has been to you in the past or how it helps you each day in the present. It is also about encouraging the next generations of Christ followers.

#82. Chesapeake Bay Retrievers

How many regions in America have their own breed of dog?! The Chesapeake Bay Retriever was developed in the early 1800s and officially approved by the AKC in 1884. The dogs were bred for hunting along the bay. By the 1860s, businesses used CBR's to supply water fowl to area markets in Baltimore and DC.

The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is a versatile breed that competes in field trials, hunt tests, obedience, agility, and tracking - but with the heart and loyalty of a great hunting dog. Want to learn more about these adorable, yet powerful dogs? CLICK HERE.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Laura Kaczor

This Pennsylvania native has been studying voice, piano, and guitar since she was 14. She wrote or co-wrote 9 our of 10 songs on her third label release Love Enough. Laura is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, and has been a worship leader for Penn’s Chapter of Campus Crusade for Christ, a lead vocalist for Full Measure, and a member of Penn’s Christian a Capella group.

Laura is also the founder of “Lift Up U”niversity Girl’s/Women’s Conferences where she is both a speaker and worship leader joining with Girlz of Faith. She addresses issues such as self-esteem, purity, God’s definition of beauty, healing and freedom from emotional bondage.
“Music is such a huge part of our world, and it is one of the most effective mediums for communicating a message. I’ve always felt that songs that speak to the human condition, and offer hope, purpose, and beauty, should not be limited to the church. I want my music to communicate God’s love to a broken world… and an amazingly diverse world it is! It’s awesome to see how music can bridge generational and cultural barriers, and touch the heart of a person. That is what excites me the most, and keeps me singing every day.” – Laura

Tuesday, October 12, 2010

Have you ever noticed how different style of music impact your mood? This morning I put on one of my favorite Christian emo-core bands (Blindside) to pump me up on my short commute (Joy In The Morning was already off). I was fired up - ready to attack the day!

Then, as I prepared for this afternoon's Joy Ride, I listened to the new album from Brooke Fraser (a Hillsong United veteran) called "Flags." It is a softer, introspective, worshipful album. It made me feel like it was 50 degrees outside and I had a cup of hot chocolate in my hands as I sat by a roaring fire.

I love taking a daily musical journey through emotion and mindset. My encouragement to you is to not limit yourself to one musical style. Experience the beauty of variety. God has blessed artists in every musical arena - and they create passion in spades.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Fike & Dana

Richie (Fike to his friends) and Dana Fike fell in love at first sight. After a short courtship the musical duo tied the knot (back in 1999). They immediately began writing music together with their band FaceDown. They spent a few years touring with other groups, including Shane & Shane, The Robbie Seay Band and many others in the burgeoning worship fueled Christian music industry.

During those years of touring, Fike felt called to pursue a life of local church ministry. God impressed upon his heart the value of the local church and the impact he could have on a family of believers through songwriting, leading worship and developing relationships. In 2002, the Fikes moved to Colorado Springs to join the ministry of Vanguard Church. It was there that they were inspired to write worship songs for their church.

Since settling down, the couple has recorded a couple of independent worship albums, and seen some radio success, as well as Gospel Music Association attention at their annual Rocky Mountain radio conference. The success has the couple touring and playing conferences again.
Fun Fact:
Fike's long time musical love is Hip Hop
Dana loves Country music
So she's a little bit country and he's a little bit thug life.

#80. Furnace Town

The Nassawango Iron Furnace was started in 1829 near Snow Hill, MD. The Village of Nassawango Hills developed in support of smelting iron. After it was abandoned in the 1850s the town crumbled until all that was left was the mighty brick furnace. Today, Furnace Town Living Heritage Museum offers a view of the village as it was then.

Restoration work of the historic site began with the Worcester County Historical Society in the 1960s. Now the museum offers programs in archaeology, history, nature, and artisan interpretations to educate the public.

December 4-5 they will host a 19th Century Christmas celebration!

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Salvador

Born out of Texas, with a blend of American and Mexican flavor - Salvador continues to bring guitar driven, Spirit led music to the table.

The eleven songs on their sixth studio album, Aware, amply demonstrate the virtue of the American work ethic in producing fresh expressions of worship that are at once culturally relevant, original, and actually sound effortless, seamless, spontaneous.

A lot was going on during the recording of Aware:
“I have always depended on working hard and being diligent when it was time to get to work,” Nic explains. “My Dad was a ‘roll up your sleeves’ kind of guy. That is the heritage I come from. That was the approach I took for our first five records. But for Aware, I think God really stepped into my life in a different way. This time I leaned so much more on Christ. I had a new wife and we were getting ready to have a new baby. I didn’t have 20 hours a day to just be alone and write.”

Salvador proudly wears the label "jam band," guaranteeing that whenever you see them live - it will be different and special.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Gungor
(formerly The Michael Gungor Band)

Michael Gungor is an award winning song writer - having co-written "Friend of God" and Dove Award winner "Say So." But his experience in the Christian music industry left him feeling like a "professional Christian." His band was becoming disillusioned and yearned to follow God more honestly and passionately.

Michael Gungor has been leading worship since he was 12 years old, if you count an audience of 2- and 3-year olds. From there he graduated to children’s church, then youth group, then adults. Gungor studied jazz in college, then connected with teen ministry Acquire the Fire and a position at Resurrection Life Church in Michigan.

As Gungor’s idea of God and social responsibility evolved, so did his idea of church, so he and his wife moved to Denver and eventually founded a community of believers called Bloom. The new album Beautiful Things is centered on experiencing God through acts of social service and love.

“Musically, it’s kind of odd,” says Michael. “We rock pretty hard, then we pull out the banjo and sit around and cry together.” Indeed, the album closes with an extended instrumental session recorded live at a house in the Rockies, punctuated by a deeply emotional response to God’s presence.

Beautiful Things is pretty amazing.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Calling Levi

Calling Levi is a group of four gifted vocalists who have traveled throughout the country and all across the world. This full-time, traveling, vocal ministry is a family group of two sisters and their husbands. Last year alone the group traveled over 200 days lifting up the name of Christ and pointing others to Him. Those who know the ministry of Calling Levi know that their sole desire is to magnify Christ through heartfelt music and testimony. Although they place special importance on excellence in their program, their hearts are sincere and their worship genuine.

Levi (Matthew) was a tax collector that left everything behind to follow Jesus. The name, Calling Levi, was born out of the concept that Americans are living in the world’s wealthiest nation. We have so much! We are the Levi’s of our world. How are we responding to Christ’s call? Are we fully committing our lives and our possessions to His purpose?

This morning we web-casted from Common Grounds coffee shop in Salisbury. I'm still feeling the buzz from my quadruple-shot espresso. Good stuff! Thanks to all of the Christian owned and operated businesses on the Shore that partner with WOLC - together we're making a difference!

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Delirious

It's all over for Delirious. The UK based worship group has retired. Their live Farewell Show album is available as a CD/DVD/Blu Ray combo. Here's what Michael W. Smith has to say about the late-great Delirious:
“What an amazing band – and great friends of mine who I have had the privilege to minister with over the years. Delirious? broke the mold and made history...as they wrote and performed songs that truly inspired the church...” – Michael W. Smith

And while they band moves on, the music continues. Their label just released The Ultimate Delirious Songbook - a CD-ROM containing printable sheet music, chord charts and word masters for fifty Delirious songs.
“All the 17 years that the band was together, we never existed just to get in the charts or sell sell sell,” says Martin Smith. “Our best motives and highest calling was to try to be a voice that made others think, that called out praise and tried to chase down the smile of God.”

Get 'em while you can! http://www.delirious.co.uk/html/

#75. Sharptown (MD) Firemen's Carnival

We missed it this year (it was back in August) but I've been told that they have superior oyster fritters at this particular local carnival. Established in 1926, this annual fund raiser and family blessing has been kicking for 84 years! And, unlike the amusement parks on the boardwalk - there is no charge for admission! Plus, showing great progress for the Eastern Shore - they have a website: http://www.sharptown.net/carnival-default.asp

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Travis Taylor

Travis leads worship for his church in one of the ritziest neighborhoods in Hollywood. He attributes the authentic love for Christ and desire to perform the best by his church's members as the reason he tries to break molds with music - to create art as a form of worship. He encourages everyone, in whatever it is they do not put themselves in a box, and live boldly for Christ.

Taylor's debut "You Have Loved" blends rock, pop, and folk to deliver a worshipful experience with musical depth.

“I am a worship leader at heart, so I write songs for the worship arena,” Travis says. “But I also write songs about my wife; songs about my kids; songs that are just about everyday life. Of course there is an element of faith that runs throughout these songs, even when I’m not singing specifically about God. I think good music is good music and I don’t think people will be confused by hearing a love song next to a worship song on an album, as long as both are great songs.”

#74. A day in downtown Berlin, MD

I honestly have loss count how many times someone has told me that scenes for Julia Robert's Runaway Bride were filmed in Berlin, MD. That's awesome and all, but this town has more going for it than a 15 year old movie about committment issues. I'm just saying. Last weekend my family strolled around the Fidler's Convention - who knows what goodness Berlin will host this weekend! There's an endless supply of festivals, music, and fun. So go check it out - but don't expect to see Richard Gere hanging around.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Big Daddy Weave

Mike Weaver was a big dude. Hence the name of the band. But several years of weight loss won't change the name of the band to Medium Daddy Weave anytime soon. The band met while in college at the University of Mobile. If they haven't been in the studio recording, they've been on the road touring - usually with Mark Schultz and Josh Wilson.

When asked to describe their fifth album, What Life Would Be Like, guitarist/singer/songwriter Mike Weaver characterized it as being “all about expectations.”

“We all grew up in church,” Mike explains. “That is awesome, and I’m thankful for it, but there is also some baggage that comes with that. We grew up hearing people talk about grace, but there seemed to be an unspoken law that said, ‘but you also have to do this, this, this, this, and this.’ ... With What Life Would Be Like we are ripping up our old expectations to get to a place where we can receive the heart of God.”
